I find the problem interesting for its historically poor examples floating on the internet and their application socially beyond a math puzzle.
That’s my view and point in commenting.
What I was trying to get at is there are poor reproductions used to trick people that go around and must be a big part of the meme.
Don’t believe me, go search for memes presenting the problem. It’s been on the internet for decades at this point.
The setup is near always to send a poor rewrite then link you to a story of Marilyn von Savant when you get 50-50. It’s an age old internet troll.
I think this story in its entirety says a lot about ignoring the importance of good technical writing… and how people on the internet love tricking others to feel “right.”
Of the cited hate mail Savant received, I have to wonder how many were setup with poor writing on the topic.
- $200 in mandatory carpet cleaning fees, no you can’t use the rental at Wal-Mart you must provide a receipt from a licensed firm. The typical licensed firm is $300 just to show up.
- Forgot a bottle of hand soap under a kitchen sink? Well it’s $50 dollars per trash bag. Oh you forgot a bottle of hand soap in the other bathroom? Well we start a new bag for each room so that’s another $50!
Was there any dispute or exaggeration on our move out sheet? We don’t negotiate with you poors! You have 30 days to pay or we report it against your credit report!
Oh you wanted to litigate that $600 fraudulent fee? Guess how much an attorney is gonna cost ya!
Apparently agents typically recommend the seller wrap it up into their side to make the deal more smooth and appealing to the buyer such that we never noticed when we bought into a neighborhood. Of course you can imagine the feeling of paying a do nothing management firm you despise many thousands for the privilege of getting the hell out!
I’ve had a small-peanuts side-gig as a property manager for my in-laws LLC, and that’s the standard practice in the US. If they eliminate brokers they’ll just rebrand as a property manager and get paid differently.
You will run into confusing situations where a county law enforcement official might patrol on a reservation because there is overlap or nebulous boundaries with the blessing (cross deputizarion) from the tribal law enforcement. However some tribes defer more of their governance to a Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs.
For a largely autonomous example, the Cherokee in North Carolina are interesting. Largely funded by their casinos and now marijuana which is legal on their reservation but not the encompassing state of North Carolina. They have fairly strict rules around membership, such that a Cherokee that was shipped off to Oklahoma is not eligible for membership. Land ownership is based on tribal membership, not quite following standard American rules. It’s a fun deep dive to read up on their system.
I guess a politician is worth more than an Arab-American teenager?
I’ve been victim to several violent crimes in my city in the 2020-2022 timespan (multiple pistol brandishing in traffic, one shot out window, and a knife brandishing in a grocery store)
In the first instance I was asked if I wanted to file a report about an hour later after the man had long fled (I had only a partial plate and they couldn’t get a match based off that information.) I was told, really, no there’s not much that would come out of it but they would file if I asked they do. I thanked the officer for his time and let him know I wouldn’t bother burdening him with the paperwork.
I never bothered reporting the next several incidences.
The only report I know was filed was the knife wielding man threatening to kill me in front of my child at 5.00 PM on a Friday in a crowded grocery store. I waited 35 minutes for police to respond to the call for the sole fact that the man might be waiting in the parking lot and I didn’t intend on leaving without a police escort lest I have to shoot down a man in front of my child. Never requested a report there, but I know it was filed.
I found out because I was telling my barber about it a week later and he mentioned that story was in the local city paper’s police blotter.
I can’t say it’s particularly unique. I’ve had coworkers harassed in similar fashions, they never reported because they knew it was a waste of everyone’s time. The police officer that works security at our old church told me he had it happen once off-duty he just flashed his own pistol and badge and the fool fled.
He never filed for his own incident.
Why bother?
I had a less than stellar household, was punched several times in the head by a parent so I put them in a headlock to get them to calm down. Spent several months in juvenile detention because of my “assault.”
Later came to learn, after my useless public defender advised I plead guilty, that would have been legally considered self defense.
About a year later the same parent started slapping me in the face. I called the police this time but to my disappointment was informed slaps are legally acceptable but closed-fist strikes are not. So a punch or hammer fist would be child abuse and criminally punishable. For further clarification, belts, breadboards, the famous “switch,” are all legal so long as it’s not physically, permanently damaging.
As with most things human law, it’s up to interpretation and will vary by responding officer and such.
This was circa 2008 so we’re not talking “1950s America” here.
Similarly, Japan and Germany post Second World War.
For contrast, look at how well our De-Ba’athification policy went in Iraq, disenfranchising a largely uninvolved military trained, fighting aged male population for the crimes of few at the top of the pyramid.
For the life of me I don’t understand the fools intent on retrying a 150 year old conflict they no party to.
I worked in such an environment and that’s how it’s done. Demonstrate it to your team, set expectations, have conversations about what matters. Encourage improved processes.

Considering the history of the French Foreign Legion, I’m disinclined to believe in the best possible outcome here.
History has taught this lesson.
I had to call in on hold for two and a half hours last week to be told “We cannot provide estimates or averages for approval for your application.” When I asked if there was an upper limit on how much time I was told “We cannot provide estimates or averages for your application.” When I asked if, based on that fact, could this theoretically take forever or never be approved I was told “We cannot provide estimates or averages for your application.”
Never thought I’d say it but just give me a chat bot!
Now we have more brazen smash and grabs with big hauls, idiots with trash bags an calculators being posted on social media, and porch pirates for which we see countless Ring videos?
Some folks might not trust those authority figures and their advice. For those, doing wrong and discovering you don’t like it is a hard won life lesson.
Along a similar line, I’ve heard it say that if you consider yourself a peaceful person but are not actually capable of great violence, then are you actually peaceful or simply harmless? If you’re not capable of doing wrong perhaos you’re not good, simply neutral “robot” entity confined to your programming.
I hate not using it at work but rather Node all the while watching Typescript libraries reinvent the Spring wheel.
I’m asking because as a teenager I lived in motels and homeless with pill-mill turned heroin addict parents and my anecdotal experiences with the broader transient public suggest a downward spiral involving substances first.
