woodpanel··on Nearly 200 people under observation after Irkutsk lab worker dies from plague
As the pro-COVID-measures-crowd largely overlaps with the Putler-crowd it’s going to be interesting to see their agenda re-alignment.

When the wuhan Lab leak happened in 2019 most of my direct and indirect mainland china contacts were more or less 100% sure that this was intentionally leaked by the regime, and even if it wasn’t, that the regime is going to milk it internally (vs dissent) and externally (vs the west). Especially given that this happened just a few months after the Hong Kong protest crackdowns.

The western center-left didn’t want to acknowledge any of this until it became politically feasible for their own gain and this alone cost us roughly the first three months of properly responding.

Let’s see if and how they’ll going to put their political shenanigans before their countrymen this time. I fear, with all the division they sewed it is almost certainly going lure them to double down on “Covidiots”.

woodpanel··on MCP was always a bad idea?
> guessing games

that still doesn't answer why to choose MCPs over Skills.

woodpanel··on MCP was always a bad idea?
I happen to be much more token efficient by

- installing a cli tool

- exposing it via a simple SKILL.md

- turn repetitive patterns into bash scripts fast

woodpanel··on MCP was always a bad idea?
I noticed the security aspect to be one of the main selling points in corporations for going MCP (and one aspect that is underrepresented here).

However, maybe I'm missing something but how is defining access rights in an application layer the agent has access to more secure than defining the access rights at the target application itself?

Sure, hiding the filesystem via encapsulation tricks is one way to go. But what is the real-world usage-style of this vs. all MCP usages? I'd wager 1-10% are spending this extra effort, while 90% of users basically run shims so that they can expose APIs to their LLMs, for which they have no/bad access rights management.

woodpanel··on CSS-Tricks in Limbo
Immediate Tab-Closing when the author can't finish even half of an CSS article without ranting about evil conservatives ("far-right racist infamy").
woodpanel··on True Rate of Unemployment
Agree. Add to that that usually those ideological metrics have some telling blindspots.

In the case of their white paper, while being very thorough in defining which workers should be deducted from the workforce bucket, they have no adjustment towards when someone should be eligible for this triage in the first place.

Students for example.

Who studies out of virtue, and who just because the job market is still closed off to him?

Specifically urban governments used this statistical trick to downplay youth-unemployment for decades while also benefiting themselves with providing employment for their political base. Funnily though, these social-worker-slash-educator jobs are often themselves not viable enough to make it into the „true“ workforce bucket

That. You can't reach these people with reason, the whole debate, the wholse society and entire law has to abide to their feelings.

woodpanel··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
yeah those "unbusted" ones, like the Hammerbande, that have been caught, caught on camera trying to murder civillians they deemed being Hitler, and thus rightfully jailed.
woodpanel··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
there's no framing. just the law. if you are not handing over terrorist's data you are abating them. what that data is (encrypted or not), is an entirely different thing.

oh, and if you believe apple doesn't cooperate with the us govt., good luck!

woodpanel··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
Why are you leaving out the important details:

You can't as an ISP prevent malicious actors from using your service, but you do can assist the government - in the case of the recent attacks on Berlins electricity that caused a fatality the German - to hand over the data to help assist law enforcement.

If US state-department's claims [1] are true, did noblogs.org do so – help German authorities track Terrorists or did it cover for them?

Because their statement does say nothing about the claims made by the state department.

woodpanel··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
This is literally the thing you will find when busting groups that have been performing multiple attacks on German electricity and rail infrastructure in the last years. Attacks that results in dead people and are ok with many more dead
woodpanel··on US Government designates host of noblogs.org a "global terrorist"
Judging from noblog's opening statement of "connecting radical people" together with a welcoming bomb, I'd suspect they are very welcoming to open, peaceful discussions, particulary with those holding opposing views.

> "When fascism returns, it will not say, 'I am fascism.' No, it will say, 'I am anti-fascism.'" – Ignazio Silone

woodpanel··on US Government designates host of noblogs.org a "global terrorist"
According to that, they provided services to the guys that cut off parts of Berlin from the power grid, that caused 1 fatality.

IANAL but the common understanding of the situation would be: You can't as an ISP prevent malicious actors from using your service, but you do can assist the government - in this case the German - to hand over the data to help assist law enforcement. If state-department's claims are true, did noblogs.org do so?

woodpanel··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications

Sorry but does that word ring any bells? Is there any nation where natives have to "renew" their native-ness acceptance from the state on a n-yearly basis? This is intellectually dishonest imo.

woodpanel··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
You have the heads up: Why acquire real-estate if your status is by law temporary?
woodpanel··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Non-US citizen here. 100% Agreed.

