wirelesspotat··on What every software developer must know about Unicode in 2023
Yep, the website opens a websocket connection[0] and sends the mouse position every 1 second

wirelesspotat··on Deno by Example
What was the issue you encountered with private registries on Deno? Based on Deno's docs, it looks like they're supported[0]

wirelesspotat··on Automated Sentry Error Tracking
Just noticed this message when deploying my application:

> * For application error tracking, we're about to provision a Sentry Team Plan account for you with a year's worth of credits. By deploying this app, you agree to the Sentry Terms of Service: https://fly.io/legal/supplemental-terms

> Your Sentry project is ready. See details and next steps with: flyctl apps errors

Seems really odd to just sign me up to another company's services without any prompt or opt-in mechanism

wirelesspotat··on “Green smoothie cleanse” causing acute oxalate nephropathy
In the report's keywords it mentions spinach. How much spinach is ok vs too much?

Is this issue caused by consuming too much spinach or by consuming spinach in combination with specific foods found in green smoothies?

wirelesspotat··on Fresh 1.4 – Faster Page Loads, Layouts and More
A lot of Fresh's marketing & docs seems to focus on serverless - I guess because of Deno Deploy?

For example, Fresh "Deploy to production" docs[0] only cover deploying to Deno Deploy

wirelesspotat··on Fresh 1.4 – Faster Page Loads, Layouts and More
What's the recommended use case that Fresh is being built for? It would be useful to see some guidance about which types of projects would benefit from Fresh

And more importantly, what use cases are a bad fit for Fresh? When should devs pick Next.js / SvelteKit / Astro / etc instead of Fresh?

Hello! From your perspective, how does Neon compare with Planetscale's offering? (Beyond the core MySQL vs Postgres differences)

If someone has a bit of experience with both MySQL and Postgres and isn't attached to either, is there a differentiating factor between Neon and Planetscale offerings?

Or are they close enough that it's essentially a MySQL vs Postgres decision?

wirelesspotat··on PlanetScale Scaler Pro
Do you know specifics they're missing?

At a glance, their Data Processing Addendum[0] seems to address GDPR, along with country-specific regulations like Swiss DPA and UK GDPR

wirelesspotat··on Researchers find a potential biomarker for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
> BChEsa, measured in dried blood spots taken 2-3 days after birth, was lower in babies who subsequently died of SIDS compared to surviving controls and other Non-SIDS deaths. We conclude that a previously unidentified cholinergic deficit, identifiable by abnormal -BChEsa, is present at birth in SIDS babies and represents a measurable, specific vulnerability prior to their death.
wirelesspotat··on Regular blood donations can reduce “forever chemicals” in the bloodstream: study
The video in this comment provides some good examples for why the risks associated with a false positive can be pretty significant: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31126368
wirelesspotat··on Regular blood donations can reduce “forever chemicals” in the bloodstream: study
In the USA, there's Private MD Labs, ULTA Labs, and Synergistic Labs[0]. In the UK, there's Medichecks and Thriva. I expect there are similar options in other countries.

However, these general blood tests won't test for PFAS: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31125559

wirelesspotat··on Regular blood donations can reduce “forever chemicals” in the bloodstream: study
I don't like how "toxic forever chemicals in the bloodstream" is a normal thing

Veritasium has a great YouTube video about this: "The Man Who Accidentally Killed The Most People In History"[0]

wirelesspotat··on Regular blood donations can reduce “forever chemicals” in the bloodstream: study
Yeah, the article mentions recipients of the toxic blood. I wonder if there will be more research to identify any risks for recipients

> The logic in removing them is simple: PFAS work by binding to serum proteins in the blood; removing some of this blood, therefore, would lead to the reduction of forever chemicals in the bloodstream. As to the question of what happens to recipients of this blood: “Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances are ubiquitous, and no threshold has been identified that poses an increased risk to recipients of donated blood components.”

wirelesspotat··on Ask HN: Have you ever switched cloud?
I migrated a previous company's infrastructure from AWS to Fly.io

Our AWS bill was the main reason. It was far higher than it should have been for the traffic we were serving. Even after we'd halved our AWS bill (the original bills had been crazy), it was still kinda high

Fly was a pretty clear choice when we looked at the lower costs and ease of transitioning from single-region to multi-region infrastructure

I'd been nudging the CEO about doing a migration for about a year before we decided to make the move. When I found that I couldn't really get our AWS costs any lower and did a full cost estimate of Fly vs AWS, the wheels moved reasonably quickly

The CEO primarily cared about lowering our monthly costs and being able to do the migration reasonably quickly (~1 month)

> Package manager

> npm, Yarn 1 or 2 (yes, they're completely different), pnpm or Snowpack?

I thought Snowpack was a build tool[0]. Is it actually closer to package managers like npm, yarn, pnpm?

wirelesspotat··on Store SQLite in Cloudflare Durable Objects
Does anyone know if it's possible to use Litestream with SQLite running on Cloudflare Durable Objects?

I suppose you'd have to compile Litestream to WASM or have Litestream running on a different machine and reading SQLite from the Durable Object?

wirelesspotat··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
My current and previous company both use 1password. I use Bitwarden personally.

I like them both - 1password has better UX but I prefer supporting open source for personal use.

wirelesspotat··on All Bitcoin private keys are on this website
Soo what happens if you're incredibly lucky and stumble across the private key for an active wallet?

If you transfer the funds out, isn't that just theft? Is "guessing" a private key any different from guessing someone's bank details?

wirelesspotat··on Over ear wireless headphone recommendations for many hours of coding?
Voice passthrough would be really useful

My Sony WH-1000XM3s have the "ambient sound" option too. It's good for hearing voices, but it also pipes through background noises like fan noise

When I need a mix of noise cancelling and hearing, I usually just turn ANC off. The headphones' physical design already blocks out a lot of background noises without blocking out voices much

wirelesspotat··on Over ear wireless headphone recommendations for many hours of coding?
If you want an excellent wireless ANC experience for long periods of coding (or for travel or entertainment), I strongly recommend Sony's wireless noise cancelling headphones:

Sony WH-1000XM4 (or the slightly older WH-1000XM3)

Many of my friends and colleagues have bought them after my recommendation (my colleagues and I use the 16" MBP) and all have had a fantastic experience

The top alternative that I'm aware of is Bose's noise cancelling headphones but I haven't tried them myself

Edit: this is the video that sold me on the Sony headphones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bInJjmH31Hk
