wombat-man··on Federal Communications Commission scraps limit on broadcast TV ownership
I love being able to watch sports for free with my antenna. I hope that doesn't end for a long time.
wombat-man··on How to Make a Nintendo 64 Game in 2026
I have mixed feelings about it. I don't agree with how my country often ends up using these technologies, but defense tech and weaponry still seems pretty necessary. The US is not the only one doing this. Should they wait for their adversaries to have the upper hand? I don't think it's such a bad thing, as long as they can put the right people in charge. That's a whole other problem.
wombat-man··on How to Make a Nintendo 64 Game in 2026
Yeah I don't really like Luckey, or what I've heard from him anyways. But in the run up to launch the Chromatic, it became pretty clear that this guy, for whatever reason, is really passionate about gameboy. I have been less impressed with the other emulator/fpga machines. the chromatic is solid though.
wombat-man··on That time when I failed the Microsoft interview
Wow, I got the same question, wonder if we interviewed with the same dude.

I have had an interview or two where I got a programming challenge, and I was able to solve it with intuition. I don't know exactly if I didn't explain my reasoning well enough, or if my code was just too messy even though the tests passed, but I didn't get the job.

Sometimes they want some insight into how you think, and they might not get it even if you solve it.

wombat-man··on Big Food vs. the People
Don't they still need to win to get paid?
wombat-man··on The iPhone Upgrade Program is being replaced by Apple Upgrade
Yeah I switch between android and iPhone sometimes so there's always something I forget to transfer over. After a long enough time I can wipe it and have it as a backup phone.
wombat-man··on Did They Ghost You?
what's weird about that though is they must have had some system to track candidates that would have been turned over to somebody.
wombat-man··on CD sales growth outpaced vinyl in the first half of 2026
Let's bring back MiniDisc next!
wombat-man··on Grok Build is open source
I read that they bought quite a few, but their DC build out is not very fast. Maybe they should just resell the hardware
wombat-man··on Grok Build is open source
They bought a lot of GPUs. They could still do these things on that hardware with someone else's model.
wombat-man··on Why American ambulance rides are so expensive
Yeah, every EMT I know was way underpaid for how crazy stressful it was. Especially considering how expensive the ride was
wombat-man··on Costco is the anti-Amazon
They also ship a lot of items.
wombat-man··on Dolphin Emulator Progress Release 2606
hopefully someone makes a phone mount for the steam controller.
wombat-man··on Elastic lays off 7% of employees
yeah, and no public option
wombat-man··on BYD is bringing its 5-min 'Flash' electric car charging to Canada
Idk we have a lot of protectionism around vehicle sales in the US already. I don't think it'll be easy but it could happen.
wombat-man··on Ask HN: Are most corporate SWE jobs performative?
I guess it depends on the company and the project. If you really think your work or your project isn't useful to the company, or it feels performative, maybe you should try to hop to another project or company.
wombat-man··on WWDC 2026: Apple is Folding
I have a 9 pro and it was very slippery at first. I put it face down on a slanted table and it slid right off once.

Anyway, I took the case off after a while. It's not new anymore. Your mileage may vary, but despite dropping it a bunch, it hasn't shattered and the edge only shows some slight marks from falling.

wombat-man··on I'm building a parallel internet, and it's called The Thinnernet
Yeah, reading his biography was interesting. He had the problem of tech not quite being where he wanted it to be over and over. But eventually things really hit.
wombat-man··on Nvidia is proposing a beast of a CPU system for Windows PCs
I think this is part of why capex is so high for the big players. Yes data centers are expensive to build but it's also about outbidding for the labor and materials needed to build those. They'd rather build compute they don't need and then lease it then let competitors have their own machines.
wombat-man··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
Oh yeah. I can't remember which LLM, but one helped me repair my dryer.
wombat-man··on The desperation of NYTimes
Their AI support bot is insultingly bad, I'd kind of prefer a contact email and an auto response. good grief.
wombat-man··on The desperation of NYTimes
I cancelled recently because they really started hassling me more about account sharing.

My friends, I do not share my NYT account. I have two computers at work, I have a number of personal devices. I don't know what number NYT thinks is normal for a person to have, but because I am over that number they were requiring me to login and enter in an OTP multiple times a day basically.

Anyway, it finally got to me. I'll get my news somewhere else I guess. I just don't think they take feedback seriously unless it comes with a cancellation.

wombat-man··on The desperation of NYTimes
I never check it, and still get these.
wombat-man··on The desperation of NYTimes
I cancelled last week and it was all on the web, pretty easy.
wombat-man··on Meta workers can opt out of being tracked at work up to 30 min
If you can hang, it pays great. I don't work there but I know some who do.
wombat-man··on Meta workers can opt out of being tracked at work up to 30 min
Yeah same. I guess I'll barista FIRE at some point and maybe have some little side projects here and there.
wombat-man··on Bricks and Minifigs Stole a Man's $200k Lego Collection
yeah, I guess you would need a lawyer willing to work on spec. This just seems like a winnable case but IANAL.
wombat-man··on Bricks and Minifigs Stole a Man's $200k Lego Collection
I haven't dealt with anything like this, so maybe this is naive, but wouldn't you also sue for legal fees as apart of the damages?
wombat-man··on FBI arrests CIA official with $40M in gold bars in his home
interested in knowing what book, if it was good.
wombat-man··on Waymo updates 3,800 robotaxis after they 'drive into standing water'
I more meant that it could maybe see a significant difference in the road, and know to take caution, not to try to gauge the depth of a submerged roadway.
