wkearney99··on Canvas online again as ShinyHunters threatens to leak schools’ data
This, way too many people think they know the law and build up a wall of thinking based on their erroneous understanding of it. They're often afraid to incur the perceived expense of consulting an actual expert.

The same kind of broken thinking exists across MANY other aspects of life. Turn up the radio in your car to avoid hearing the problem that would be 'easy' to fix now and instead ignore it until it turns into a considerably more expensive repair.

I find it's often the same people that make these kinds of misguided decisions that crow the loudest about "kill all the lawyers". Perhaps because of their fear of being called out for their ignorance.

wkearney99··on GLP-1 drugs: An economic disruptor? (2024)
Atkins-ish diet caused the same thing for me with a car accident back in the 90's. Sudden uptake of carbs with the alcohol resulted in lost memory of over 13 hours, a '68 De Ville convertible that got totaled and 2 months spent with a wired jaw.

wkearney99··on Vehicle brakes produce charged particles that may harm public health: study
While the sentiment on that is laudable, it's that kind of assuming that leads all kinds of idiots to jump to entirely ridiculous conclusions.

Some EVs also tie in the same detection devices used for adaptive cruise control to adjust regenerative braking. It can be configured to 'coast' in a manner similar to old-school automatic transmissions, but will apply regen braking when other vehicles are detected ahead. This lets me drive it sort of like a regular automatic when on the highway but get the added return of wattage when traffic gets heavier.

There's also one-pedal operation, akin to driving a golf cart. Where you feather the accelerator pedal to slow, and it will engage much more aggressive regen braking if you let off the accelerator pedal. Some folks like this. I do not. I still drive other ICE vehicles and find the transition between them too jarring for my liking.

wkearney99··on Twitter has suspended the accounts of a prominent Tesla and Elon Musk critic
Manbaby censors people telling just a wee bit too much of the truth about his antics.

So surprising.

wkearney99··on Population-based cohort study of oral contraceptive use and risk of depression
A 1% chance, from a self-reported study in the UK of basically just white women.

Can't wait to see how that gets twisted around.

wkearney99··on Tipping in the United States has gotten out of control
And thus the reason "people don't want to work any more" gets heard.

People do want to work, for decent wages, not exploitation and begging via 'tips'.

The 'President' is a temporary elected office, during which there is plenty of necessary access to all manner of secure materials. When no longer in that elected position there is zero need for continued access to those materials.

Likewise, those secure materials have some very specific handling protocols for access. ALL of which were completely ignored by Trump.

The notion of the 'deep state' is a boogeyman used to scare weak minds.

wkearney99··on Get Phones Out of Schools Now
Just an entirely bogus thought. Neatly allowing all of the blame to rest on the shooters not the rest of the toxic social culture around them. Sure, that society didn't 'pull the trigger' but they damned well sure primed the kids toward those crimes.
wkearney99··on Scientists Find That “Protein Hunger” Drives Overeating, Obesity

The point about 'protein dilution' is an additionally interesting effect.

wkearney99··on Linus Torvalds on “Woke” Attacks
Well, we have had to go to war because of the Nazis in the past, so it's not like there isn't precedent, sorry to say.
wkearney99··on 29 Percent of Gen Z Favors Government Installing Surveillance Cameras in Homes
Given Cato's right-wing tendencies it'd be more likely they deliberately crafted the survey to deliver this sort of fear-mongering idiocy. It feeds right into the interests of their base.

Emphasis on /seems/. It all adds up, small or not.
wkearney99··on US Has 12 or More Alien Spacecraft, Say Military and Intelligence Contractors

wkearney99··on Solar panels – an eco-disaster waiting to happen?
Always a good idea to get the jump on recycling before the volume piles up.

Sadly I'd imagine this would just be more fodder for the denialists to reject using alternatives to fossil fuels.

wkearney99··on Apple Is Breaking Its Own Rules with a New Headset
It would be sad for anyone to think it's really ever been about "the user". Oh, sure, the reality distortion field made it seem that way, but it really never was.

They care because no matter how small with travel and such these days there are potential risks if they're 'found' to be non-compliant. Simpler to say "no, we can't comply" than spend time/money/risk fighting about it later.

Not that I disagree with you on the 'it seems stupid' front. But that doesn't change the risk profile for the company.

Based upon a recently unsealed filing in Texas in the Fintiv vs Apple case Apple has now admitted to the court that it committed fraud on the court in denying for over three years that it had never signed NDA’s with Fintiv or its affiliates in 2011 – 13. Indeed they did.
