wiseleo··on 24/7 SICP 1986 lectures stream
It's on-demand on YouTube[1] and an excellent course that is still very much relevant with very high production quality circa 1986. What makes it special is who is teaching it, which is the original authors of SICP. The course thus completely complements their book and is in the same style. The courses from later years are also on YouTube, but they don't feel the same.

wiseleo··on ‘Kidults’ are the biggest driver of sales growth for the toy industry
Rationality goes out the window when you have disposable income and see something you want. At the same time, the overall selection of toys seems to have shrunk. Stores have limited shelf space and dedicated megastores are rare.

It's a different story online, but toy shopping is a sensory experience. :)

wiseleo··on S.F. police announce dozens of arrests in crackdown on retail theft
I actively avoid San Francisco, except perhaps Ocean Beach area, despite living in close proximity. That city lost its appeal.

Retail theft needs to be curtailed. We have the technology for this.

wiseleo··on The world’s biggest cultured meat factory is under construction in the U.S.
I tasted artificial chicken at Panda Express. It's pretty good.

Early adopting is fun. ;)

wiseleo··on Apple Music Sing
She'll love Smule. :)
wiseleo··on Apple launches Self Service Repair in Europe
For everyone who says "it's too hard" to repair tiny parts, it's not. It requires special tools and surgical hand precision, but the tooling is affordable. You can outfit a lab for less than $1000 non-recurring cost. We should have schematics and boardviews available because they _are_ in effect the product repair manual. We should have ability to order individual chips. Limiting repair to field-replaceable units is IBM's business model.

When I don't have schematics and boardviews, I have to spend time generating them in my head.

wiseleo··on Ask HN: Why are live interviews higher signal than public GitHub code in hiring?
Timing. You can take an eternity to produce commits for Github and intermediate work may not be shown.

A live scenario will force time constraints.

wiseleo··on Ask HN: What is a techpet peeve of yours that no one else mentions?
Making relatively common settings unable to be changed by administrators. For example, users cannot change the time zone in Brivo. Neither can administrators.

Not having a central place where the administrator can verify what the system thinks is the system time.

Reducing feature set when rolling out new backend that I didn't ask for.

wiseleo··on How does Windows decide whether your computer has full Internet access?
I use example.com :) Less typing.
wiseleo··on How does Windows decide whether your computer has full Internet access?
It's always fun to walk to a user's desktop and hit Win-G (Windows Xbox Game Bar)
wiseleo··on Przewodów village in Poland hit by two Russian missiles, two dead
The path to de-escalation is easy. All troops leave Ukraine's territory and all attacks cease.
wiseleo··on YouTube confirms that it has removed the “sort by oldest/newest” option
31 videos have been hidden out of 32 possible.
wiseleo··on New York could become first state with a ‘Right to Repair’ law
Good. We need to keep usable electronics out of landfills. A 10-cent capacitor fails and the entire device gets trashed. That's nonsense.
wiseleo··on The first rule of Microsoft Excel: Don’t tell anyone you’re good at it
I enjoy helping people with Excel. There's a lot of money to be made with it. :)
wiseleo··on Show HN: Wallpaper Does Not Exist
Some of them are very interesting, thank you. :)
wiseleo··on Best Buy, Home Depot Lock Up Goods to Fight Theft
Replacing physical items with high fidelity video and automating the picking process when the shopper clicks add-to-cart could be sold as an improved experience.

I'd add a physical add-to-cart button with real-time inventory and give shoppers a bracelet when they walk into the store. They can pair that bracelet with their phone. They can either add items digitally from their phone or browse the store and add them from item locations. Stores would transform into customer service/fulfillment locations where storing items on the floor is unnecessary.

wiseleo··on Outdated vs. Complete: In defense of apps that don’t need updates
This helps to drive iOS updates. My iPad 4 is locked to iOS 10.3, so I can't easily download newer releases of apps. I am aware of being able to "buy" an app on a newer device and then download the last compatible version on that iPad. This policy could impact that ability.
wiseleo··on Ask HN: Do you still buy physical tech books like “Learn Rust” or “Learn Go”?
I read them online. I read multiple books at a time to understand a concept from multiple perspectives.
wiseleo··on Ask HN: Is it better to be quick generalist or a slow specialist?
Specialization leads to higher pay. Being a generalist will keep you locked to roles where a generalist is useful. I have a very high breadth of skills with everything you can imagine from Cisco to Exchange servers, but my expertise is resurrecting dead equipment. I have the rare intersection of software engineering, reverse engineering (to bypass serial numbers for long unsupported software), and electronics repair skills.

So, if you want a machine on which your business runs resurrected, regardless of parts availability, you will come to me and pay several thousand dollars.

wiseleo··on The Reason Why Are Trucks Getting Bigger
That would have a devastating impact on existing vehicles, which just happen to be owned by voters. Consumers already decide what they want, if they can afford to. Many are locked into financing agreements for vehicles they can't afford.
wiseleo··on The Reason Why Are Trucks Getting Bigger
If you tow heavy trailers, you need the vehicle in front to be heavier than the towed object for stability. By the time you are buying 3/4 ton or a 1-ton vehicle, fuel consideration is secondary. When loaded, you are going to have terrible mileage anyway. I own a Ford Escape Hybrid commuter car, a 4.2L V6 F-150 with 8' bed for light truck duty, and a 7.5L V8 F-350 for heavy towing with a 12' box. I also have enough land to store all these vehicles and I bought them broken and cheap.

