windthrown··on ProtonMail logged IP address of French activist after order by Swiss authorities
The "request" came in the form of a legally binding order from the Swiss Federal Department of Justice.

They have stated that there was not a legal possiblity to challenge in this case after the Swiss DOJ made their determination.

You suggest "go to court" but there was apparently not a means to do so. Judges aren't private arbiters and don't hear random cases at the request of companies

windthrown··on Clarifications regarding arrest of climate activist
Your concerns are valid but I think you are downplaying this by characterizing it as "swiss police merely pass them to proton". Protonmail recieved a legally binding order from the Swiss Federal Department of Justice.

I'm not saying Swiss laws are infallible but this request was not simply "forwarded": "Swiss authorities will only approve requests which meet Swiss legal standards (the only law that matters is Swiss law)"

As they mentioned in the blog post, they do challenge many of these requests but it was not legally possible in this case.

windthrown··on Clarifications regarding arrest of climate activist
The "data" in this case was the user's IP address and time they logged in.

Other providers might be able to be compelled to provide much more explicit data such as email content or the user's identity.

windthrown··on GitHub.Dev is now available on any GitHub repo
I think the difference is that hitting "." as mentioned lets you browse in VSCode for free but does not launch an entire codespaces VM.
windthrown··on Ask HN: What are you using to replace shared iCloud Photos albums?
I similarly use Tresorit (https://tresorit.com/) and share photo albums but these are general cloud storage as opposed to being optimized for viewing photos in a browser.
windthrown··on Apple’s new abuse prevention system: an antritust/competition point of view
The Pinephone running something like Ubuntu Touch (UBports) or PostmarketOS is something to keep an eye on but it is still in heavy development and in my option not quite a reliable "daily driver" yet.
windthrown··on CalyxOS – De-Googled Android Alternative
I have the wifi pick, use it frequently and have been quite happy with it.

I got the impression when signing up that it was Sprint's terms that limited their ability to offer to other devices but they would if they could.

windthrown··on Purism is seeking investment from individuals
No this is not arbitrary, accredited investors have a specific set of requirements they need to meet in the US: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/a/accreditedinvestor.asp
windthrown··on Purism is seeking investment from individuals
> If Joe Sixpack buys in, and made a false claim, that would be on him/her

I doubt the SEC sees it that way. The core purpose of accredited investor requirements is to protect Joe Sixpack from opening themselves up to a bunch of liability.

windthrown··on StreetComplete: Easy to use editor of OpenStreetMap data
I prefer Organic Maps too, but it isn't incorrect to state that MapsMe "makes use of OSM Data".
windthrown··on StreetComplete: Easy to use editor of OpenStreetMap data
In addition to the wheelchair ramp example, there are a few navigation apps for people who are blind which use OSM data - crucially features like tactile paving and crosswalks with voice prompts:

windthrown··on El Salvador to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender
Call it "FUD" if you want but in this case Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt are all very much justified.
windthrown··on Reclaim Windows10
I use O&O ShutUp10 and it is much more approachable. Rather than immediately enabling and blocking settings, ShutUp10 gives you recommendations and you can reasearch individual settings you aren't sure of.
windthrown··on Chinese paddlefish, one of the world's largest fish, declared extinct
This is going to come off much snarkier than I mean it, but were rice and beans not available in Montana at that time? I am a big fan of seafood but there is a lot of "quality protein" middle ground between meat and mac and cheese.
windthrown··on The problem with reinforced concrete (2016)
I think that comment was asking about "Design-Build" projects which are becoming more and more common.
windthrown··on A teenager's guide to avoiding actual work
I think it is more common than you are expecting. The University of Connecticut has its own co-gen plant on campus. It has capacity to power the actual school facilities, not just research.

windthrown··on Why is the Gaza Strip blurry on Google Maps?
Playing the devil's advocate, if the US is willing to negotiate with both the Taliban and official Afghanistan government directly, why not Hamas and Israel?

(I am not trying to equate these groups; just compare the official vs force relationships)

windthrown··on Linux Foundation starts AgStack, an open-source agtech initiative
This was listed on the Project page:

"The AgStack Foundation will not engage in building software applications but will instead focus on the software infrastructure (tools, frameworks, and models) that will be needed to build, manage and run applications by the members and users"

windthrown··on California population declines for first time in more than a century
But again, motive alone is empty. There is "plenty of reason" for me to do all kinds of terrible things that I consider abhorrent and would never act on.
windthrown··on WhatsApp will progressively kill features until users accept new privacy policy
You are unhappy and disagree with the decision but are they really "red flags"? In the GitHub issues you mention Signal does provide what seems to me to be good-faith reasoning behind their decisions.

Was Silence removed from the Google Playstore? The link on silence.im does not work for me: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.smssecure....

windthrown··on Goodwill doesn't want broken toasters
I concur, this is my experience too and the reason I am a big supporter of Goodwill.

I did not think the lowest hourly wage at my local organization anywhere were as low as cited in these comments but I don't know the specifics.

windthrown··on TeamViewer sends collection agency if missed emails, even after making payment
Being hounded by debt collection agencies for months on end is miserable even if you don't end up needing to pay.
windthrown··on Will Linux phones stay around this time?
Development does continue as a community effort, so hopefully it can break through!: https://ubports.com/
windthrown··on China’s Dystopian “New IP” Plan for a New Internet
China also provides foreign aid all over the world. I would guess quite a few countries would be willing to consider this in exchange for subsidized infrastructure.
windthrown··on Standard Notes is a safe place for your notes, thoughts, and life's work
True but they are describing the two as related. I took it to mean they are able to avoid addressing a stream of half-baked feature requests precisely because they are not banking on an exponentially growing user base. If skipping or postponing a new feature causes them to miss a few users, so be it.
windthrown··on Thanks for the Bonus, I Quit
Abusing the power of their job to retaliate against specific parties? Yes it sounds like pretty clear-cut corruption.
windthrown··on Standard Notes is a safe place for your notes, thoughts, and life's work
It is stored locally (encrypted) and then synced when a connection is available.

Personally, I write enough notes on my phone in situations without an internet connection (airplane travel, subway commuting etc) that losing local storage would be a deal-breaker for me.

windthrown··on Standard Notes is a safe place for your notes, thoughts, and life's work
Not to belabor the "startup" debate but they actually do discuss growth goals on the blog:

"We don't want to speak for you, but we're sure you've felt it: Ever notice how your favorite applications seem to get slower over time? That's no coincidence. They call that "growth". It happens because panicked teams were frantically trying to throw more functions at what was a good idea for some stupid business goal. And a good idea turns into something that isn't, real quick. That thing you loved metastasized into something you hate.

If simplicity keeps us from adding features, so be it. Standard Notes is officially an anti-growth company. We don't mind. We set out to do one thing well: Allow you to write your notes and thoughts privately without friction, on every device you own..."
