wmboy··on Ask HN: Can I be compensated if i introduced a VC to a startup ?
Let's say a VC investor invests $500,000 into a startup, I don't think they'd be keen to know that $50,000 of it gets passed straight to you and doesn't go toward building the product.

Having said that, if it's an arrangement worked out with the VC beforehand, then it could possibly work.

If we're talking about acquisition rather than investment, then that's an entirely different matter of course.

wmboy··on Ask HN: Are you homeschooling your kids? Why?
Total agree with your second point, what scenario in life are we in where all the people we socialise with are our own exact age? If anything, homeschooled children become naturally better at socialising because they're forced to make friends with people of different ages (both younger and older).

Note: there are definitely some weirdo homeschooling families that would be an exception to this!

wmboy··on Ask HN: How do you pay remote employees in different countries?
OrbitRemit works well for the countries they support, they also periodically throw in free transfers if you use them regularly enough.

I think the most compelling argument surely, is that it's just more fun. You actually feel like you're driving, it makes it more of an active experience.

Recently sold a manual car I owned for about 12 years, upgraded to a newer car which is automatic (only because there was no option for manual). Man, I miss driving a manual!

wmboy··on Ask HN: Great startup B2B sales books (2017-)?
Spin Selling by Neil Rackham

It's not the 'latest techniques', but tried and true consultative selling (being a doctor, finding out what's wrong and figuring out a solution for your potential customer, rather than using sales tricks).

wmboy··on PepsiCo Is Acquiring SodaStream for $3.2B
"...because of their Israeli origin..." I realise why you've said this, but when you take a step back, surely you can see this kind of sentiment is bordering on anti-Semitism?
wmboy··on Ask HN: Has anyone switched from being a night owl to being a morning person?
What time do you usually go to sleep?
wmboy··on The Difficulty of Untraining Drug Dogs How to Smell Marijuana
Actually, you'd be keeping people in prison who you know have a disregard for the law, and decide for themselves what they think is okay. They are criminals, they broke the law at the time, and as such, are people that deserve to spend time in prison.

Of course, that's a very broad way to think of it. I'm sure for this particular topic there are lots of cases of outright discrimination which means people are serving sentences for marijuana-related laws that just aren't helpful to society at all (probably detrimental).

So, you may be right regarding this particular law, however, I think it is a very dangerous precedent to simply pardon anyone who committed a crime, for which that act is now legal.

If someone believes something that's currently illegal should be made legal, there are non-anarchist ways to deal with it than simply disregarding authority and committing a crime.

wmboy··on Ask HN: A now shutdown startup open sourced their app here, I cant find it
Was it Staffjoy? https://github.com/Staffjoy/suite
wmboy··on Ask HN: How do you pay your remote workers located in various countries?
OrbitRemit works very well for us
wmboy··on Learning Coding After 40 and Leaving the 9 to 5 Job
I think it's more the lifestyle that coding can lead to, right? e.g. if coding leads to a lifestyle of poor exercise, sleep quality and diet, or a combination of all of those, then that can obviously lead to conditions you've mentioned above.

(note – not trying to diagnose your symptoms, just responding to your comment about coding being physically tolling!)

wmboy··on Ask HN: You're on bathroom break, what productive phone app do you use?
Pocket or Kindle
wmboy··on Ask HN: Is Anyone Living “The 4-Hour Work Week”?
By definition, science can test and prove natural phenomena by identifying laws of physic etc.

Science is useless in testing or proving supernatural phenomena but that doesn't necessarily mean it can't exist.

wmboy··on Ask HN: Is Anyone Living “The 4-Hour Work Week”?
Really? That's the business you've automated??

Care to share some more details on the process?

Aghh, this is what it feels like to have a migraine with aura, except that with a migraine your vision looks like this no matter what you're looking at.
wmboy··on Ask HN: What is your favorite example of a bootstrapped online business?
I'm pretty sure Mailchimp is 100% bootstrapped, which is an impressive achievement for a freemium offering.
wmboy··on How the Anti-Vaxxers Are Winning
Sorry I missed the 'later in life' in your original comment. Either way, I'm pretty sure the author of this article didn't have that condition in mind when he penned the sentence.
wmboy··on How the Anti-Vaxxers Are Winning
When that happens, it's most likely because that person has a weak immune system, correct? So what evidence do we have to say that person wouldn't have died from the next disease to come along (e.g. diarrhoea or simply catching a cold and dying from pneumonia?).

Just a question... kind of playing the devil's advocate, but I think it's usually ignored by most people when talking about vaccination.

wmboy··on How the Anti-Vaxxers Are Winning
It's extremely low likelihood of death compared to other more lethal diseases. I'm pretty sure AIDS, leukemia or malaria are more lethal to children than measles is.

And as far as "the leading cause of death", diarrhoea or pneumonia are arguably the biggest cause of deaths in children.

wmboy··on How the Anti-Vaxxers Are Winning
Exactly...correlation does not imply causation. Better sanitation, access to clean water, access to better medication and healthcare could also be related
wmboy··on How the Anti-Vaxxers Are Winning
Over the years improvements such as clean water, sanitation, medicine, access to healthcare etc have also improved.

The 2.6 million deaths per year were mostly from Africa right? Does that mean child mortality rates have improved that much?

I'm not saying that measles isn't a killer disease, but how does it compare to malaria for instance?

wmboy··on How the Anti-Vaxxers Are Winning
"Measles is one of the most contagious and most lethal of all human diseases."

Okay, I'm not a scientist, but I'm pretty sure that sentence is not accurate.

The percentage of people that die from measles is extremely low, and it's hard to tell if it's the disease that causes it, or simply the fact that the person was already very weak (and therefore would have died from another sickness such as complications of a cold).

> Some perfectly fertile couples try for years before successfully conceiving.

If both partners are young and healthy then they should have a bun in the oven within 4 months, otherwise something is abnormally wrong.

wmboy··on Ask HN: Most overhyped technology of 2016?
Not even for virtual meetings for companies that have a lot of remote staff?

Edit: or actually, a better use case...how about a quadriplegic that can no longer walk or move around easily?

wmboy··on Ask HN: Anyone else *still* having no email deliver with SendGrid?
You can contact them and ask them to move your account to a different IP address group, after doing that your email should start sending in a few mins (if it doesn't contact them again, or just do this while on live chat).

You'll want to do this real soon as the emails won't be sent at all after 72 hours...

Personally, I'll be moving to Mailgun after this episode. A 48 hour wait for transactional emails from being delivered is ridiculous.

That user isn't trying to find nail polish to buy at that particular moment, a Google search indicates in-the-moment buying intent.
wmboy··on Ask HN: Most successful SaaS pricing structure you've found?
Nice and concise answer! Just wondering if you can give some reasoning behind this?

e.g. if approval is usually needed for purchases over $500, wouldn't they have to ask for approval if they're making a purchase that's essentially going to cost $4,788 out of the annual budget (if it's a $399/mo SaaS web app)?
