wnscooke··on I no longer grade my students’ work, and I wish I had stopped sooner
I teach English but I rarely call myself The Teacher. I'm there to help them on their journey. I explain at the start of every class that their final grade (the uni currency) will rely more on the effort they put in than an actual note. The motivated ones love it, and I have seen this approach help the uncertain feel more confident when their effort is what is noticed, not a grade not lower language ability. Those students then start putting in more effort, and excel. There are still a number who just come, just sit, low effort, and this group is often equally divided into high level and low level language levels. It's not just the "bad" or "poor" students.

By the start of the second semester the class is functioning really well, with students really trying, confident regardless of actual level, participating. It's always so heartening to see former back row students moving up to the front, and the front row making room for them.

wnscooke··on Ask HN: What Happened to Svbtle?
Funny reading ppl criticizing the "promise". I decided to Google Svbtle as I recalled liking their default theme "awhile ago"... And there are results from over 10 years ago! I'd call that a pretty run in terms of promises and lifetimes.

Have you seen their demands? If Ukraine agrees, they get what they want - more land, won't get pounded by more fighting, etc. Seems like a crazy calculation but tit might be what they wanted. If Ukraine agrees, it also has the side effect of making Russia appear "reasonable" if they actually stop fighting.
wnscooke··on The writers who translated Goethe became some of the best writers in English
There was once a Kazakh translation of Faust, by Goethe, that I found in Almaty in the late 90's, made some photocopies, then lost those. How in the world could I ever find this book again (now that I'm not in Kazakhstan, much less Almaty)? Is there a Goethe repository somewhere?
wnscooke··on Ask HN: Quit caffeine? Before and after anecdotes
After one particularly stressful period of life I started having bloody stool (TMI, sorry). Bright red and scary looking. I went to the doctor, had lots of tests... no results. It wasn't cancer. Nothing odd physically. Diet was examined but nothing stood out. Then, it would stop. I didn't think much of it. But, over the next several years the bright red stool would start up again for a few days. I started paying attention. I narrowed it down to being overseas for a lengthy period of time, and then returning to North American and drinking a dark coffee from Starbucks. So, I would abstain for a few weeks, then have a dark, or a bold, black coffee. Within 12 hours, bright red stool. I would stop and it would go away. Since then (I'm talking a 12 year period) I've narrowed it down to almost any coffee, except Ethiopian, producing what I can only call an allergic reaction in my intestines. The regular tests have never shown an allergy though. Weird hey. But if I go drink a tall bold black brew right now, but tomorrow morning I can guarantee I'll have bloody red stool. I still drink 2-7 cups of Ethopian a days though. No problems.
wnscooke··on The Dubai Debt Trap
I’m curious about your stated reason for being there. Dubai gives Humanitarian visas to foreigners? To work in its own country (which then means it’s admitting it needs help)? I guess the host company is Dubaian? With all sincerity, I’m curious.

wnscooke··on Evidence for European presence in the Americas in AD 1021
There are some who think that if the First Nations weren’t “the first”, that diminishes modern day claims and grievances, making it easier for modern day Canada and the USA to ignore legitimate claims, and treat us as they’ve always wanted to treat us. So, this sort of research is important for many.

Yeah, I think it’s about time to stop using that phrase, “low on the totem pole”. Remarkably ignorant and insensitive. You already even used the word “hierarchical”… we get it.

wnscooke··on “People have asked if we'll adopt this system for WhatsApp. The answer is no.”
It probably stems from the well-known history of the start of the company. Who knows who started Dell, McDs, any number of SSD manufacturers, Lenovo, BlackBerry, etc.? I guess we all know about Microsoft and Bill Gates, but their story trajectory went the other way (more corporate). So, I imagine people say that because something Steve Jobs or Ives said or was recorded as saying resonated with them, and thus they share that deep belief.
wnscooke··on Who Speaks for Crazy Horse? (2019)
The best would be to learn the nation’s name. And then use that. In English I guess; in their own tongue would be cool.

It’s like if I want to talk about Germany, or Luxembourg, but only and always use the term European. But because most (?) know there are actual specific nations in Europe, we use those names. Sadly, that knowledge is still lacking in North America amongst the non-First Nations peoples.

wnscooke··on Soviet Venus Images (2004)
The answer was good, but just to clarify a touch more... The software inserts the space, not the French speaker. I teach in a university in France and repeatedly instructed students to stop typing that space until a few told me they literally can't unless they switch languages in Word.
wnscooke··on Canada: Hundreds of unmarked graves found at residential school
“treat current lands as sovereign nations that have an equal standing with the rest of the nation”

This isn’t as radical as you may think. It’s been a stated goal for a long time. I’m always surprised how the actual meaning of these words don’t seem to make any impact on Canadians. Perhaps phrased another way, such as, “When I have an Ojibway passport…” might catch people’s’ attention.

wnscooke··on Kazakhstan’s forest is the birthplace of modern apples
But even saying “the Kazak name ‘Almaty’” is still not correct because it gives the impression that the final sound is like an English -y, like happy. For those who know Cyrillic it is still inaccurate because the Cyrillic -y sounds like an English -oo. The only way to really show “the Kazak name” is to use Cyrillic, or their LtR script: Алматы, or الماتى. That final sound is more like an English -uh.