Where does this notion come from that a host society has any obligation to the foreigner / non pr? As if he was forced to move to America.

woodpanel··on Watching TikTok and Instagram deactivates the cognitive control network: Study
Worthwhile to note that “TikTok” here just means the format, not the platform. YouTube has its “shorts”, Facebook, insta, X, et all engage heavily in milking your doom scrolled eyeballs for time and profit.

woodpanel··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
Let’s be real. John Oliver‘s sketch writer under neath that costume is probably not really enjoying the scenario of actually running as an opposition candidate against Farage in a nationwide MP race. He could probably win, but really who’s the joke on then?

Realistically he was hoping to put Farage to shame, for which he didn’t even have to win. But this result wasn’t that. A bit of nice PR but essentially a debacle for the other nationwide parties, because that was all they could come up with.

Prediction: Farage has good chances of becoming the/a future pm

woodpanel··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
I understand that seaside towns are basically open space retiree homes - it’s the same in Germany.

But let me get this straight: because Farage won absolute majority it is the end of the far right in the UK?

Have you got any mechanism in place to remind yourself about that grand prediction about Farage getting arrested in „a couple of weeks“? Maybe a predictionmarket link or something.

woodpanel··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
if a quarter of votes is what Count Binface got as a candidate backed by every other party against Nigel Farage this is not the "success" people hope it looks like. On the contrary Farage got his highest percentage ever.
woodpanel··on Ordinary Abundance
appreciate the downvote for proving my point
woodpanel··on Ordinary Abundance
nice little piece of web-literature.

Reminds me of a funny scene in Netflix's mini-series Dracula between him and Kathleen:

> D: You’re clearly very wealthy.

> K: Wealthy?

> D: Yes. Well, look at all this stuff. All this food. The moving picture box. And that thing outside, Bob calls it um, a car. And this treasure trove is your house!

> K: It’s a dump.

> D: Kathleen, I’ve been a nobleman for 400 years. I’ve lived in castes and palaces among the richest people of any age. Never….never! Have I stood in greater luxury than surrounds me now. This is a chamber of marvels. There isn’t a king, or queen or emperor that I have ever known or eaten who would step into this room and ever agree to leave it again.

> I knew the future would bring wonders. I did not know it would make them ordinary.

on a side note: while our brains seem to be wired to forget about such abundance in our lives that prior generations gave us, almost every item there not just has no appreciation in our contemporary culture, but is even showered with moralizing vilification and resentment: whether it is using them (e.g. affordable flights, A/Cs), buying them (e.g. overseas produce), producing them (e.g. telegraphs: data-centers), or the shapes or contents they are supposed to come (e.g. the art).

woodpanel··on The Water Footprint of AI
One can criticize ai data centers but the "water consumption"-argument is by far the least-intelligent one and on track on becoming the same kind of populist urban myth that got Germany cancelling (ie destroying) its nuclear plants in order to... checks notes.... save the world.

> No country has managed to reverse the trend of declining birth rate

May I point you to the State of Israel? Its TFR sits at 3.

And if we really want to be nitpicky, and concentrating on the "reverse"-part of your statement, then even Balkan countries shine, as they literally managed to reverse the trend.

woodpanel··on The Water Footprint of AI
"Our lakes run dry" is a meme at this point. Apparently the doomers entirely forgot their kvetching about Lago di Garda drying out a couple of years ago. Memory-holed doesn't even closely describe this sort of behavior.
woodpanel··on Poland now 6th-largest EU economy, ahead of Switzerland and Belgium
Heise.de, German IT and developer news portal, recently posted a story for German software devs about how to become an expat in Poland. What a shift in tonality for German media: From Polish handymen continuosly voting in right-wing "democracy-abandoning" parties to … somehow … doing better than Germany, economically (in terms of growth and outlook).
woodpanel··on Germany Records Historic 12B KWh Solar Feed-In in July 2026
dude. you need infrastructure to have your grid deal with the sudden spikes and sudden drops for it to not go up in flames. why do you think those German excess energy dumps regulary end up having negative prices? Because Germany at some point willingly pays its neighbors for not having its own grid black out.
woodpanel··on Germany Records Historic 12B KWh Solar Feed-In in July 2026
Exactly. I'm starting to wonder how much higher our neighbors' prices are thanks to our excessive excess-energy emergency-dumping during green-energy peaks. How much of that "EU average" is "Germany as a cost externality for its neighbouring energy grids"?
