wmat··on How One Couple Climbed Out of Debt and Became Millionaires in Their 30s
I have to admit I'm sceptical. An engineer and a pharmacist with a combined income of $85000 in 2006 seems extremely improbable. I know pharmacists that graduated in 1995 and walked into 100K+ jobs immediately. The low paid engineer I get ;). And how'd they pay off the 48K in student debt?
wmat··on Why Can’t Canada Win the Stanley Cup? (2013)
Interesting article. I think it underestimates the number of regions in Canada that could support an NHL franchise. For example, the Region of Waterloo, with a population of 500,000+. If Junior Hockey attendance can be used as a predictor of NHL attendance, consider that the Kitchener Rangers sell out their 7000 seat arena for every home game.
wmat··on The Machines Are Coming
Isn't it also just a matter of time before machines are writing the software?
wmat··on My OpenBSD Story
I loved this story. Anything similar out there?
wmat··on Web content fits better on a tall monitor
As a user of dual monitors, one vertical and one horizontal, I have to admit, there's nothing that makes me happier than full screen Vim on the vertical 23" monitor.
wmat··on Mozilla's low-overhead open source replay debugger
This looks really interesting. I hope it doesn't get buried in the Facebook buys Oculus news tsunami.

I can't wait to try rr out.

wmat··on Connected But Isolated: The Real Problem with Working Remotely
In the immortal word of Steve Wozniak:

“Artists work best alone. Work alone.”

Here's the longer version:

"Most inventors and engineers I’ve met are like me — they’re shy and they live in their heads. They’re almost like artists. In fact, the very best of them are artists. And artists work best alone — best outside of corporate environments, best where they can control an invention’s design without a lot of other people designing it for marketing or some other committee. I don’t believe anything really revolutionary has ever been invented by committee… I’m going to give you some advice that might be hard to take. That advice is: Work alone… Not on a committee. Not on a team.”

This has been out for awhile now. For a complete list of bootable OS images for the RaspberryPi see:

wmat··on Passive Income Hacker vs Startup Guy
This post reminds me of http://www.startupbook.net/, which I see patio11 whole heartily endorses. I'm a PIH wannabe, currently.

And similarly, http://www.micropreneur.com/ which is run by the author, I believe.

Here's the Furuno USA page, you can click on Find a Dealer from there.

I believe he fetches a satellite catalogue from Celestrak: http://celestrak.com/
wmat··on Edward Snowden's father writes open letter to NSA whistleblower in Moscow
"We encourage you to engage us in regular exchanges of ideas or thoughts....".

Surely, his father and his father's lawyer would consider that regular exchanges may be a little difficult at the moment.

wmat··on Doug Engelbart has died
Treasure that forever! And let it be a lesson in humility for us all.
wmat··on The book that inspired the birth of reddit
Not sure if this is verbatim, but one of my favourite quotes is a Carmack quote:

"If you want to set off and go develop some grand new thing, you don't need millions of dollars of cpitalization. you need enough pizza and Diet Coke to stick in your regrigerator, a cheap PC to work on and the dedication to go through with it."

Personally I love fixing things, it's like a a big puzzle.
wmat··on Hacker Monthly Presents: Hacker Bundle
Yeah, I suppose. It's all good. I'm just feeling somewhat surly this afternoon :/. I also realize I'm in no way the target market for this package.
wmat··on Hacker Monthly Presents: Hacker Bundle
I'm so uncool! I have no idea what any of the included services are. From what I can gather, it's SaaS stuff. If it had included a free monthly neck beard shave, I might have purchased. I'm sure this package is useful to some of you out there, but honestly, I don't know one person that I consider a "hacker" that this would appeal to. Nice marketing use of the term "hacker" though.

Excuse me, I have to get back to yelling at the teenagers to get off my lawn.

wmat··on Wintersmith – a flexible static site generator
No Octopress? Or do you consider it to Jekyl-like?
wmat··on Show HN: I learned to code to launch my new startup
I respectfully disagree. A title such as "Show HN: My Employee Rewards Site" would have been more applicable.

However, I don't begrudge the OP, as he's certainly gaining lots of useful feedback for his site.

I just can't help but feel slightly gamed ;)

wmat··on Show HN: I learned to code to launch my new startup
Given the title of this HN post, you should really be linking to your blog post, not the product itself. I clicked around your site a bit searching for your "learning to code" story to no avail.
wmat··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
I recently lost 30lbs by adopting a low-carb/real-food/paleo way of eating. As a result, I feel much better, sleep better, and have increased energy. My moods seem to be stabilizing and I feel more confident than ever. The decrease in weight has enabled me to exercise more comfortably, which in turn has resulted in an increased frequency of exercise, as it's now enjoyable. I can appreciate that the science behind the Paleo movement is not perfect, but the benefits I've realized from it far outweigh any questionable science employed to sell a few books by Loren Cordain along the way. It all basically boils down to application of the 80/20 rule to diet anyway.

wmat··on 97 Things Every Programmer Should Know
Great list! I particularly like #9 and #88.
wmat··on The If-by-whiskey fallacy
Because the answers to "if -by whiskey" you mean this, or you mean that, render the argument that alcohol should be banned as unsound. One can argue equally each side of the argument depending on the definition of alcohol they choose.
wmat··on The Rise and Fall of Languages in 2012
And for context:

2010:

wmat··on The Rise and Fall of Languages in 2012
Does anyone else see a lucrative consulting opportunity in declining languages? I know a LOT of people still writing COBOL for a very good living, so who's to say in 10-15 years you won't be re-factoring enterprise Java in the same way.

Of course, you might want to just kill yourself first.
