wood_spirit··on Rust is tier-1 language at Microsoft
Surely a headwind makes an aircraft travel slower over the ground so it takes longer to reach the destination?
wood_spirit··on Young Americans have never witnessed a functioning foreign policy
I’m not sure about the Biden cooperating with Al Qaeda thing (perhaps you mean not intervening when HTS took over? Biden was backing the Kurds at the time) but it was Trump who did a deal with the Taliban re Afghanistan.

The post war Republican Party had been all about building alliances and being nice to allies! The current Republican Party is so different and distant from the stances of the party just 20 years ago.

wood_spirit··on Trusting-Trust Attack against an Entire Linux Distribution
I’ve never found Wheeler’s approach very satisfying. It says “we can’t trust the compiler, so here’s a second compiler.” But I think it is too literal interpretation of Thompson’s attack and it is just moving goalposts not really stopping the essence of the attack. The viruses of the 1990s got so advanced they regularly intercepted the read calls and stripped their payload from inspection so hiding themselves, and you could imagine in the playpen where we think we trust some other external compiler we must also think we trust the read functions on the compromised machine etc. Thompson was thinking at a higher level than this.
wood_spirit··on Mother convicted of: her 5 yo walks short way to pond alone in Virginia
To be clear, not being allowed to possess the eggs, feathers or any other part of a protected species is probably a good thing? Not being able to pretend you “found them on the ground” is probably better stopped than the problem of children really finding things on the ground.
wood_spirit··on You Don't Have a Right to Safe Drinking Water, US Court Rules
Imagine your well becomes contaminated. That might be natural, or it might be caused by eg fracking. If the latter, do you have any rights and recourse and does it make a difference if the poisoner is state, federal or private?

(I’m curious of my own situation as a European with my own well and also not so far from a well documented case against the government because their airbase fire fighting had contaminated groundwater with PFAS.)

wood_spirit··on Vancouver strip club's Instagram taken down over sign featuring lake joke
Are the tech companies actively censoring or subtly deranking pro-Canada sentiment on their platforms? Or is this some activist doing takedowns?
wood_spirit··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
Not alone
wood_spirit··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
Russia is invading Europe. They started years ago.

The US is enabling Russia.

In fact, the USA is supporting Russia. This might not be entirely intentional, and a lot of ways of trying to excuse it, but it’s what the reality on the ground adds up to.

wood_spirit··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan all also exposed the weakness of American might? Was the last big war that the US won WW2?
wood_spirit··on 'People are going to get screwed' Pennsylvania voters unite against data centres
Yes i didn’t mean deep. Berms and roof gardens can completely hide them.
wood_spirit··on 'People are going to get screwed' Pennsylvania voters unite against data centres
They should be underground (that’s not shockingly expensive at the scale we talk about) and a net green-energy-driven power producer which they give away for free and pay property taxes. The list of things they could do that would be a cheap 1-2% of the total build and running costs to soften it are long.
wood_spirit··on 'People are going to get screwed' Pennsylvania voters unite against data centres
Even if invisible they would not be a popular neighbour because they are a very overt reminder to the poor people around them how uneven the wealth and political power distribution is between them and the tech exec owners?
wood_spirit··on Three schoolgirls in Kinsale pulled up a pea plant covered in warts (2014)
Can we stop every comment thread being about why is this written by or with the help of AI? Right now as I comment that is pretty much all the comments here are about!!

Isn’t the actual underlying science - which I don’t recall seeing on HN before - more interesting?

I would like to know how it turned out - does it work in practice, is it practical to deploy, is it already or soon going to make any impact on real farming?

wood_spirit··on We could save petabytes of cache storage with Zstandard and Pingora
Wait, what? Don’t browsers support concatenated zstd streams?

My reading - and I care because I’ve been using concatenation tricks in parquet - is that this is required by the standard.

In the distant past I made a jinja2-like template system for server side rendering that precompressed the static bits and injected the short dynamic bits into the output stream as literals with some basic lz match rewriting in the following chunks etc. This kind of trick ought be better with zstd frames.

wood_spirit··on Dutch central bank moves 86 tonnes of gold from US citing 'geopolitical unrest'
Is it a coincidence that USA and Canada now have the same amount, but they equalised without transferring any to Canada, and they can say they reduced in both?
wood_spirit··on Benchmarking Vector Indexes
Increasingly those specialised vector databases are fading as mainstream normal vanilla databases grow good-enough vector columns and indexes.
wood_spirit··on Benchmarking Vector Indexes
Really look forward to seeing the results.

