wmeredith··on Red Hat being phased out of existence?
They had $67 billion in revenue last year, which was up 7% from the previous year. Not exactly out of business.
wmeredith··on America.gov
Well, it says it cover info from 29,000 website. I'm not sure that list would be helpful. Which is the point of this.
wmeredith··on Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Chairman, Names Son to Replace Him
Oh it applies to him. He just doesn’t care.
wmeredith··on I turned off my algorithm for 24 hours. Is this how social media used to be?
This is not how social media used to be. Without the algorithm there is no social media. What the author is describing/experiencing is a social network. There's no editorial voice/algorithm deciding what to broadcast to your eyeballs. It's just people who you've opted into consuming their content.

Social Networks seem to be pretty great while social media tuned for maximum engagement (rage) is what's driving addiction and polarization.

wmeredith··on What will our economic future look like?
Seriously. Can AI build a web page I can read?
wmeredith··on AirPods 5
A manual operation wouldn't shock me at all. A friend used to work on Apple.com and as recently as 5 years ago the product pages were still hard coded. No CMS.
wmeredith··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
I am a volunteer coach in a rec soccer league for 6th graders. Bluetooth jamming could literally kill one of my diabetic (type 1) players during a game because of this scenario.
wmeredith··on Coordination Headwind: How Organizations Are Like Slime Molds
This is also a core tenant in Ender's game.
wmeredith··on US Government designates host of noblogs.org a "global terrorist"
No. Just because I am not against people golfing, does not making me a golfer.
wmeredith··on US Government designates host of noblogs.org a "global terrorist"
> one has long wondered what this government actually considers NOT to be terrorism

Anyone willing to line their pockets, it seems.

wmeredith··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
I'd also be curious about the provenance of that statement. Why would they buy all copies? What would be the purpose of scanning multiple copies?
wmeredith··on Claude Users Cancel Subscriptions, Citing Anthropic's New AI Watermark
"Anthropic said that heavy editing, paraphrasing, translating, or mixing Claude's output with other writing can make its watermark undetectable. Plus, finding a watermark doesn't prove Claude originally authored something, since even proofreading or translating with its AI can leave a mark."

This seems worthless.

wmeredith··on Show HN: I backtested my own stock site's signals and published what failed
This doesn't pass the smell test. On the home page they claim a consistent 1.28% return on 5 days of trading. This would mean you could make $1 into $67,000,000 in one year.

Tell me: if you figured out how to do that would you make a website about it or would you spend a year turning $1,000 into $67 billion?

wmeredith··on The ACLU Is Arming Lawyers to Expose State Surveillance Secrets
Good. Donate to the ACLU here: https://action.aclu.org/give/now

I've been a card carrying members for years.

wmeredith··on Most rewrites serve the engineer, not the business
Unemployed engineer: business is my problem.
wmeredith··on Military branches restore flu shot requirement after virus swept through base
I'll bite. The Covid vaccines were extremely effective. This information brought to us by a data leak of the report blocked by the US government...

"NEW YORK (AP) — A study on COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness has finally been published after being blocked from a government health journal.

The vaccine was found to be about 55% effective against COVID-19-associated hospitalizations, and reduced COVID-19-related trips to emergency departments and urgent care clinics by 50%, according to the study published Tuesday by JAMA Network Open."

wmeredith··on Ozempic and Wegovy linked to surprising drop in violent behavior
This is a known potential side-effect of these drugs. When I started them my doctor warned me about a possible lack of motivation. These drugs trigger your body's satiation mechanism (as I understand them–not a doctor) and that can apply to more things than just eating.
wmeredith··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Both teams I run use Cursor as their daily drivers. It's fantastic. I am annoyed with this acquisition.
wmeredith··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
"SpaceX told investors during the IPO process that it sees an addressable market for AI products worth $26 trillion, roughly equivalent to U.S. GDP."

This is unhinged.

wmeredith··on Entanglement Builds Space-Time. Now "Magic" Gives It Gravity
As all programmers know: naming things (abstracting ideas for human interpretation) is hard.
wmeredith··on Shopify outage [resolved]
If you're asking the question, most likely yes. If you have evidence of the problem being AI slop, no.
wmeredith··on Can the stockmarket swallow Anthropic, SpaceX and OpenAI?
Essentially, yes, as I understand it. Elon's "investment" of millions in the current administration is paying dollars on the penny.
wmeredith··on Three Ways to Get Paid (2018)
It's also broken for Safari (on Mac).
wmeredith··on When AI Crosses the Line: The Matplotlib Incident
It's the formality of the language. It sounds robotic.
wmeredith··on Private Equity Bought America's Essential Services
As a Missourian who is regular embarrassed by Senator Hawley, I must say that he brings the goods when he has the opportunity to grill an oligarch.
wmeredith··on Uber, Lyft drivers in Massachusetts form first US ride-share union
I think it's reasonable to request the person making the assertion to back it up. It's not on the audience to either only debunk or accept the assertion. It can just be rejected.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

wmeredith··on Ferrari Luce
It's a $600,000 car. I don't think they're widening access.
wmeredith··on The memory shortage is causing a repricing of consumer electronics
> most of the tech leadership has to play along

Many of them orchestrated the situation.

wmeredith··on Google changes its search box
That's a pretty sinister system when the dam builders are suing the work of those downstream to build their damn. What happens when everyone downstream has been starved to death?
wmeredith··on The US is winning the AI race where it matters most: commercialization
> If I start driving south from Seattle then I'll eventually reach Los Angeles. How long will it take me to drive to Honolulu?

I like this analogy, but I'll be replacing Honolulu with The Moon when I steal it in the future.
