wlk··on Software engineers tell Glassdoor that Walmart pays more than Facebook
The article says the this data is self-reported: "Web site Glassdoor compiled self-reported salary data of more than 33,000 software engineers over the past year"
wlk··on Bypassing the HTC One lockscreen during restart
There are many errors in Android security, this is one that I have found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkdbMv0lNMc

(TLDR: just remove your SIM card when screen is off to unlock, works on Anrdoid 4.0.3 with Acer Iconia Tab A511)

Edit: I wonder if someone with tablet could try to reproduce that?

wlk··on OVH launches 2.99€/mo dedicated servers (2G RAM, 500G disk)
Just to add, I have found that really only options that are available are: * hardware reboot * os reinstalation

But there is a option called "netboot" which looks like it might be what you are looking for, but unfortunately I can't try it now on any of my servers.

wlk··on OVH launches 2.99€/mo dedicated servers (2G RAM, 500G disk)
I don't think it's there. Kimsufi is a low cost alternative to normal OVH services. I have few kimsufi servers for over year now and I never had to use remote console there.

This is for every kimsufi offer, by default kimsufi.com redirects me to http://www.kimsufi.com/fr/ but you have to add different coutry TLD to see prices in different currencies.
wlk··on Build your own private, encrypted, open-source Dropbox clone 2.0
I tried latest version few days ago, but found relatively hard to configure, also I didn't find anything about encryption in the settings, and all files were stored on disk unencrypted, also the need to have a web UI looks to me like a security risk.

Does anyone can recommend service like that but without frontend? I'm really only interesed in syncying files between few of my computers and mobile devices.

wlk··on Backdoor in the TP-Link routers
I just ordered this router knowing about this backdoor. I'm planning to install OpenWrt as soon as it arrives, which I recommend to anyone, as it was pointed in other comments.
wlk··on Ask HN: How do you manage shared company passwords?
It's usually the best to avoid shared passwords:) When possible we try to use either key-based authentication or create separate accounts with the same permissions.

But when we have to do something like that, we just send passwords to each other in a encrypted way (using keys or over ssh session with shared screen). And everyone has his or hers own way of saving passwords locally.

wlk··on Why You Should Start Using a VPN
Nice :) It would have been so much easier for me if I known this link since I configured my own server as VPN for me
wlk··on Google Now
Where/When can I get it ?
wlk··on Data-Intensive Text Processing with MapReduce
I especially liked chapters 1-3 which are very good introduction to MapReduce, those chapters focus on non-text processing related aspects of MapReduce. Also it is very short, and free.
wlk··on MIT Startup Bootcamp [Livestream]
Thanks, it seems that I was having video issues AND calculated timezone wrong.
wlk··on MIT Startup Bootcamp [Livestream]
Hasn't this event just ended, or am I calculating timezones wrong?
wlk··on Got Hacking? Git Hacking.
Maybe you can add gray text on input field saying 'enter your email' or something like that, that disappears when input field is clicked?
wlk··on Got Hacking? Git Hacking.
I actually spent a longer moment looking for signup form, then I started to think what to input there (email, login, or what).
wlk··on Poll: Do You Want to Use Chrome OS?
Quoting Steve Wozniak: "Never trust a computer you can't throw out a window". I apply it to cloud storage in general.
wlk··on Ask HN: Hacking Music
I recently listened a lot of "Grateful Dead" , it really kept me going.
wlk··on Ask HN: What do you listen to when you code?
Mostly classical music, definitely with no lyrics - this helps me to stay concentrated. But sometimes I prefer much stronger music: metal, rock.
