wohfab··on News Minimalist – Only significant news
Obviously it doesn't strike you as odd as an American.

I'd say, .com is just the default. If you go location/topic specific, you go with another TLD.

To the 130 million (domainnamestat.com) domains, registered in the US, there are like 500 million domains, registered somewhere else. I couldn't find any numbers for how many of those are .com and how many aren't, but you cannot just ignore those. Just because most domains registered in the US are .com domains, doesn't make .com a US domain. That's a really egocentric point of view.

wohfab··on Show HN: Unknown Pleasures, a tiny web experiment with WebGL
So fun, didn't even know, they also made the Kutt.it URL shortener, that I am using for quite a while already. Small world...
wohfab··on Keybase.pub Shutting Down on March 1 2023
Keybase isn't going anywhere. It's just the file system keybase.pub
wohfab··on Plant-based meat is turning out to be a flop
Then you didn't try a good one, yet. I can say the same about a steak that's cooked "wrong" or a "burger" where nobody ever knows what actually is in there because for all you know it can be hundreds of dead animals in a single burger patty.

It tastes terrible, if you cannot cook. That is true for every single meal.

wohfab··on Pirate Weather: A free, open, and documented forecast API
Confirmed. Me, too.
wohfab··on Password Requirements: Myths and Madness
Sky (Germany) has 4 digit codes for their accounts. Ridiculous.
wohfab··on Spotifyd
Didn't test myself, but a quick google search reveals: https://soundiiz.com/tutorial/export-spotify-to-text
wohfab··on JSON Hero: Enhanced JSON structure visualization
This reminds me of an "Online HTML Minifier" website that analyzed the text and included affiliate links for random words within the text.

And they operated for years, when someone noticed links on their own website, they haven't added themselves and tried to figure out, how it happened, because nobody else had access to the website.

(Will update with a link, if I find it.)

wohfab··on Obsidian 1.0 – Personal knowledge base app
(Advanced) note taking, often used in the Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) & "Second Brain" community.
wohfab··on When going somewhere does a thing: on links and buttons
Using it for quite a while now. It is amazing. Even 'just' using the multi device view is mostly enough for me, but it goes a lot further with accessibility audit functions and such.

I definitely recommend trying it out.

wohfab··on An odd discovery on Spotify
I recently discovered YouTube videos that use a crappy spoken intro with a real human face in it and then proceed to display scraped StackOverflow answers as text with music in the background. the intro/outro is always the same as it is very generic.

Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HElG3iLn6Kk

wohfab··on World's oldest tree still growing near the Norwegian-Swedish border
Isn't the "oldest tree" always "still growing", until it doesn't grow? Then it's dead? Then it's not the oldest tree anymore?
wohfab··on Are Magic Links Outdated?
I mean, the magic link could be an addition to the "forgot password" screen, then? As in "reset password or login via magic link"?
wohfab··on Today I Deleted Notion
Instead of treating a document as one, every part of the document is a separate block. Every paragraph can be a block, every table is a block, every image can be a block. This makes referencing to specific information very easy, as every block can be referenced, displayed somewhere else, a.s.o.
wohfab··on Cheat sheet for if I'm gone
That also means higher risk of failure, doesn't it? If just one of the N people isn't able to attend for whatever reason, your stuff is gone for good. If I give the key to my spouse, they can just use it. If I give it to 5 people, chance, one of those is unreachable when I'm gone, is 5 times as high.
wohfab··on Find Wikipedia photos needed near you
But it's extremely little additional work, though.

The application is already able to find articles around a given address. The only thing that would be changed, is that you enter the address by hand instead of letting the browser locate you. This can be easily done in a day

wohfab··on I Trained My TikTok
I'd only wish, blocking and muting would be as easy as it is with twitter. Seeing crap live streams on your For You Page and having to find your way onto their profile page and it's like 8 clicks before you are back on your FYP.
wohfab··on Apple fined $1000 for not including charger
That is utter horsecrap. Ever heard of "batteries not included"?
wohfab··on Killed by Microsoft
So, every time a company increases prices, it "kills" something? By that logic, every company kills nearly everything, every time.
wohfab··on First Raspberry Pi Powered Ultra-Small Form Factor Rugged for Defense, Aerospace
Can we have the important part of "Mission Computer" in the title as well?
wohfab··on Google Domains is out of beta
But that can happen with every domain registrar, can't it?
wohfab··on Google Domains is out of beta
Sure, if a specific feature of Classic Google Sites was used and is now different or was not merged to the New Google Sites, it's a matter of opinion.

But that's what I mean. I cannot account for all of the services you mentioned, but there is still Google Sites, there is still Google Workspace as the G Suite successor, many of the My Maps features were just moved to Google Maps. The hardware line of phones is now Pixel instead of Nexus. Obviously it evolved from Nexus and there is stuff from Nexus that didn't make it to Pixel. But if this is what we're talking about, every single tech company on the planet is "killing" stuff every time they release a new version of soft- or hardware.

Those are just examples off the top of my head. There are things that Google "killed" & I loved Google+, I used the URL shortener regularly, and the end of Google Reader was a tragedy (probably the one Google product I personally miss), but this huge list isn't a very fair depiction, IMHO.

wohfab··on Google Domains is out of beta
Of the stuff, more than a very specific niche group of people can use and then actually used? Yes.
wohfab··on Google Domains is out of beta
Oh man, this comments...

The number of products, Google actually "killed" and not just rename, merge into another product, or develop further under a new name, is quite low. And frankly, most people, complaining about product lifetime, probably never even used any of those products at all.

Yes, killedbygoogle.com is fun, but come on...

wohfab··on Google Domains is out of beta
Do you know GoDaddy?
wohfab··on Ask HN: Google SSO or Password Manager?
I've heard good stuff from ProtonMail. It also adds a lot of security to email, if this of concern to you.
wohfab··on Tailwind CSS v3.0
It was "popular", because there was no good option to do stuff. Now there are plenty options. Tables are for tabular content. Using it anywhere else is a spit in the face of accessibility.
wohfab··on My friends Instagram was hacked and deep-fake videos posted in less than 6 hours
Yeah, true. I do 64 on default, except the service doesn't allow it, then I'll do the max allowed characters.
wohfab··on I moderate /r/kafka; people mistake it as a subreddit about kafka the product
Oh yeah. Try to find stuff about project matter. Out of luck? Well, thank god you can always search for thread.

The biggest tech companies on earth get their heads together and come up with those beautiful names. I mean, alphabet & meta are a thing...

wohfab··on Show HN: My wife is pregnant; naturally I made a baby-name app to prepare
A way to "upload" your own name list would be an incredible feature. Whether it is a .csv or a plain .txt with one name per line.
