woofcat··on Apple wins antitrust court battle with Epic Games, appeals court rules
I don't believe this. There are plenty of huge apps that are only on one platform or another. As an example third party Reddit apps largely are single platform.

Because there is the other half of the market?
woofcat··on Mullvad VPN was subject to a search warrant – customer data not compromised
This is a confusing take to me. So my ISP which has my billing information is trying to find out who I am by calling Google? They know who I am.

The inverse is what you're trying to prevent. Service ABC has malicious activity and calls Google to ask which accounts are accessing from that IP address. However this has two main problems.

a) Why would Google give this info over willingly.

b) Most VPN's assign the same outbound IP address to multiple users. So it's not a 1-1 mapping.

c) People who are using a VPN for something malicious are not also signed into Google.. I'd think.

woofcat··on Reddit is currently down
Reddit's majority share holder is a massive publishing conglomerate. Why would they IPO...

woofcat··on The FBI Just Admitted It Bought US Location Data
If it's publically for sale is it really circumventing due process?

Do the police need a search warrant to lookup who owns a property, or leverage the white pages?

woofcat··on Ask HN: Laid off folks, are you getting hired?
I know many companies that do select whole teams, but it's also cleaning house time and the lowest performer from a previously non-impacted team will be included as laying off is easier than firing depending on where in the world you are.
woofcat··on Stripe increases price for business in the European Economic Area
I'll be the naysayer here. I very much disagree with this. A Visa is a Visa is a Visa. If you don't like it then don't take visa.

Charging me as the end user more money because I have a "Premium" card would be a very fast way for me to not shop with you.

woofcat··on Is AM radio dead?
I subscribe and enjoy it. It's great to catch Formula 1 when I'm out and about doing errands, and for 99% of my use case the music side of it is just fine. Commuting to and from work I don't need much more than "random playlist of genre x"

It works out to be $120/year, and that's with Howard Stern, and all the sports etc.

Could I do all this streaming with my phone? Most likely, however with this I don't worry when I drive down into the States that I'm now "Roaming" or really worry about data usage at all. Also I don't have to think about it.

woofcat··on Ask HN: Who's quit Amazon Prime or other formerly “must-have” services?
Cancelled Auto-renew on my prime membership and moved my photo/video backup to blackblaze.

Shipping is still free over a minimum spend and when you're buying diapers and wipes. You'll hit it.

woofcat··on ChatGPT is coming soon to the Azure OpenAI Service
I think this is really exciting, I'm presuming a shared model and thus the price is reasonable.
woofcat··on I listened to radio stations for working
I personally find radio stations far less random than any playlist. When I used to work on a factory floor they play the same songs at the same time each day.
woofcat··on Twilio’s toll fraud problem
They own the premium number that the victim is texting... and thus earning the charged money.

Nitter.ca is also down. I wonder if Twitter is bent out of shape.

woofcat··on The Commander X16 has finally arrived [video]
I'm confused on how his position on open carry or whatever has anything to do with a hobbyist computer. Care to elaborate?

Isn't there already laws against established companies using their market position to price under cost to cut out competition?
woofcat··on Shopify to lay off 10% of workers in broad shake-up
On a large chunk of Enterprise Software you'd have teams of people working on specific features / subsets of a larger product.

I.e. a team that is working on only Facebook Messenger back-end, a team working on Facebook Messenger Front-end, a team working on Friend Recommendation, etc.

Each of these teams is let's say 10 Dev, 2-4 QA, 1 Product Documentation, then all the normal overhead of HR, etc.

woofcat··on Runway melts at London Luton airport as temperatures in UK near 40°C
Wow if you block cookies on this site it 100% blocks you and kicks you out.
woofcat··on Ask HN: I miss Usenet. Are there any modern equivalents?
I think a lot of people feel the same way however you need a critical mass of users. I'm just presuming I'm younger than you however I miss the old days of discussion forums, you'd have some for web comics, anime, TV shows all with their set of screen names that you learned and inside jokes that lived on. Along with this is my love of IRC (which I'm still idling in)

Now with the internet feeling like it's just Reddit, Facebook, Google, Discord, LinkedIn, and Pintrest a lot of the fun inside jokes have gone to die, and the groups are so large that no-one even looks at a username.

woofcat··on Ask HN: Does anyone have a SMTP service for not sending bulk email?
The problem I've had with this before is that the service is sending an email to say 5 different users when an update happens in a container.

With outlook.com and Gmail I've had it get rate limited real fast. I.e. connecting to SMTP and firing out 15 emails seems to flag it pretty quick. The WebUI will continue to work but they'll lock down SMTP.

woofcat··on Women energy and climate professionals are the target of mansplaining on Twitter
I think the tone is the major issue with "mansplaining" however to be honest I'm unsure how tone works over text based communications.

Saying "okay" to a dinner idea might be construed as not being a fan of said idea, or "yes we can have that for dinner"

woofcat··on Women energy and climate professionals are the target of mansplaining on Twitter
Isn't this just a feature of social media? I see these types of responses all day long on Reddit and few people have their gender listed on their profile.

I think people just love being contrarian or insufferable know it all's.

Ohh no is this comment mansplaining?

woofcat··on Our Failed Attempt at Saving $100k of Crypto from Hackers
Looking up the one host it's at Hetzner. With $100,000 on the line I would have spent the $60 to run a dedicated server in that datacenter.
woofcat··on Videolan.org robots.txt

You can opt out of that, also it's published content and caching has a carved out exception. When you use this service at a school the teacher submits your paper to the service and they store it to validate against other students papers as well.

They don't only check against "published" sources.

woofcat··on Videolan.org robots.txt
So by that logic I can pirate all content, and as long as I don't claim it's mine it's not violating copyright laws?

U.S. copyright law provides copyright owners with the following exclusive rights:

- Reproduce the work in copies or phonorecords.

- Prepare derivative works based upon the work.

- Distribute copies or phonorecords of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership or by rental, lease, or lending.

- Perform the work publicly if it is a literary, musical, dramatic, or choreographic work; a pantomime; or a motion picture or other audiovisual work.

- Display the work publicly if it is a literary, musical, dramatic, or choreographic work; a pantomime; or a pictorial, graphic, or sculptural work.

-Perform the work publicly by means of a digital audio transmission if the work is a sound recording.

Copyright also provides the owner of copyright the right to authorize others to exercise these exclusive rights, subject to certain statutory limitations.

Often you don't really have a choice, if you're enrolled in a school. Tough luck you get to give up your rights.

Why does Turnitin get to keep a copy of all of my work for free? Do I not own the copyright of my papers?
