Anthropic wins a major fair use victory for AI — but it’s still in trouble for stealing books
wmat··on I created an open-source Hardware Hacking Wiki – with tutorials for beginners
You might find some useful information on elinux.org here: https://elinux.org/Interfacing_with_I2C_Devices

Additionally, search on the wiki of i2c.

wmat··on Old Vintage Computing Research: Dusting Off Dreamcast Linux
Excellent article, it really takes me back. You can still access the old linux-sh.org website on archive.org: https://web.archive.org/web/20080705101211/http://www.linux-...
wmat··on The Cloud Computer
What am I missing here? Hasn't SoftIron been building this exact thing for around 5 years? Heck, they design and manufacture all of the hardware as well.

wmat··on Ask HN: Best tools for self-authoring books in 2023?
I'd recommend AsciiDoctor. It provides a syntax that's very markdown-like. Store your book as src in Git somewhere and move seamlessly between Fedora and your Mac. There's a nice VSCode AsciiDoctor plugin and an extremely helpful community. And it outputs PDF, DocBook, epub, and HTML.
wmat··on Ask HN: Where are you looking for remote jobs?
I just learned of this site today, not sure if it's any good but it's specific to remote:

https://developers.expertremote.io/

wmat··on I wish Asciidoc was more popular
I really like asciidocs support for diagramming via the asciidoctor-diagram extension. It's supports lots of unique and useful diagramming formats, such as graphviz, ditaa, bytefield, etc.

wmat··on The myth of the myth of the lone genius
“I don’t believe anything really revolutionary has ever been invented by a committee… i’m going to give you some advice that might be hard to take. That advice is: Work alone… not on the committee. Not on a team” — Steve Wozniak
wmat··on Ask HN: What are some books where the reader learns by building projects?
Internal Combustion Engines by Ganeson
wmat··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
Some of my favourite nerdy documentaries:

BBS: The Documentary https://youtu.be/nO5vjmDFZaI

The KGB, the Computer, and Me https://youtu.be/EcKxaq1FTac

8 Bit Generation: The Commodore Wars https://youtu.be/Jq_t-v0bDZ8

wmat··on PocketBeagle – A $25 open-source USB-key-fob computer
http://linuxgizmos.com/ is usually pretty good.
wmat··on How to Retire at 40
Dammit, I just turned 46.
wmat··on Ask HN: How does Google create their Google Developers tutorials on YouTube?
Yeah, I agree, I'd love to know the details as well.
wmat··on Ask HN: How does Google create their Google Developers tutorials on YouTube?
Don't know the details of Google's setup, but they're creating a screencast with a tablet. There are several ways to do that depending on your hardware, but if you search for 'creating screencast with tablet' you'll find several examples.
wmat··on The Weird Global Appeal of Heavy Metal
Or more specific to this article, the documentary Global Metal:

wmat··on What’s Next in Computing?
You can't spell "idiot" without "iot".
wmat··on I installed CoreOS on a 9-year-old MacBook
I have Debian on a 2001 G3 iBook. Works great.
wmat··on Why computer programmers need to stop calling themselves engineers already
I'm pretty sure all Engineers in Canada get to wear the iron ring, including Software Engineers.
wmat··on Is Psychology a Science?
The feedback is a worthwhile read: http://arachnoid.com/psychology/feedback1.html
wmat··on Forested Overpasses Allow Animals to Cross Safely Over Highways
Here's one that's been up for years on Hwy69 just south of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada: http://www.sudburyelk.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=a...
wmat··on Quick and dirty way to have OpenBSD running on Linode
True, but their customer service is bar none. Worth a few extra bucks.
wmat··on Quick and dirty way to have OpenBSD running on Linode
Why not just use http://www.geekisp.com which is an all BSD shop? I've been a satisfied customer for probably around 10 years now.
wmat··on Blog Little Things
Wow, did this post ever land at an opportune time for me. I just started writing a 'first' blog post about my Hugo static site generator setup and stopped half way through with the thought, "why would anyone care about this, it's trivial and almost condescending to tell people how to set up Hugo".

Perhaps I'll go finish that post now.

wmat··on What You Find While Cleaning Out the Office of a World-Class Researcher
I miss FatBrain. That was a good online technical book store.
wmat··on What You Find While Cleaning Out the Office of a World-Class Researcher
It's interesting how paralysed by <insert reason here> most people really are when it comes to pursuing whatever it is they want to pursue. And I count myself within that group; for now.
wmat··on What You Find While Cleaning Out the Office of a World-Class Researcher
I love this. It describes a reality that I think exists into the present day. Regardless of our passions, real life is always there, filling ashtrays and picture frames whether you want it to or not.
wmat··on How One Couple Climbed Out of Debt and Became Millionaires in Their 30s
None of those things you list are credit based. A credit rating is determined by your ability to repay debts, such as credit cards, mortgages, etc. If you never have those, how can you have a credit rating.

wmat··on How One Couple Climbed Out of Debt and Became Millionaires in Their 30s
Good point, however, that should probably be stated in the article if that's the case.
wmat··on How One Couple Climbed Out of Debt and Became Millionaires in Their 30s
I have to admit I'm sceptical. An engineer and a pharmacist with a combined income of $85000 in 2006 seems extremely improbable. I know pharmacists that graduated in 1995 and walked into 100K+ jobs immediately. The low paid engineer I get ;). And how'd they pay off the 48K in student debt?
