wnscooke··on What Was the Beast of Gévaudan?
Wasn’t it a lion, brought back from a safari?
wnscooke··on Standard Notes – A Simple and Private Notes App
Care to share the steps you took? It proved to be near impossible to set up several months ago for me and others.
wnscooke··on Stacks of Urns in Wuhan Prompt New Questions of Virus’s Toll
Rather than waiting for answers from HN, you can easily google literature which tackles this question, including libraries. Short answer - they do see it differently.
wnscooke··on LibraryThing Is Now Free to All
It is really too bad it doesn’t include the ability to read said catalogued books.

That said, I wonder the catalogue could be exportable to a web-based option like omega.org, which is self hosted.

wnscooke··on How I recorded an album on my own, in my room
The artists name is Mree, and it's her cover of Walking on a Dream by Empire of the Sun. It's worth the click, and now you know to what you'll be clicking.
wnscooke··on Not everyone has an internal monologue
What about this revelation ruined that guys day? Why did his previously-uncontested worldview about internal dialogues require it to be applied to everyone around them?

wnscooke··on Rediscovering the lost power of reading aloud
It is an aberration.
wnscooke··on Dad takes son to Mongolia to get him off his phone
The point is that using a device in this way guarantees a meltdown everytime it has to be taken away. And at the age where they can actually start managing their emotions and reactions, this approach remains a handicap for these poor kids.
wnscooke··on Merry Christmas HN
Merry Christmas!
wnscooke··on Monica: Open-source personal CRM

Sounds like the writer has confused flanerie with badaud, quoting a quote from a Wikipedia: “The simple flâneur is always in full possession of his individuality, whereas the individuality of the badaud disappears. It is absorbed by the outside world…which intoxicates him to the point where he forgets himself. Under the influence of the spectacle which presents itself to him, the badaud becomes an impersonal creature; he is no longer a human being, he is part of the public, of the crowd."[Victor Fournel, Ce qu'on voit dans les rues de Paris, (Paris, 1867), p. 270. See Shaya 2004.]
wnscooke··on New York City is a mall
How so? It has malls, but it isn’t a mall by any stretch.
wnscooke··on I Can Eat Glass
I once order 100 coffees at a fast food place in China. When the girl went wide-eyed and was looking around and past me (for the crowd I was presumably ordering for), I figured I mispronounced something. A few tries later I ordered my one cup of coffee. Yibai coffee vs yibei coffee.
wnscooke··on My startup is not attracting paying customers. Should I shut it down?
Could be because 2 seconds into loading, your crm.puretext.us sites crashes and tells me an error occurred. Maybe this is happening more often than you realize.
wnscooke··on Firefly III – Self-hosted financial manager
Maybe because it sounds curmudgeonly, without giving much thought to any possible answer. If had been made a Mac app I suppose the OP would say, “Why does this have to be a Mac app?”, or the inverse for a Windows app, more so if it was Linux only. Thinking about these makes it abundantly clear WHY it is a web app... so anyone can use it.
wnscooke··on Volcanoes on the Moon May Have Erupted During the Dinosaur Age (2014)
What is it about that link that you don’t like? I was expecting over the top rhetoric and sarcastic dismissal of opposing viewpoints. But it struck me as someone writing sincerely, attempting to tackle the questions as levelheaded as they could be.
wnscooke··on MITM on HTTPS traffic in Kazakhstan
But he actually could have been talking primarily about Kazakhs in Kazakhstan, so nothing wrong there.
wnscooke··on Ask HN: What do you do on an Android phone that cannot be done on an iPhone?
This may be posted already, but I love that wherever I put my finger in a wall of text, the cursor goes there. I don’t have to press and hold, the cursor doesn’t jump to the start or end of the word, the word isn’t selected... the cursor just goes where I pressed. The middle of the word, the letter after the first, the letter before the last. Awesome. I hate typing on my iPhone or iPad and have to edit, the stupid battle trying to get the cursor to go where I want it is soooooo troublesome. But on my asus tablet, my pixel, easy peasy.
wnscooke··on Superhuman
I still doubt _anyone_ really uses it because all the supposed users are over the top effervescent in its praise without saying anything about why, or what. No details. I actually did get an invite from a forum on Lowendtalk... followed the link, gave some info (no about an6 email accounts) and then I had to complete a questionnaire about my usage! Never had to do that for an app before, so I back out and pinged the ceo to remove me from their system. I don’t know. Seems off. Somehow.

After reading the article there is still a dearth of details other than saying users “experience joy”, and that it is fast. Nothing about what generates the joy, of what exactly is fast about it. Avoid!

wnscooke··on Cities Start to Question an American Ideal: A House with a Yard on Every Lot
In Ottawa I lived in a quadplex, one of several, all surrounding a common park. It was a nice idea but there were just enough inconsiderate people and disinterested parents to make a the park a filthy mess and, later in the day, not so safe to go to since a bunch of young people would hang out on the kids play structures and scare the little kids away. The parents of the teens did not care. Idiots wreck everything.
wnscooke··on The new Dropbox
Who called, and why were they angry (at you)?
wnscooke··on Welcome to Shanghai, the capital of the future
People don’t seem to understand this difference you highlight. They could try going to China and saying the same things publicly.... _then_ they’d realize how different the two places are.
wnscooke··on Show HN: I Built Darwin Mail as a Google Inbox Replacement

wnscooke··on World's tallest tropical tree discovered and climbed in Malaysian Borneo
“Tropical tree”, not claiming to be tallest amongst all trees.
wnscooke··on How Inuit parents teach kids to control their anger
I think it might be opposite, and combined. They have a set of stories, called legends in other First Nations cultures (in English); every knows them. If each parent made up their own story to put fear into their child, the child just has to compare the story they hard with a different story their friend heard and voila, the kids realize it’s all made up. This way, the older kids can reaffirm the story to the younger ones because they heard it too (although are at a point where they understand the point). These stories/legends are often told in a third person perspective too.

Religion... if you believe the tenets of your religion it most likely isn’t understood to be _just_ a made-up story (even if others think it is). As an example, all the Christians I personally know didn’t simply believe a story about some guy named Jesus and thus started living in fear of his judgement. They believe the bible as a historical record, and live in a way that Jesus taught, and in a way that brings glory to Jesus. No fear. In fact, they might get even say the bible helps with something like nlp since it is God who has “stepped back” and looked at human emotions, behaviours, etc. I guess that comparison falls short of how to deal with trauma-induced behaviour.

I wish I could personally meet a cultural Christian (someone who is Christian only because everyone else is), the kind that atheists or anthropologists or secularists point to as their own example of someone following a made-up story, and ask them why they believe it/align their lives to _just_ a story.