Regular cab pickups exist and they get reasonable mileage these days. You can get combined 22mpg in an F-150 2.7L v6. It's a bigger truck because it is designed to tow 5000lbs and carry 2000lbs in the bed in its smallest configuration. If you launch boats or operate on wet construction sites, you need 4x4. Why? Your rear wheels will be on a slippery boat ramp. If you don't have 4x4, your rear-wheel drive truck's front wheels are useless and your truck can become a submarine by sliding into water.

It is difficult to buy a new truck with an 8' bed that's not a full-size truck. You need to in general look for a fleet vehicle. However, vans exist. My Grand Caravan minivan converts into a cargo van and fits 4x8 with gate closed. It's dead at the moment and so I got an F-150 to tow it home and drive around until I fix it.

So, if you want an 8' bed in a pickup, you are getting a minimum of a 1/2 ton truck. If you don't need one that long, 6' beds are available on smaller trucks. Your other option is to trailer something since they have 3500lbs towing capacity. 6' bed is perfectly usable for 8' loads with a bed extender.

So, why can't you get an 8' bed in a smaller truck? They are prone to getting overloaded. There's the legend of the immortal Ford Ranger that work much harder than they should. 20 sheets of 3/4" plywood is 1200lbs and that will fit inside a truck bed. Unless you have that 1800-2000lbs capacity, you'll overload it. Now, consider the weight of drywall, cement etc... Anything related to 4x8' items can unintentionally overload a small truck's rated payload capacity relatively easily.

Do you need an off-road 4x4 3/4 ton truck, which are huge and tall, for city driving? You do not. I need my 1-ton truck for towing a car trailer weighing more than 5000lbs. However, it's only driven when when I have to tow something that heavy.

wiseleo··on Diablo Immortal player spends $100k, cant find anyone suitable to matchmake with
There's a current Chinese donghua "Rich Player" about this phenomenon. :) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7RWlrbEwKUNKvRA66Ert...

The protagonist spends Yuan 30 billion in a game. The game currency looks a lot like bitcoin and after the initial purchase no further purchases can be made. So, he controls the in-game premium currency market and owns the vast majority. That unlocks all kinds of shenanigans. The longer it goes on, the more he alters the game mechanics. Dungeon bosses recognize him as their master and he owns entire cities, for example.

wiseleo··on Ask HN: What can you realistically manufacture in your garage?
A machine shop with a lathe and a mill, especially CNC, can manufacture just about anything.

I personally refurbish electronics. It's nice and quiet.

wiseleo··on Dmitry Rogozin has been dismissed as director general of Roscosmos
Hmmm... I speak Russian as a native speaker. The speech honestly does not make sense. This is a fragment of a longer speech that is missing context unless you are tuned into local politics as of 2007.

He's talking about criminals joining the ranks of Russia's army and how he's unhappy about it. Go figure...

He's also upset that the world is not considering him and his people as people.

Deciphering the symbolic was more interesting. He kept his fist closed in the end, but others did not.

The Black/Yellow/White flag is a Russian flag from Tzar Alexander II. The Blue/Yellow/Red flag appears to be related to Germany.

What's amusing is that Russian March an anti-Putin organization. https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A0%D1%83%D1%81%D1%81%D0%BA... - use Google Translate to read this instead of the English version.

wiseleo··on Ukraine’s new rockets are wreaking havoc on Russia’s army
It wasn't a civil war. It was a war instigated by Russia with Russian troops on Ukraine's territory with some additional sympathetic local fighters. Where Russia occupies, mass rape and murder happen.
wiseleo··on BMW heated seats subscription costs $18 per month in South Korea
They are small light-weight pads.
wiseleo··on Ask HN: Examples of large acquisitions that did not ruin the acquired company?
Cisco's acquisitions. There's a book about them. The Crescendo switch acquisition was extremely successful and they became Catalyst switches.
wiseleo··on Assassin’s Creed Liberation delisted, unplayable even to owners starting Sept 1
What expensive equipment? It's a VM.
wiseleo··on Blackmail attempt left a Houston restaurant bombarded with 1-star reviews
This is a global problem. San Francisco has also been hit.
wiseleo··on No Refrigerant Left Behind
Not much to say. Pass the 608 (home hvac) or 609 (automotive). Buy the refrigerant at supplier. You can buy an expensive R134a refrigerant recycling system like the one I own for 609, but you can also use a less expensive refrigerant recovery system that's functionally a vacuum pump with built-in manifold gauges and a tank or just a vacuum pump, manifold gauges, and a recovery tank. Easy fixes are on YouTube. I am looking into setting up a refurbishment service for broken AC electronics. To me, it's just a motherboard and I can fix them with my soldering station.
