winrid··on AI is making me dumb
I don't feel this way. I have just been tackling more and larger problems, I think? This week one of many things for example is switching a multi-master KV store for tracking views on individual objects to tiered hyperloglogs that periodically merge. I could do this without AI, but it would take me a week instead of a day.

I think, if you're not feeling challenged, you're probably just doing the same work but faster. You should try to tackle harder problems, too!

winrid··on Reverting the incremental GC in Python 3.14 and 3.15
The max pause time thing is a meme :) I have gotten multi second pause times with ZGC. It depends on what hardware you run it on.
winrid··on Reverting the incremental GC in Python 3.14 and 3.15
The main benefit of python to me is that while slow, it's predictable. I do think they're going to get a lot more resistance to adding JITs, moving GCs, etc. it will become java with a million knobs to tune. If people want a JIT'd python just use pypy, right?
winrid··on If AI writes your code, why use Python?
Right sorry, that's not in my wheelhouse so I didn't think of that. I should be more specific. For general backend / data processing/pipeline stuff, API servers ...
winrid··on If AI writes your code, why use Python?
Claude writes java pretty well, and faster than Rust. It's a great middle ground for some projects. I've switched back from Rust to Java for some things.

I don't know why you would use Python at all except for small iterative projects. If you hate java for some reason, there's Go...

winrid··on Running local models on an M4 with 24GB memory
I rebuilt the entire fastcomments moderation UI 2yrs ago with webstorm on my 16gb thinkpad. 64gb is nice but not needed. I wonder if every dev didn't use an M4 Pro if software wouldn't be so resource hungry...
winrid··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026)
Still building https://FastComments.com :) I'm planning on launching a desktop app for it soon with a combined forum. So you could have a community on something like discord, but all the chats are indexed and searchable through a web forum style interface as well. The desktop app is a native C++ app so no electron :)

I'm also working on launching https://watch.ly (network/fs sandbox with human in the loop for ai agents), mostly waiting for the entitlements from apple at this point...

oh and I launched https://dirtforever.net recently to keep Clubs going for Dirt Rally 2 without the EA servers. Learned about the egonet protocol and made a server.

winrid··on Cloudflare to cut about 20% of its workforce
lol does all of European tech companies combined even make more than what the EU brings in from taxing US companies yet?
winrid··on Cloudflare to cut about 20% of its workforce
Should companies be forced to retain talent of a certain age group? Should they be forced to retain less competent people? How do you expect this to work?
winrid··on Windows API is Successful Cross-Platform API (2024)
the other way around is kind of how libgdx games run on iOS :)
winrid··on Ghostty is leaving GitHub
Could just be the status page software itself. It looks like it uses https://github.com/louislam/redbean-node which is kind of cursed

winrid··on GPT-5.5
I'll be launching the game in a couple months so you can see it then :)

There are bugs, it doesn't work perfectly, but that's just part of testing and refinement at this point.

My initial prompt was just: "let's work on converting this java game to c++ using panda3d. you're a panda3d c++ expert. you will be the agent that owns the project, creating the plan, and the delegating each step to sub-agents that create each system in the correct order."

it created like 17 different tasks and sub agents and opus 4.7 orchestrated it. I did personally validate which rendering engine would be good for the project etc first.

winrid··on Habitual coffee intake shapes the microbiome, modifies physiology and cognition
The bean is already only like 2% caffeine lol so cheap decaf can definitely really be "half caf" even if they say that.
winrid··on GPT-5.5
Weird. I don't have this behavior, although I did with codex and 5.4 haha. I bet the providers are playing with settings underneath and different users are routed to different deployments, or they're secretly routing us to different models under load.
winrid··on GPT-5.5
what?
winrid··on GPT-5.5
Interesting, I just had opus convert a 35k loc java game to c++ overnight (root agent that orchestrated and delegated to sub agents) and woke up and it's done and works.

What plan are you on? I'm starting to wonder if they're dynamically adjusting reasoning based on plan or something.

winrid··on Isaac Asimov: The Last Question (1956)
My favorite Sci-Fi AI is probably in Larry Niven's World of Ptavvs, the "brain board". It's not covered in much depth but I like it because it's basically vibe coding GPT3.5 from 1966:

> He read, "Time to recharge battery:" followed by the spiral hieroglyph, the sign of infinity.

> Thud, said the brain. Kzanol read, "Re-estimate of trip time to Thrintun:" followed by a spiral.

At the brain board he typed: "Compute a course for any civilized planet, minimum trip time. Give trip time."

...

Thud! The screen said, "No solution."

Nonsense! The battery had a tremendous potential, even after a hyperspace jump it must still have enough energy to aim the ship at some civilized planet. Why would the brain...?

Then he understood. The ship had power, probably, to reach several worlds, but not to slow him down to the speed of any known world. Well, that was all right. In his stasis field Kzanol wouldn't care how hard he hit. He typed: "Do not consider decrease of velocity upon arrival. Plot course for any civilized planet. Minimize trip time."

The answer took only a few seconds. "Trip time to Awtprun 72 Thrintun years 100.48 days."

winrid··on Do you even need a database?
The security level is the same actually as the codemasters servers.
winrid··on Claude Code Routines
I tried to use 5.4 for something pretty straightforward - create scripts to automate navigating a game UI and capturing the network traffic. 5.4 was super frustrating, constantly stopping and waiting for feedback etc, even after telling it to never wait and just iterate/debug. I quit and switched to Opus 4.6 and it did much more of the work by itself.
winrid··on Do you even need a database?
EA is shutting down Clubs. That is the primary motivation here.

Sadly no solution for non-rooted consoles.

winrid··on Do you even need a database?
My recent project - a replacement for CodeMaster's RaceNet, runs on flat files! https://dirtforever.net/

Just have to use locks to be careful with writes.

I figured I'd migrate it to a database after maybe 10k users or so.

winrid··on Claude Code Routines
It's bad at long running tasks.
