wmblaettler··on At Chobani, Now It’s Not Just the Yogurt That’s Rich
Chobani is in several global markets and has multiple large-scale plants. 80% of their workforce are plant floor workers. I know this as I helped build an enterprise social platform for them a few years ago with a partner agency. [1]

This is only one of many things that Volvo does to improve the safety of passengers and those outside of their vehicles. I have a 2010 Volvo that has a feature called City Safety [1], an automatic braking system that prevents low speed collisions in city environments, and BLIS which indicates the presence of a person or vehicle in your blind spot. They also have a new cyclist detection system that engages the brakes [3]. I think if drivers can be more aware of others, pedestrians and cyclists, in combination with smarter vehicles that assist drivers in accident avoidance, it's a win-win.

wmblaettler··on Facebook's Engineering Director Is Headed to the White House
The title reads as though he was the single Engineering Director of Facebook ("Facebook's Engineering Director"). But a quick look on LinkedIn shows there are dozens of Engineering Directors at Facebook, which the article confirms - "one of Facebook's engineering directors".

Might want to change the title to match the article's.

(Not to diminish in any way his achievements at Facebook or otherwise.)

wmblaettler··on NHL partners with GoPro to deliver fans unique perspectives of the game
Correction: It should read "Contour" above. I am in the camp that believes the form factor is superior over the GoPro's box shape. Link: http://contour.com/

wmblaettler··on Show HN: Open-Source, Free, Agile Project Management Tool
First off, really slick interface and seemingly very full featured beta!

I am a little confused on the Scrum Sprint Taskboard vs Kanban board. We use a combination of the two with a Kanban board being the Sprint backlog/board. It seems there is no easy way to move cards when viewing the Sprint Taskboard and when enabling the Kanban module in the project, yes the Kanban board is usable for the tasks/stories but the columns in the two are not in sync. Maybe we're doing it wrong, but how should a team move the stories through to done during a sprint?

Maybe the title should read: Ph.D. with 2 years exp can earn $200,000-$300,000 a year in the data science field.

There is quite a lot of school (time, money, work, ability) behind getting a doctorate. It's not like just anyone with a B.S. and a couple years experience is getting these jobs.

You probably already know this, but your site is down.
wmblaettler··on Radio Shack tries to find its way in a post Apple world
I've said this for years, that Radio Shack needs to return to it's DIY roots or it will die off for good. With the huge maker movement happening it's great to see that they are embracing this.

I recently stopped in to look at the Arduino kits they have. I've not pulled the trigger on ordering online, but it's great that I can stop in there and look around and perhaps buy one on a whim.

To take it another step further they should offer 3D printing services like a 1 hour photo service does, send your specs, pick up your printed parts shortly thereafter.

I thought of the very same idea, but never even built it, I still think it would be cool. The main problem is that you have to have enough people on the network to make it useful.

wmblaettler··on Google’s Search Results Ditch Underlined Links, Increase Font Size
I have noticed this for the past few weeks. I guess I am in their test group. It's definitely a step backward from the previous version. At first I thought it was a change to the spacing. It's hard to really see the delineation between results, it all just merges together. It makes it harder to scan the results for the desired one.
wmblaettler··on 2048
Here's a random key press loop: function press(key) { var eventObj = document.createEvent("Events"); eventObj.initEvent("keydown", true, true); eventObj.which = key; document.dispatchEvent(eventObj); } for (y=0; y<=1000; y++) { press(Math.floor(Math.random() * 4) + 37); }
wmblaettler··on My Mind: A new web-based mind map editor

wmblaettler··on Snowden granted 1-year asylum in Russia, leaves airport
The circumstances around a car crash are most certainly not voluntary or by choice. Negligence by other drivers (alcohol, distraction, and other factors) cause deaths to even pedestrians and bicyclists. One could argue that the victims of terrorist attacks are by choice - by choosing to work in a densely populated area or to send a child to school instead of alternative education. I think neither car crashes victims (in accidents caused by others) nor terrorism victims are "by choice". They are victims of circumstance.
wmblaettler··on San Francisco to L.A. in 30 Mins. With Proposed New Transportation System
There is much discussion over this NOT being an evacuated tube. If there is air in a closed loop tube, why not accelerate it as well? Thus providing a "tail wind" giving even greater speed over a friction-less vacuum - which is presumably more difficult to create. Though, I can't even imagine the technical difficulties of creating and containing a 4,000 mph wind speed.
wmblaettler··on A List of Useful Backend Architectures
It's at least a good jumping off point to read more about how to use the materials to build the type of thing you want. I haven't even heard of many of them, but I work in the .NET world these days.

From Websense's site: Potentially Damaging Content - sites likely to contain little or no useful content (source: http://www.websense.com/content/urlcategories.aspx)

Could it be because your page is almost entirely a list of links? (not saying that's bad, personally)

You could try contacting Websense: What you can do if you feel a website has been incorrectly categorized. ... You can also suggest that Websense researchers reevaluate a categorization by e-mailing suggest@websense.com.

wmblaettler··on Business in a Box
This directly competes with Revel POS: http://revelsystems.com, though pricing isn't visible on their site, I would believe that Square's offering is also cheaper -- at least to get setup.
wmblaettler··on How Snapchat took over Yale
I am not one that checks my daughter's txts every night, but I do educate her that her actions can have farther reaching consequences than a young person might think at the time. Doesn't the false sense of privacy that this app creates give you concern that your daughter and her group of friends might overshare and create problems for themselves or others? The content does not go away, there is no way to prevent that. There have already been several workarounds (hacks) to persist the images being sent and I could think of a few more low tech solutions (second camera to take a photo of the snapchat screen is one that comes to mind).
wmblaettler··on Ford Releases An SDK For Their Cars
We just entered a GM Connected Car app in the ATT Hackathon in Las Vegas this past weekend. GM provides an Eclipse plugin that has the SDK and emulator. GM's API is Javascript-based and your app is HTML5/CSS and JS code.
wmblaettler··on Spider That Builds Its Own Spider Decoys Discovered
Could this decoy be used in the mating ritual to attract females rather than something to do with predators? From my limited reading, many spiders have rather elaborate mating rituals. Also with females being larger and usually killing the smaller male spiders, having a decoy to distract the female might allow the spider to stay alive longer and mate with more female spiders.
wmblaettler··on Letterpress by Loren Brichter of Atebits
I am sure it uses a standard dictionary such as SOWPODS, which excludes proper nouns among other things.
wmblaettler··on Some advice from Jeff Bezos
Consistent opinions are a good thing as long as unbiased, informed data continues to support that choice. One must know, though, that it's not infallible, but it's good enough, given the information provided.

Consistency is good. Blind devotion is bad.

wmblaettler··on Jon Stewart: Lower entrepreneurial risk
Well put. My thoughts were similar that if the safety net were to allow for excessively risky behavior (as in unsustainable, non-profitable, or predatory business schemes) with repeated failure and limited negative side effects, it could be a net drain on the overall economy.
wmblaettler··on Hidden Gem of iOS6: File Uploads in Mobile Safari
It's about time!
wmblaettler··on The XX shared their new album with only 1 fan to see how it goes viral.
The concept is very cool, but I find the UI lacking. I'd expect to see a cumulative expansion from patient zero, with a more continuous timeline. This appears to show the current visitors at that moment in time, which could allow for the viewer to see how visits fluctuate with time of day and surges grow larger over time, but it fails to even show this very well.

Of course it's easy to criticize, so props for the neat idea and decent execution.
