wishawa··on The known causes of electricity (2019)
This is wrong. Light CAN cause electricity. See the Photoelectric effect (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photoelectric_effect).
wishawa··on Differences between Moon’s near and far sides linked to colossal ancient impact
This comment sounds AI-generated. If you’re a real person can you explain the point you were trying to deliver and why you chose to write this way?
wishawa··on Are we running out of resources?
At the start a sigmoid does look like an exponential doesn’t it?
wishawa··on Plans for Gnome 43 and Beyond
Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t File Chooser in Nautilus mean the legendary no image preview meme would finally be fixed?
wishawa··on Python 3.11 in the Web Browser
Have you seen Skulpt [1]? It doesn’t do matplotlib (or most other library) but it’s pure JS.

wishawa··on Hooks Considered Harmful
I created a tiny library to make hooks out of classes a while ago. Just posted on Show HN after seeing this.

wishawa··on Show HN: Write React Hooks with Classes
Hi HN! Hooks Considered Harmful [0] is being discussed so I thought I should share this library I made.

Normally React hooks are written with functions but with this library you use classes instead. You have access to lifecycle methods such as `hookDidMount` and `hookDidUpdate`.

I hope people find this interesting. Whether or not it is a good design is something for y'all to debate!

wishawa··on Mozilla patches two use-after-free vulnerabilities (ab)used in the wild
I’m curious why the second bug is labeled critical. WebGPU is still disabled isn’t it?
wishawa··on Mozilla patches two use-after-free vulnerabilities (ab)used in the wild
Kiwi Browser is not FOSS. They have a skeleton GitHub repo with Chromium code. Their patches aren’t published.
wishawa··on Decompiled 2022 Beijing Olympics Apps
I’m using the [Expo SDK](https://expo.io) and it declares a whole bunch of permissions yet goes through review fine without any explanation.
wishawa··on Decompiled 2022 Beijing Olympics Apps
This is correct. And it is normal practice for not-truly-native apps (apps using React Native, Ionic, etc.). By declaring every permission in the manifest, they can add new features that would require those permissions without by just updating the javascript code over the air (no play store update / google play review needed).
wishawa··on It takes $420k per year to run Lichess
Tell us, this language 10x more efficient than Java, what is it?
wishawa··on It takes $420k per year to run Lichess
That is true when you’re playing in your browser. On the mobile app (at least the iOS version) you can request computer analysis for your game done on the server.
wishawa··on Apple’s Newest OLED Supplier
IIRC back in iPhone 6 days the CPU production was split between TSMC and Samsung. The TSMC ones were measurably better (performance, thermals, battery life), but the difference wasn’t very big, so most people didn’t care.
wishawa··on Toxicity Dataset
It’s only 500 entries. One could probably scrape more from controversial reddit comments. Good effort nonetheless.
wishawa··on Costly Airbus paint flaw goes wider than the Gulf
What is today’s date?
wishawa··on React 18 is now in beta
Concise and simple functional components are often desirable. But class components and OOP allow you to make components that are complex yet generic and reusable.

Example from real experience: I had an `InfinityScroller` functional component. The `loadMoreItems` prop signature was a function with ten arguments because different usages require different state data when deciding what to load.

I converted the component to class based. `loadMoreItems` became an abstract method. No more overly complicated type signature because I can just access and update `this.state`.

wishawa··on 1Hz Minecraft Redstone Computer
They could have used the main display to show the numbers but that would be too complicated, so they need a special display for numbers. The hardware behind that number display could thus be considered a form of GPU.
wishawa··on Most Covid-19 hospitalizations due to four conditions
Those four conditions increase hospitalization rate for other illnesses too. The question is if the correlation is stronger with COVID.
wishawa··on Insect fatalities at wind turbines as biodiversity sinks
They mention insect detritus impacting laminar airflow, so the collisions are at the blades.
wishawa··on Insect fatalities at wind turbines as biodiversity sinks
Up close, turbines generate lots of noise, unnatural air currents, and EM field. Seems like an ideal situation for natural selection.
wishawa··on Trust-Busting as the Unsexy Answer to Google and Facebook
I agree with your argument in the case of Google. It would be good if Android, Google Earth, etc., are broken off from the main Google.

But for Facebook I don’t see how it can be broken down. Instagram, Whatsapp, and Messenger, Facebook’s three big children, are not really separate lines of business from Facebook itself. This isn’t due to defects in anti-trust laws or their enforcements. Capitalism itself just isn’t made for the wide-reaching and feedback-loop-y industry that is social media.

wishawa··on Raya and the Promise of Private Social Media
You’re right. Even if they don’t use it these folks probably don’t even remember they have recurring subscription.

I don’t think what you’re saying you want in the second paragraph is quite like Raya. A small and exclusive platform would filter out a lot of noise, but it would also exclude a lot of people like-minded to you. What you described sounds like a LinkedIn with much more intelligent recommendation/matching algorithms.

wishawa··on Raya and the Promise of Private Social Media
What sort of monetization do you imagine? From my perspective, ads probably won’t work well because it would ruin the premium feel of the platform. Shady paid-for influences (such as making something appear up high in some listing without being labeled as an ad) might work, but if they’re caught the user base would not be happy.
wishawa··on Raya and the Promise of Private Social Media
> admission rate is in the single digits

> expects to receive its millionth application by the end of 2021

> subscription fee of $7.99 per month (now $9.99)

To still turn a profit after paying 40 staff members and all the costs of maintaining and developing an app, this thing would need at least 50% of its registered users to be active. I really doubt this is possible for a dating app. Curious what other revenue streams they might have.

wishawa··on Apple takes down Quran app in China
Why is it “Apple takes down Quran app in China” and not “Chinese Government takes down Quran app from Apple’s platform”? What else could Apple have done but comply? Does anyone really think Apple should decide for itself which law should or should not be followed? Big techs already have way too much power. Now we want them to have power over the (Chinese) law too?
wishawa··on Trust-Busting as the Unsexy Answer to Google and Facebook
Traditional anti-trust methods would only go so far with big techs because while monopolies in the past are driven by economies of scale (and lobbying and other illegal stuffs, of course), big techs’ monopolies are mainly driven by strong positive feedback loops (search results quality for Google and network effect for Facebook). If Google and Facebook were to play it 100% fair, I doubt they would be smaller than 75% of their current size.
wishawa··on A viable solution for Python concurrency
Maybe each thread could have a mapping storing the number of references held (in that thread) for each object? This way only the atomic refcount has to be in the object header. Also I don’t think there would be an owning thread at all with this idea, so no ID needed.
wishawa··on A viable solution for Python concurrency
I think yours is a much cleaner design. In the original plan, if the owning thread just set the special bit, but before that set is propagated, another thread drops the shared refcount to zero, the object would never be released, would it?

EDIT: never mind the question, I just read that the special bit is atomic.

wishawa··on Crystal arrangement results in more power from ferroelectric solar cells
That is true. The research is good. But the headline, the article itself, and especially this comment by the author

> Our apologies for not making this clear. The photovoltaic effect was increased by 1000 times compared to previous output achieved from cells made of ferroelectric crystals, not from prevailing solar cells made of silicon or other conventional materials.

misleadingly make it seem like they made 1000x progress from the current best.
