wolvoleo··on HERMES radio enables voice and data communication over vast distances
I heard encryption is also allowed for disaster assistance by hams, obviously you don't want to transmit personal details of victims in the clear, stuff like that.
wolvoleo··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
It's probably the single one time where I would actually want ads.

For example roaming the city at 4am on a Saturday and trying to find some place with hot food. Google failed miserably at this. Eventually I found something but just because I knew it was often open at night. It was also marked open on Google Maps but never came up in searches there. Probably other places paid Google more for a listing despite being closed at that time.

Not sure how Apple does with this as I don't have any Apple anymore except a work iPad. It's too limited for me in terms of what I can install. But there's certainly some room for improvement in mapping.

wolvoleo··on Irish data protection watchdog fines Google €403M over GDPR breaches
Knowing Ireland and its dependency on big tech this is the watered-down version.

Many issues aren't even followed up by their privacy legislator at all. US big tech companies choose Ireland for tax avoidance and permissive privacy regulators and if that were to change Ireland would use a massive amount of jobs and thus tax revenue.

wolvoleo··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
> It is perfectly possible to introduce EU laws that protect the population of Europe from the US using European banks as a weapon against law-abiding people.

Yes it is but it's going to be necessary to have an alternative first.

Right now especially in point of sale solutions there's a practical monopoly by visa and mastercard within the EU and it's going to take years to replace that with a local solution.

wolvoleo··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
Agreed mostly but there's some exceptions. Like the first gulf war, America did come to the aid of Kuwait as it was attacked by Iraq.

Of course this was motivated by oil interests and not human rights but I can't call them the 'bad guys' here.

wolvoleo··on What happened to the Snowden archive
Did he even have access to Russian intelligence?

Also, at some point they were just done reporting on what was there.

Remember that Snowden got three journalists involved so they could make a decision on what to release, so they didn't expose details of people undercover etc and put real lives in danger. It was not meant to go to the public in its entirety.

wolvoleo··on I don't like passkeys
I just don't use Google or Apple accounts for everything. I don't want my whole life in the hands of some big tech deciding how I should prove to them that I'm me.

I did use Microsoft 365 (business version) for my email but they also decided I should use their MFA app so I left. I did have my yubikey as second factor but they keep pushing their stupid authenticator app.

wolvoleo··on CCC invites all model citizens to 40C3
Ah yeah I don't have the attention span for that.

I do go to the hacker camps sometimes but they don't sell out like that. Usually they're available for months leading up to the event.

I wonder why they don't just make the event big enough?

wolvoleo··on The first new cat species discovered in 100 years
Using a litter box is not training but instinct. It just works because it's the perfect cat toilet.

Some breeds like Bengals can actually be trained a bit to do things like fetch and roll over. But the common house cat not so much no.

wolvoleo··on The first new cat species discovered in 100 years
That's not always the case. Some feral cats from colonies that are TNRed are found to be very receptive to humans and instead of returned sometimes offered for adoption instead of returned (the R in TNR)

However these come from a centuries-long bloodline of house cats of course. A species that's never been domesticated is very different.

Ugh yeah I'd hate that. Here the bins are just in the street. And nothing is personalized. People do watch what you put in but more to see if there's something valuable.

> Just remind them, public photography is not a crime, and that there is no right to privacy in the public sphere, and why don’t they just smile and enjoy the fact that they are frozen in time on some strangers device, just like a strangers memory they have no right to erase. This is the needed context.

Hacker events are not public places and they are free to set different rules on photography. Considering it's a privacy and counterculture thing their aversion is pretty understandable IMO.

Is it still so hard to get a ticket? In previous years I've looked at getting one but they seemed to be sold out constantly.
wolvoleo··on Autism is genetic – and why this information matters now
That sounds too much like people saying 'just don't be depressed' to me.

And constantly masking (whether or not it's consciously done) is taking its toll too. Because you spend a lot of 'brainpower' second-guessing yourself.

For me it was really liberating finding people that accept me as I am so I don't have to worry all the time. And I became more successful at work when I stopped pretending to be someone I'm not.

And I definitely don't want to 'seem normal' to not attract the ire of the anti-vaxxers anti-neurodivergent crowd. They're my enemies so they deserve no such adaptation.

wolvoleo··on Autism is genetic – and why this information matters now
AI certainly makes it easier for me with ADHD (and probably Autism too, they often go together).

It helps me do planning and research which are the boring parts of a project for me and I abhor them so I tend to procrastinate so long that the project is no longer relevant. AI helps me get through this phase much more easily.

wolvoleo··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
Well what I mean is tanks across the border. Some psyops and a drone here and there is not really cause to go all out. A tank division invading Poland would be, of course.

And Europa has some deterrent but nothing compared to the Russian one. We have a major 'missile gap' right now.

wolvoleo··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
We should just build up enough nuclear deterrent to prevent Russia from attacking us.

