wood_spirit··on On DeepSeek and export controls
China only has to attack Taiwan to deny the US of TSMC’s production capacity.

Prediction: they will do this as soon as they see sufficient domestic chip production.

The attempts to inshore fabs to the USA is too little too late.

And it doesn’t matter if Trump defends Taiwan and makes China back down - the fabs will have been bombed to bits.

As it is, trump would probably just do sanctions and tariffs, which - like Russia - China will expect to weather.

Stepping back, it feels like the techies working on ai have been celebrating the expense of it all. That techies have been wanting bigger and bigger clusters as some kind of bragging rights and that suits the suits who see it as a most to protect their crazy stock validations. The money was being made not by the miners but by nvidia selling shovels they could name the price of.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Deepseek is demonstrating that if the incentives are aligned to want efficiency then good engineers - and there are plenty of them in every country - can make things fly.

wood_spirit··on On DeepSeek and export controls
> Export controls serve a vital purpose: keeping democratic nations at the forefront of AI development.

As an outsider looking in, I’m not thinking of the USA as a particularly democratic country any more. And I didn’t think its export controls were about democracy, but rather a trade weapon.

wood_spirit··on Pixelfed Hit 500K Users
Sorry I haven’t been following along and I have only a fuzzy idea of how these Twitter competitors work. Do users and posts on pixelfed federate with Bsky?

I’ve heard of some people I know leaving Twitter for bsky. I never used Twitter myself. So if I want to suddenly become social do I have to join bsky to follow them etc or is there a whole constellation of alternatives?

And if there are alternatives, which servers do the programmers who don’t want politics and memes and stuff congregate on?

wood_spirit··on Trae: An AI-powered IDE by ByteDance
This is being talked about in real life as we post on HN: the new administration has a different opinion on this https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cn0y51z7wedt

(I am guessing that there will be a deal floated for Elon to buy TikTok in a few weeks)

wood_spirit··on Lossless Compression of Vector IDs for Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search
Yes the GP said “bandwidth” when they perhaps meant “latency” but the gist and spirit of their post was good. The cpu has a lot of spare cycles, particularly if it can be arranged to be without dependency so it can be crunched instead of stalling?

wood_spirit··on China Suddenly Building Fleet of Special Barges Suitable for Taiwan Landings
Trump is putting the sanctions on anyway

In fact, you can imagine a blockade of Taiwan being introduced to enforce Chinese sanctions that are levied in direct response to American sanctions etc. that could well be the escalation path that china chooses

wood_spirit··on China Suddenly Building Fleet of Special Barges Suitable for Taiwan Landings
It is common for dictators to go to war to divert attention away from internal discontent and unite a country

wood_spirit··on Bad Moon Rising
My point was more meta - the experts don’t have a fixed opinion on the translations of rare ancient texts in the first place, ergo there is nothing to train the llma on.
wood_spirit··on Bad Moon Rising
I remember a time team episode where they found some Ogham script on a stone in an early Christian church now on a fairway on the isle of Mann.

They got photos to the leading professor in Ogham who translated it for them.

I happened to mention this on HN a few months ago in relation to something or other, and a commenter replied to me to explain that that translation was no longer sound, and the current understanding was that the tablet said something completely different instead!

(Found the link they gave! https://www.babelstone.co.uk/Blog/2008/05/throng-of-fifty-wa...)

wood_spirit··on I made $100K from a dick joke
“Then I noticed he was selling the exact same model of laptop so it was easy for me to realize that he had just "bought" my laptop to remove the listing so it wouldn't compete against his”

If he got the laptop but didn’t pay, then he is probably selling it.

If he didn’t get the laptop, then he was trying to sell it on (for a profit) before he even got it from you?

wood_spirit··on AI companies cause most of traffic on forums
Rather than garbage, perhaps just serve up something irrelevant and banal? Or splice sentences from various random project Gutenberg books? And add in a tarpit for good measure.

At least in the end it gives the programmer one last hoorah before the AI makes us irrelevant :)

Do any of the sites use collaborative filtering for “uses who like x also like y” for a nice filter bubble?

I imagine it complements or my even supersede tags.

wood_spirit··on You can use C-Reduce for any language
Creduce is awesome.

I used a test script that spent hours using CSmith to generate random test programs when developing an esoteric llvm target. When they crashed it automatically Creduced and left them for inspection. Invaluable!

wood_spirit··on Show HN: Gemini LLM corrects ASR YouTube transcripts
As an aside, has anyone else had some big hallucinations with the Gemini meet summaries? Have been using it a week or so and loving the quality of the grammar of the summary etc, but noticed two recurring problems: omitting what was actually the most important point raised, and hallucinating things like “person x suggested y do z” when, really, that is absolutely the last thing x would really suggest!
wood_spirit··on Amazon S3 now supports the ability to append data to an object
Will be exciting to see what adaptations are needed and how performance and cost changes for delta lake and iceberg and other cloud mutable data storage formats. It could be really dramatic!

S3 is often used as a lowest common denominator, and a lot of the features of azure and gcs aren’t leveraged by libraries and formats that try to be cross platform so only want to expose features that are available everywhere.

If these days all object stores do append then perhaps all the data storage formats and libs can start leveraging it?

wood_spirit··on Security researchers identify new malware targeting Linux
firewood is a back door, ie a program installed to provide access bypassing the systems normal authentication etc.

The article says they don’t know how the attacker gets access to install this back door in the first place.

wood_spirit··on Security researchers identify new malware targeting Linux
Perhaps we use the term back door in computer security because it comes from the general English expression to get someone or something in by the back door, which more generally is any exploit?
