wonks··on Ask HN: What's your favorite news source?
I think The Intercept can be a really good antidote to pro-government sensationalism. I like The Guardian, too.
wonks··on Ghostery is Acquired by Cliqz
"The Cliqz anti-tracking technology is a truly revolutionary solution that uses algorithmic blocking that doesn’t require a blocklist..."

That sounds an awful lot like the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Privacy Badger.

wonks··on Majority of Android VPNs can’t be trusted to make users more secure
Pretty spooky stuff. I couldn't find a list, though. Are there any good ones other than F-Secure?
wonks··on Worried About the Privacy of Your Messages? Download Signal
The lack of federation is unnerving, but the main server-less alternative I know of is PGP or maybe OTR, and PGP is way too hard for most people IMO. Also, OTR doesn't trust the fingerprint from first messages, so even that introduces an extra hoop to jump through.
wonks··on A Guide to the Breads of India
Thank God you posted this; my office ordered Indian food today.
wonks··on Microsoft Becomes Linux Foundation Platinum Member
Well, it sounds like they're working with Linux in some markets and going their own way on others.
wonks··on Show HN: Primitive for macOS
Please consider removing "Very wow" from the homepage. That joke is old now and if anything you'll lose sales.
wonks··on Not Your Problem
Either way, this rule doesn't apply to Hacker News, right...?
wonks··on Show HN: An Extremely Simple Election Forecast in Scala
I wanted to write something like this in Haskell a couple weeks ago but didn't know where to start. Thanks for the help!
wonks··on Darling – MacOS translation layer for Linux
Exactly. That's what I use.
wonks··on Darling – MacOS translation layer for Linux
Hmm. I guess many developers use just the right amount of MacOS specific tools to justify this now. The git client Tower is something I've eyed before, but most tools I use are available on Linux, and I say that as someone who uses a Mac at work.
wonks··on Homebrew 1.0.0
I also had to do this. Keep in mind that ```brew update``` might take a while to output anything when you do this (it did for me), and then it will ask you to wait while it migrates to a new directory.
wonks··on Government Surveillance Poses Cyber-Security Threats, ISPs Say
Opening up your customers' traffic to third parties makes things less secure? Whoulda thunk?
wonks··on Dolphins recorded having a conversation 'just like two people' for first time
"That's it for us monkeys."

wonks··on Facebook deletes Norway PM's post as 'napalm girl' row escalates
I feel like this is a good argument for taking another look at projects like Diaspora and Friendica Red
wonks··on [dead]
I can access it. Also, Down For Everyone Or Just Me says it is up as well.
wonks··on NIST's new password rules – summary
I've been telling people to use correct-horse-battery-staples for years. Glad to see I'm not the only professional thinking this.
wonks··on Hulu is eliminating its free, ad-supported streaming service
cringes Well, I admit there are only a few things they don't have the full rights to, and they're shows I don't watch, but I still find this grating. They said "ad-free" and I pay for that. Not "almost ad-free".
wonks··on New York to bar sex offenders on parole from playing Pokemon Go
And we wonder why they keep gaining weight...
wonks··on How Japan came to believe in depression
I think I read once that in Japan they animate first and then record voiceovers afterwards?
wonks··on How Japan came to believe in depression
The only TRUE way to watch anime. ;-)

The anime club at my college was so adamant about this that they put a no-dubs rule in their constitution.

wonks··on Alpine Linux 3.4.0 Released
I see it uses busybox. Does this mean it's for low-spec instances and embedded devices, or did they base it on busybox because shellshock only affected GNU Bash and they felt the GNU tools couldn't be trusted anymore?
wonks··on William Gibson has written a comic
As opposed to the current situation:

"In other news, John Spinnerman of Conglomerate News Network has stepped down after fabricating the story of the latest major scandal, in a sequence of events Beltway insiders are now calling Gategate..."

wonks··on Android re-engineered for PC. Meet Remix OS.
With more and more businesses using stuff in-browser, I have been wondering for a while if people will bother to continue paying for Windows seats
wonks··on Study finds women are responsible for half of some online abuse on Twitter in UK
The article does link to one investigation from The Guardian about abusive comments left on articles written by journalists whose genders are known.
wonks··on New Sublime Text update
There have been times where files have been too big even for Sublime Text to load on my Macbook without slowing it down. In those cases I've used Vim with the LargeFile plugin.