We've been dependent on the US for this but this was also by the US' own design. They didn't want many countries to have nukes. So the whole 'Europe is not doing its bit' is not really justified.

We don't need more tanks and soldiers because if we go at Russia like Ukraine does, so many people will die that it doesn't matter who wins. We just need to be able to destroy Russia so thoroughly that they won't think about attacking us, just like they don't attack the US. Mutually assured destruction has kept the world safe for almost a century but now with the US no longer committed to NATO we just need to build our own.

wolvoleo··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
Also, extinction rebellion goes after motorways blocking private cars, not trains which are a sustainable mode of transport they support.

No, I'm pretty sure this would have been a farmer splinter group. The last time they protested with tractors on the motorways it caused a deadly accident, they won't be getting away with that anymore. So they'll be looking for new ways to protest.

Also, today was Prinsjesdag, similar to the state of the Union in the US. It was a day to expect local protests. Nobody in the Netherlands thinks Russia is behind this.

Actually there seems to be one on nexusmods: https://www.nexusmods.com/games/cyberpunk2077/collections/bp...

I'll try that soon. Right now it's still a bit too hot to be in VR anyway. It's more of a winter activity for me.

wolvoleo··on Will there be a 7G?
No for 4G/5G the line gets a bit blurry there unfortunately.

Sorry I thought you were talking about the half-life ports.

I played the original "Luke Ross" Cyberpunk port but it was pretty horrible due to his mediocre alternate eye rendering and the lack of controller support.

I saw the new mod (dariulone?) but I didn't yet install it because it comes with a huge list of dependencies of other mods to install and I haven't had time for all that. I'm kinda hoping he makes a quick installer that packages everything :)

wolvoleo··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Yes I've already played those ports on my quest 3 (streaming). That was fun!

But they were talking about playing on a virtual 2D screen which I have no interest in

wolvoleo··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Honestly as a VR enthusiast this is the least interesting feature by far.

If I want to game with glasses I'll just use my $200 xreal airs. I do sometimes on holidays using Samsung DeX and a gamepad, and GeForce now. Works well, I played through half of Cyberpunk that way.

wolvoleo··on Donald Trump rejects calls from tech bosses for AI slowdown
I don't understand what this has to do with the point I'm making.

I'm not saying that rich people are smart or that being smart makes you rich. I think it's more a focus on money at all costs.

However I'm saying I'm surprised they haven't used that wealth to make smart people figure out a way to live forever for themselves. Or maybe they did try but failed.

It won't come to us normal people, I'm very sure of that.

wolvoleo··on Donald Trump rejects calls from tech bosses for AI slowdown
No but being rich does mean one can hire a lot of intelligent people to figure it out for them. A LOT.

The thing is, if someone figures out something against aging, you can bet it will be made incredibly expensive. After all, the planet will have a massive problem if everyone starts using it. Basically every problem we have on this world would increase massively, from global warming to housing, energy, pollution, traffic.

So it will be limited to the few and in our society that means the most wealthy (not that I agree with that but it is what it is).

So they would probably keep it secret and expensive, but they'd also be very motivated to invest in it because it would be insanely profitable. And they would benefit personally by living longer obviously. I'm sure those people with hundreds of billions in the bank think about these things.

I'm pretty sure someone like Elon Musk would eventually invest in that. Right now he's probably a bit too young to worry about ageing. But he's someone who believes in technology shaping the future of humanity. And he's got the money to try.

wolvoleo··on Registration without a phone number on Signal will use zero-knowledge proofs
The most ubiquitous, absolutely. Their data collection is unparalleled. They're on almost every website, app, they have fingers into payment and browsers and mobile OSes.

In terms of what they do with big data there's more evil parties like Palantir but data abuse starts with collecting it, and I would object to it even if Google promised to only use it for good. For me my privacy is already violated when my data is collected, not just when it's abused. And I do consider Google's use of that data abusive, just not in the worst ways.

wolvoleo··on Donald Trump rejects calls from tech bosses for AI slowdown
I wouldn't want industry leaders to decide laws, that's what democracy is for. It's normal that they can voice their points of view, and it's normal for a government to decide otherwise for good reasons.

Having said that, these are not normal times of course. Normally a government would have its own subject matter experts. However with Trump as a self-proclaimed expert on everything this isn't really working.

In this particular case his point 'China would use the time to catch up' isn't really a bad one because that is exactly what would happen. I'm just not really sure that that would be such a bad thing. Right now China is making a lot of open models that are good for everyone, while American models are mostly closed for rent-seeking purposes. Also, I don't see science as a race. But more as a collaboration.

Note: I'm not a Trump fan at all, just to make that clear. But I wouldn't dismiss a point just because he made it. And I'm not a fan of the Big-AI leaders either to be honest.
