woodsier··on Claude Sonnet 4.6
Q: "I want to wash my car. The car wash is 50 meters away. Should I walk or drive?"

A: "Walk! It's only 50 meters — that's about a 30-second stroll. Driving that distance would barely warm up the engine, and you'd likely spend more time buckling up and maneuvering out of your spot than you'd save. Plus, walking is easier on the environment and gets you a few steps in."

Sonnet 4.6, no extended thinking.

woodsier··on KeePassXC 2.2.0 released with YubiKey and TOTP support
Decent mobile support is the only thing holding me back from switching. The current 3rd party options are underwhelming.
woodsier··on Getting Rid of Comments on Vice.com
It does sound like the best option available.

Is anyone out there aware of a solution that currently exists (and is available to people like you and I?).

woodsier··on Thank You HN: From 30 people whose lives you saved
You guys are absolute heroes. The concept behind this site is amazing. Well done.
woodsier··on There is something magical about Firefox OS
I think out of everyone you've really hit the nail here. It's about starting a movement, and taking the platform in a direction it's been needing to go to for a long time. The collaborative nature of open source should grow around this project as soon as the product arrives, and I really hope it does.
woodsier··on Today is Goof Off at Work Day
This was incredibly insightful. How long ago do you think it all changed? Do you think it's a function of the size that Google has grown to?
woodsier··on New Heroku Status Site
+1 - much appreciated.

Cool. I'll throw mine up and see how it goes.

woodsier··on URL shortener Tr.im gets cut off
The blog stated something along the lines that they couldn't sell it, because there was no apparent way to monetize it.
woodsier··on My Inbox Is Not A TV
It's also solved the images thing too, letting us choose what we see outside of simple text.

These people think subscribing to a service makes things easier on us, when in the end it's just making things more complicated, and honestly it's likely wasting more time too. And that's assuming middle-man service doesn't go belly up sometime in the future and force us to manually resubscribe to everything all over again.

woodsier··on Ask HN: Income on the Side?
Thanks for that. In future I'll check profiles.
woodsier··on Ask HN: Income on the Side?
So you're saying a decent article on your own blog posted twice a week is enough to pay utilities and rent + some insurance? That's pretty impressive, to me at least.

How do you monetise your blog? Just through ads? What kind of ads?

I've been thinking about doing something interesting to this, so it interests me. Would you mind linking to your blog?

woodsier··on Kevin Mitnick & Dan Kaminsky rm -rf
I sincerely hope that's the last time I hear "lolz" on HN, too.
woodsier··on Ask HN: are big compnay IT restrictions really necessary?
In large companies they are necessary to maintain some form of control, just so you don't have your IT department running around fixing computers all day, but not to this extent. What you're dealing with are technically-challenged control freaks.
woodsier··on Ask HN: Had an original idea for a start-up...but
I'm similar to you. Australian (Sydney), 21, Uni student, tight budget. E-books are great, but as others have said, just start fiddling.

I won't tell you what to do, because I'm still quite inexperienced and other advice in this thread will likely be far more valuable, but what I've done is purchased a cheap slice @ slicehost.com. I taught myself to work with Unix, setup apache/nginx, php, mysql, perl, python, ruby and so forth, fiddle with the internal settings. Then you start learning how these things interact with each other.

I then suggest installing something like Kohana, which is a fantastic PHP framework. By working inside a framework you are forced into good habits.

PHP, HTML and CSS should come first, in my opinion. Once you have the basics of these there, start implementing some fun Jquery and making a small site that's database-driven. All of a sudden you're using 5+ technologies, and from hereon out you'll learn things as you go.

woodsier··on Humans time blinks so they don't miss information
It always amazes me how _we_ control our body for the most part, and yet so much of it remains a mystery.
woodsier··on Why 2024 Will Be Like 1984: Amazon And The Kindle
While I see the point you are trying to make I disagree. You can't possibly think that music and video as mediums have not played their part in fighting for or against certain causes.

woodsier··on Alex Payne — Fever and the Future of Feed Readers
Nearly 2 years ago I started using Google Reader. I signed up for a few great feeds and read it every morning and every night. Over the following months I signed up to more and more feeds, eventually to the point where my reader was flooded with up to a thousand articles per day, and I struggled to find time to do my work between keeping up with this influx of information.

Then one particular week where things got too heavy, I just didn't have time.

Now, I wouldn't say I have OCD, but I really dislike doing things out of order. I can't watch a trilogy out of order, I can't watch a new TV series unless I start at S01E01. When I returned to my reader I suddenly had 6000+ articles to read, and dreaded the thought that I'd have to read some out of order.

I don't know if I'm alone here, but eventually I no longer enjoyed the prospect of opening Google Reader. To keep up with all this information, I felt I had to, but it ceased to be fun. It's probably been a month since I've opened it, just casually reading reddit and HN, as well as a few forums I have in my Firefox Toolbar and a few emails a day I've subscribed to.

One day I will likely go back on Google Reader and somehow cull the hundreds of subscriptions, all neatly categorised into topics and subtopics, back down a number I can read in an hour per day. But I suspect I'll find that difficult, and so instead I just stay away.

And that's my story about RSS.

woodsier··on 8 hours of Windows 7 Amazon sales outstripped Vista's entire pre-order period.
Likewise. I dualbooted my laptop during the BETA, but as soon as RC came out and I knew it would be a stable and was supported by updates (as opposed to needing to reinstall a new release every few weeks) I moved entirely to 7. Since then I've done the same to other PCs in my house as well as my girlfriends notebook which ran Vista like a sloth but now excels under 7.

Couldn't be happier.

woodsier··on In Our Inbox: Hundreds Of Confidential Twitter Documents
I wish I could downmod submissions. Fuck TechCrunch. It's tabloid crap.
woodsier··on No thanks Google, we've got Ubuntu
What I find more troubling is this notion that variety (or fragmentation as they call it) is bad.

They very clearly state it is an OS geared for low-resource netbook style computers, where browsers are up and running within seconds of pressing the on button. We don't have one of these yet, afaik.

Why not work with Ubuntu? It's geared to be the Windows of Linux, an all-round competitor and jack of all trades. In my mind, this would be stupid. That's like the original Ubuntu developers getting grief because they weren't building on some other distro, which may have been built with a different use in mind.

I like using Unix for my server, Win7 for my home laptop, and hopefully giving a stable version of Chrome OS a swing down the line on my girlfriend's netbook. If anything, it sounds like they want to build "down" from ditro's such as Ubuntu, not up. I'd rather not use a baseball bat in a game of tennis. Variety is a good thing.

woodsier··on Mint.com transforms personal finance from an onerous task into a fun diversion
I really wish this was available in Australia. All the alternatives are too messy and clunky, or don't hook into my bank easily.
woodsier··on Ask HN: Please, review wordoid.com, a smart naming webapp
It didnt work for me at all. Initially didnt write anything in the box, pressed go, nada. Refreshed, punched in test in the box, pressed go. Nothing.