I had never heard of this, so I googled it. Very interesting. The drawing aspect is heavily pushed, but it looked like it also runs Windows 10 Pro... can you comment on how it runs as a computer? Could it be used to make videos, with say, DaVinci Reolve, or Openshot? Does O365 work on it, and web browsing, etc.? Thank you.

wnscooke··on Show HN: Beeper – All Your Chats in One App
It’s cool, the tech behind it all, but I’m in the process of closing my WhatsApp account, so I don’t need a bridge. For some reason my initial reaction was joy that this could be a WhatsApp replacement, somehow. And at the moment, I like keeping my other chat apps in their own app window, for keeping track of what I’m doing In them. I could see myself accidentally responding to the wrong person if everything is in one app. So again, it’s cool what with the tech, and OS, but, as I think about it... am I really going to use it?

wnscooke··on The New York Public Library’s Last, Secret Apartments (2016)
In Seoul I watched Avatar at 3 am, and the theatre was almost full. When I came out the morning crowds were already on the the move. Another night, at 1am, I wandered by an eyeglass store and they whipped me up a new pair of glasses for me in 15 minutes. Truly incredible.
wnscooke··on Show HN: Lofimusic.app, an open source Background Music Progressive Web App
I do the same, but the reason, as I’ve thought about it, is that it is of course a song I like, with a nice groove, and when I press Repeat for hours, the effect is that whenever I have a momentary lull or break in my work, what I hear is a snippet of this music that I like, and I can groove with it for a second or a few minutes, it isn’t something new that will grab my attention away from my work. So it isn’t even background music because I’m not listening to it in the background. It is music to keep me on track when those brief lulls arrive (like waiting for something to compile, or upload, or render).

wnscooke··on How to not fear your death: An Epicurean perspective
Fearing death oft-times seems similar to the fear that accompanies any act which you’ve never done before. About to be married, going to finish school, going on a trip... fear is part of all of these experiences, at least until you’ve done it. But I think the fear is made worse because of the stories we’ve told, and heard, about it. Modern movies are a prime example where we can watch what might happen if we die and what we might miss, etc. The more tragic a story the greater the fear that that might overwhelm us. The poems, tales, and stories highlight the effects of death.

But in a similar vein, I find comfort in the more positive stories too, such as the ones about Jesus in the Bible. How death came as a result of sin, and how, for some reason, a sacrifice was required to pay the penalty of sin - something else had to die in your stead, like a pigeon or sheep. But of course, how could that really pay that price? No wonder sacrifices were needed regularly. That is until Jesus’ death - an eternal life could pay for an eternal death, for good and forever. All I need to do is believe in Jesus and share that payment. This is a good story, preferable to the ending of say, 300, or Gladiator, for me at least.

I’m not sure the eternal life to come will eventually be boring either. The story suggests we remain basically the same, and what has been true is that we grow. True, what interested me as a kid doesn’t hold the same power over me now, nor could I as a child really get into fonts or NLP or traveling! So I reckon that eternal life means eternally growing and developing. I can’t picture it, I’ve not lived it yet, there is some fear there, but overall it sounds pretty good.

wnscooke··on Xinjiang is prototype for fully totalitarian state: Taiwan minister
Not true. The Han were not being murdered by Uighurs regularly. And every housing development has a gate and guardhouse, almost always has been like that since the danwei days. What is true is that the Han have been scared into fearing the Uighur by twisted news reporting. And once they are scared, any action by a minority looks scary. It’s also true that Uighur have lashed out after horrible treatment at the hands of the incoming Han. It’s understandable but regrettable, especially when the news reports only the one side. And yet, there are plenty of good relationships between the two peoples, but we never hear about that either. There are people on the ground trying to overcome hatred.

wnscooke··on How Inuit parents teach kids to control their anger (2019)
This isn't "Native American", it is Inuit. I am actually not sure which Inuit, but it is unhelpful to use such a blanket designation as "native american". Using that term would be like reading a book about Irish dancing and then telling someone you read a book about "European dancing", or reading a French cook book and declaring your love for "European cuisine". One day the same awareness, knowledge, and respect afforded to the nations and people groups of Europe will be afforded to those on Turtle Island. Not using the label "native american" when the focus or topic is a specific nation is a good start.
