wonks··on Fungus in Chernobyl nuclear disaster zone has mutated to 'feed' on radiation (2024)
I'm honestly disappointed that this post got so much attention with such a dubious source. The article doesn't even link to a press release, as far as I can tell.
wonks··on InteractiVenn – Interactive Venn Diagrams
Dammit, beat me to it!
wonks··on Lapis: A Web Framework for Lua
As in "lua rock"?
wonks··on When did Postgres become cool?
It surely was the "I'm so cool you don't even know I'm cool" kind of cool.
wonks··on Microsoft want court to toss lawsuit accusing them of abusing open-source code
Wait, are you saying that there is legal precedent for training an LLM with open source code to generate proprietary code?
wonks··on Layoffs Are Cruel and Don't Work
I suppose if there were backers who would issue loans instead of investing in equity, the workers could form a cooperative. I don't think that would fully eliminate the risk of them getting fired (by each other), but perhaps it would be a start?
wonks··on Disney's writer wage theft, a year on
Interesting! If you don't mind me asking, what country are you in? I'm asking because I'm an American and I don't think I've ever heard of this.
wonks··on Nextspace: a desktop environment that brings a NeXTSTEP look and feel to Linux
Is there any particular reason why GNUstep is getting so much attention today, or are people just posting all these things in response to each other?
wonks··on Kropotkin escapes from prison
And talking about Kropotkin no less!
wonks··on Lemmy Release v0.14.0: Federation with Mastodon and Pleroma
If Lemmy's voting system is incompatible with Mastodon & Pleroma, then does that also mean that reshares and Favorites from Mastodon or Pleroma won't count as upvotes in Lemmy?
wonks··on Ripgrep 13.0
How does it compare to the_silver_searcher?
wonks··on Doom Running on an IKEA Lamp [video]
Has the "running DOOM" meme gone too far?
wonks··on Catala: A Programming Language for the Law
Programmers and lawyers: together at last!
wonks··on This Anime Does Not Exist
Okay, has it started to train on horror anime? (Don't you worry, it's safe for work.)

wonks··on Calibre 5.0
I know, I feel so bad for him.
wonks··on Motoko, a programming language for building directly on the internet
Ah, I was wondering which anime they were referring to with this...
wonks··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2020)
I'm not sure what the NCMEC partnership is about either. I'm just going to apply to the Spotlight position.
wonks··on Who’s (Still) Hiring?
Thanks for this. This could be really useful.
wonks··on Leon: An open-source personal assistant
Is it just me, or is humanizing these things so much itself kind of creepy? I prefer not to call Siri "she" for that reason alone.
wonks··on FreeBSD 12.0 is now available
Well, they contracted "edge" with "internal", so I think they mean network edge?
wonks··on Chrome 69: “www.” subdomain missing from URL
Something that I was struggling with just today. Of all the days to update Chrome... At first I thought my redirect was broken.
wonks··on A Guide to Law Enforcement Spying Technology
This reminds me of the browser extension TrackMeNot, which just spams search engines. https://cs.nyu.edu/trackmenot/
wonks··on GnuPG 2.1.23 released
"gpg: "gpg" is now installed as "gpg" and not anymore as "gpg2". If needed, the new configure option --enable-gpg-is-gpg2 can be used to revert this."

Aha. I was wondering if this would be deemed a mere sequel to GPG 1 forever.

wonks··on Standard Notes Announces Security Audit Results
I've been interested in this project since they made themselves known on HN. Seeing that they're this committed to security makes me consider the possibility that they're for real and not just another fly-by-night.
wonks··on Emacs is sexy
You're just inviting the "decent text editor" joke, aren't you? ;-) But yes, if all you want is text editing I'm not sure what's better than Sublime. I've hard good things about VS Code lately, though.
wonks··on Emacs is sexy
Personally, I still really like Sublime. The GUI makes it very easy to pick up.
wonks··on The Dangerous Academic Is an Extinct Species
Only if we accept that racism is dead. To find proof to the contrary, we need only look to popular responses to videos of unarmed black men being killed by men with guns. And that's just scratching the surface.
wonks··on The Dangerous Academic Is an Extinct Species
That Murray was attacked during an unrelated talk is uncontested. My objection is that you referred to the defenders of centuries-old superstition as unorthodox simply because the cultural tide began to turn against them in the 20th century.
wonks··on The Dangerous Academic Is an Extinct Species
Orthodoxy is not a few people (correctly) arguing that we should STOP stating that black people are inferior. Furthermore, a Nazi who happens to be against a particular war is not "peaceful but unorthodox".
