wombat-man··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Yeah, I wouldn't say it's bad... but it's not for me. did not finish.
wombat-man··on DoorDash Spent $1.4M Trying to Stop Mamdani from Becoming Mayor. Now We Know Why
I think there's a business there, for sure, but the markup is definitely a problem for some. I think below a certain order volume it might be hard to get enough delivery people at the ready. As they ask customers to absorb more of the cost the volume could drop. If they don't have enough delivery people then that adds to the delivery time which makes it less and less worth it, at least to me.

I really dislike the unreliable delivery times. 99% of the time I just use the apps, or more likely the restaurant's site, to place the order and pick it up myself.

I have the time to do this though, so maybe it's more valuable to busier people, like parents.

wombat-man··on Apple Mac mini review
Maybe just run on an A18Pro instead of one of the M processors. If you're not needing a screen, I think the actual box could be quite small too. Maybe the size of an iPhone. One or two USB ports.

I guess you could build it into a keyboard if you wanted to, but I don't like the apple keyboards so that would be a downside for me.

wombat-man··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
yeah it took me years to get used to the nuances of MacOS after growing up with windows. Both are fine.
wombat-man··on Apple Mac mini review
Would love to see them put out a Mac mini Neo to line up with the laptop now that the Mac Mini is becoming a more performant, expensive device.
wombat-man··on ER visits for gambling disorders doubled after expanded online gambling market
Wow, good thing I'm a curmudgeon who only wants to bet at an IRL sportsbook. A place I only get around to visiting every few years.

No good can come of me having a gambling app, I already fool around too much with stocks.

wombat-man··on Diesel prices in U.S. top $6 a gallon for first time
I don't even really understand Israel's game plan here. Iran took a lot of damage but now they control the strait, they have a lot of leverage. Hard to know how it's going to shake out, but how is Israel better off now?
wombat-man··on iPhone Duo
I try and usually succeed at using my phones for around 3 years, so it's not out of the question. Still have another year on my current one, I'll check out the next duo next year.
wombat-man··on iPhone Duo
There used to be a pretty big gap between iPhone and android in terms of polish. that gap keeps narrowing, but it is still there for sure.
wombat-man··on Fastpotify
I gave YouTube music a try, mostly for the free premium and I have to say, it's ok. It still hiccups sometimes when I'm on the subway or a plane but I don't miss Spotify.

I do have a more pared down selection of mp3s loaded on my device in case of emergency, but I use it less and less now.

wombat-man··on Fastpotify
It's always been terrible afaik. I don't know why they bother
wombat-man··on Decompiling a Nintendo 64 game in 84 days
I don't know how they made it, but there was a GoldenEye made for Xbox 360 that seems to only update the UI. The controls are maybe a little different, but you can swap between original and updated renderer in game. Anyway, they couldn't ship in the end due to legal stuff.
wombat-man··on Apple Introduces New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
Yeah I stepped down to a smaller MBP. the only reason I didn't go for an air is my home setup with dual monitors involves using the HDMI port. There probably is a dock or something out there though.
wombat-man··on US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call?
It does, but only for one of the parties.
wombat-man··on US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call?
It's very tiring to watch this happen over and over.
wombat-man··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
Wild that it is somehow worth it to stream video to every visitor on the hopes that it'll get them to stick around longer or see an ad in the video. That conversion number has to be crazy low.
wombat-man··on The US tried to stop cartel money-laundering; devastated mom-and-pop businesses
I think it's possible, but pretty difficult. There's just too much money to be made selling drugs to the US.
wombat-man··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
Yeah they are getting really close to being awesome. I'll use my tablet until they iron things out.
wombat-man··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
I didn't realize even realities was out already, I'll look into it, thanks!
wombat-man··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
You mean like xreal? I think I'd like something I can wear around a bit more casually. the xreals look great but I need them to get a little higher quality before buying. I would probably use them to watch movies on airplanes, or maybe work from home.
wombat-man··on Mark Zuckerberg attacks 'closed' AI rivals as Meta returns to open models
I think the plan is to move on to selling compute. So yeah, open your models so people can pay to run them on Meta hardware.
wombat-man··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
People misuse all types of technology, yes. For now I'm not wearing any camera on my glasses partially because I don't want people being wary of me, but also I don't think it'd be that helpful. I am fine taking my phone out when a camera is needed.

If anyone comes up with a nice set without a camera, I'll consider it.

wombat-man··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
It wouldn't do that. I think it would be more of a HUD that works with your phone/devices? Maybe some kind of wrist controller like the meta display already has.

I don't have a pitch deck ready to go, but I think if constrained to not have a camera, product teams may still come up with a compelling product.

wombat-man··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
how would they know they are smartglasses? people looking at you head on can't see the display, depending on the set.
wombat-man··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
I hope one of these companies pulls off a compelling set of glasses with a display and no camera.

wombat-man··on Federal Communications Commission scraps limit on broadcast TV ownership
I love being able to watch sports for free with my antenna. I hope that doesn't end for a long time.
wombat-man··on How to Make a Nintendo 64 Game in 2026
I have mixed feelings about it. I don't agree with how my country often ends up using these technologies, but defense tech and weaponry still seems pretty necessary. The US is not the only one doing this. Should they wait for their adversaries to have the upper hand? I don't think it's such a bad thing, as long as they can put the right people in charge. That's a whole other problem.
wombat-man··on How to Make a Nintendo 64 Game in 2026
Yeah I don't really like Luckey, or what I've heard from him anyways. But in the run up to launch the Chromatic, it became pretty clear that this guy, for whatever reason, is really passionate about gameboy. I have been less impressed with the other emulator/fpga machines. the chromatic is solid though.
