wonderbore··on Let's stop ascribing meaning to code points (2017)
> Many code points are characters. For instance, everything in the ASCII range.

Is 0x07 (BEL) a character?

wonderbore··on Show HN: MiniMail – Disposable Email Service for Everyone
They’re disposable. The whole service is disposable. That’s the whole point.

This isn’t a redirect to your existing email a-la-iCloud+ “Hide My Email”. You close the tab and the address is gone.

wonderbore··on The Victim Cloud: Gullibility in the golden age of scams
There's no such limit anymore. It costs more, but all phones support SMS concatenation
wonderbore··on Italian watchdog bans use of Google Analytics
Oh yes they do. GA is part of a company that also sells services in Italy. They should follow the law if they want to keep earning that non-US Adwords money that allows GA to remain free.
wonderbore··on Canada to Compel YouTube, TikTok and Streamers to Boost Domestic Content
Are there any precedents of large companies doing that (successfully)?

YouTube particularly can't afford to play games like this because TikTok has no problem following the rules and taking YouTube’s viewers like it's been doing.

wonderbore··on Canada to Compel YouTube, TikTok and Streamers to Boost Domestic Content
Doesn't YouTube already kind of do that? If you're not logged in, you will see content popular in the current region, which often is from the region itself. Once logged in, I generally see more of the same content I watch and search for.
wonderbore··on GitHub Copilot for individuals available without waitlist, with free trial
Reasonable doesn’t mean a hobbyist would pay $100/year for this. That’s not pocket money for most of the world.
wonderbore··on WTF Nextdoor? Over 130 clicks to disable email and push notifications?
Also works:

   $$('selector').forEach(el => el.click())
Every browser console has extra helpers: https://firefox-source-docs.mozilla.org/devtools-user/web_co...
wonderbore··on WTF Nextdoor? Over 130 clicks to disable email and push notifications?
Unfortunately there's no such thing as free forwarding. help@ sees an email coming from your email account and it can be marked as spam. Not worth it. Just mark it as spam.
wonderbore··on WTF Nextdoor? Over 130 clicks to disable email and push notifications?
Granularity is fine and often welcome, but following the unsubscribe link should also show what else is enabled and let me disable it on the spot.

Unfortunately this dark pattern is rather common, I think most social networks do that.

wonderbore··on WTF Nextdoor? Over 130 clicks to disable email and push notifications?
I think that at a minimum we need to ban "opt-out" notifications and the abuse of "vital" mailing lists you can't unsubscribe from.

I'm tired of having to deal with (i.e. Mark as spam) a barrage of emails every time I register to a service.

wonderbore··on WTF Nextdoor? Over 130 clicks to disable email and push notifications?
I don't know the dynamics of Nextdoor, but others complaining and organizing against me would scare me.
wonderbore··on How ice cream became the ultimate American comfort food (2021)
Great point. You can also tell by the color: The brighter the green the worse the quality.
wonderbore··on Internet Explorer 11 has retired and is officially out of support
Microsoft made the mistake of letting users keep IE11 next to Edge. Egregious.

Having a IE mode for whitelisted websites would have killed IE11 on public internet a long time ago.

“Website broken? Click here to try IE11 mode.”

But no, IE is still on the desktop and people will use it for both intranet and internet

wonderbore··on Quick Tip: Enable Touch ID for Sudo (2020)
iOS made the mistake of conflating wifi with “internet”, it will even attempt to kick you off a wifi if it doesn’t have internet, but it will gladly show you the icon even before logging you into the captive portal.

The current situation is incredibly badly-engineered on so many levels. It’s maddening, really. One of the worst parts is that the modal disappears as soon as you attempt to switch apps (or god forbid you try to respond to a message you received)

Notification + real internet connectivity indicator + a regular Captive Portal/Internet App would go a long way.

wonderbore··on Internet Explorer 11 has retired and is officially out of support

wonderbore··on Internet Explorer 11 has retired and is officially out of support
Is this Groundhog Day? How many more times will IE be declared dead? Official support is irrelevant if the browser is still stubbornly used by users. Most websites have moved on more than 5 years ago.

This news is meaningless. This confirms it:

> For supported operating systems, Internet Explorer 11 will continue receiving security updates and technical support for the lifecycle of the Windows version on which it is installed.

wonderbore··on Quick Tip: Enable Touch ID for Sudo (2020)
Software stealing focus is an awful antipattern and I wish macOS would fix this crap. Even on iOS, which is otherwise good with this, will gladly interrupt whatever you’re doing to show you a fullscreen captive portal. Obnoxious, especially if you’re just walking by an open wifi you joined at some point in your life.
wonderbore··on Apple Could Kill CAPTCHAs with Private Access Tokens
Apple has 12k+ engineers, I doubt they won’t find a few thousands to just do it.
wonderbore··on System Preferences Reimagined on macOS
> leave stuff the hell alone when it works fine

Agreed.

However I always take too long to locate stuff in System Preferences. Zig-zag scanning is so inefficient it's easier to just search for stuff: That's a UI failure.

wonderbore··on Reddit bans ‘SFW’ deepfake community
You’re probably replying to the wrong person. I’m just saying that everyone can fall for fake stuff.
wonderbore··on Reddit bans ‘SFW’ deepfake community
Those are rookie numbers. I think the % of people who can be easily fooled is almost 100%. There are fewer and fewer people who live their lives doubting what they see unless they’re already attached to the opposite of that idea.

Most people are not trained to detect deep fakes and certainly most of us here still would fall for a deepfake unless we’re specifically looking for it.

wonderbore··on Fresh – Next-gen web framework
Did Ruby run on CDNs? Didn’t think so. That’s what “on the edge” means.
wonderbore··on Fresh – Next-gen web framework
Replace island with widget. It means each part can render/rehydrate independently, I suppose

Transmission was great back when I used it. For Windows users there’s now WebTorrent, which has a similar UI (but a much more compact feature set)
wonderbore··on Tell HN: Google does not list application permissions in the Play Store any more
The geolocation information is not for you, it’s just sent along the rest of your information.
wonderbore··on Show HN: The Bitcoin Note – Secure, Self-Custodial Bitcoin Wallets in Cash Form
> People don't throw away foreign currency

Are you sure? If I find a single bill from a random country I assume the worth isn't a whole lot. Such bills get stashed in the souvenir box which may or may not be thrown out at any point when space runs out.

> I don't follow any of your reasoning here

I don't think the birth certificate analogy is that hard to follow. It's easier to hold onto a US-letter-sized document than it is to save a single bill that you should not place in a wallet.

Does this mean we’ll soon get a range picker when we sign up for iCloud?

wonderbore··on CodeMirror 6.0 Stable Release
If Python 3 was just named Cobra 1, I guaranteed that Python 2 would have been “forked”

Increasing the version is a straightforward way to say “n is outdated, use n+1.” As a publisher I don’t want to start a new project with zero followers, especially if the project does the same exact thing my previous project did, just better.