It would be good if it includes as many things as possible, such as redid, annoy, voyager and lancedb etc and not just oltp sql dbs.

wood_spirit··on I think the military commissary's freezers were hacked
Or criminals (perhaps ransom not paid etc) or Kiddies for the lolz or US teen lashing out or any of the gazillion nationalist-aligned hackers who don’t like USA.

But a misconfiguration is even more likely.

Can’t think _why_ freezers need to be web connected and remotely managed in the first place. What benefits does that bring the commissary in normal operation?

wood_spirit··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
The US is an outliner on prison terms and sizes etc. Under the surface it is hard to tell if the public lead the prisons or if the big prison business shapes public opinion but from the outside it seems crazy.

Different societies are at different places on the prison is for punishment to prison is for rehabilitation spectrum, and their reoffending rates reflect that.

wood_spirit··on Solving the 1+N Query Problem
Of course mainstream ORMs leave a lot of perf on the table. For example, I once patched the ORM in a struggling php web app that i had to help. I started as a logger profiler thingy but then had the crazy idea of being a trace optimiser. By recognising the call sites from previous visits I could spot the 1+N and select * etc and actually transcode that into better sql in the next run etc. Shockingly it made a massive difference and I was surprised that normal ORMs aren’t doing that kind of thing.
wood_spirit··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Yanis Varoufakis - aside from being radically left and becoming the finance minister in Greece after their financial crisis hit - is a professor in game theory and economics.

He did a pretty good explanation of the difference between theory and practice in his Rest is Politics Leading podcast interview recently :).

Sticks in my mind and well worth listening.

wood_spirit··on Vomit: Clean up Claude 5's token output with a separate LLM
Meta to this is anyone remember those days - ages ago now, probably months at least! - when Anthropic’s moral stance against the administration (combined with general consensus they had by far the best model) was making them the underdog champion that got a swell of support on HN? Recently the temp on HN seems to be that they’ve jumped the shark? Their brand doesn’t ooze ethics any more and their models disappoint?
wood_spirit··on A joke domain purchase turned in geopolitical warfare
Generally at altitude the wind goes from west to east. During the Cold War the US would launch spy balloons to overfly Russia whilst the wind was blowing against the Russians reciprocating. This is generally true in the current Ukraine war too.

wood_spirit··on Rings forged from meteorites may have been fashionable among ancient Greek elite
Perhaps sometimes they saw it hit and went to find it? But the night is long and people should be indoors asleep near the fire and meteorites fall all around the clock anyway?

So perhaps they mostly just picked weird rocks up off the ground, as the Inuit did? When you spend time outside with the herds you probably notice unusual wrongs.

wood_spirit··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
I thought there wasn’t exit polls in this particular by-election?
wood_spirit··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
Brexit hardly caused unity. It split the country almost exactly down the middle. And nobody on either side seems happy with the result.
wood_spirit··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
Britain has a first-past-the-post election system so the candidate with the most votes wins in each constituency.

As Farage didn’t get an absolute majority last time, and as a majority of voters didn’t even vote last time, I was extrapolating that Count Binface had a real chance. Not just as a protest vote, but a magnet for everyone not supporting Farage as well as everyone wanting a laugh (in a British boaty-mcboatface way).

Perhaps a serious clean-up-politics neutral candidate would have done better, like Martin Bell - a very well known war correspondent - who stood on an anti corruption ticket against the scandal riddled Conservative Neil Hamilton in Tatton in 1997.

wood_spirit··on Denmark: EVs Make Up 97% of New Private Car Sales in July
It is interesting that the big selling brands are Skoda (VW group) and VW itself, then a resurgent Tesla in third place. These are companies that are claiming hardship from Chinese EV imports and VW is planning to lay off 100K employees.
wood_spirit··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
Both can be - and seem to be - true.
wood_spirit··on For most US drivers, EVs offer emissions benefits and cost savings
