windthrown··on Supreme Court rejects man’s bid to sue police over arrest for Facebook parody
Is there really no way to allow this other than a giant website banner that says "THIS IS A PARODY"? For goodness' sake the page was even posting images of bacon referring to old and well know pig/police jokes...
windthrown··on Meta just gave thousands of employees poor performance reviews
I think already knows what current and former employees think of his performance, and increased his security allowance as a result:

The latter. These tanks are still supplied by the municipal water system but storing it in the tanks allow for consistent water pressure in tall buildings.

windthrown··on Meta’s Push to Solve the Noisy Office
Ah that makes sense. Thanks!
windthrown··on Meta’s Push to Solve the Noisy Office
The picture is all you need. They added some small felt walls to their desks which still do not provide as much privacy as real cubicles and dubbed them "cocoons" to seem innovative.
windthrown··on Meta’s Push to Solve the Noisy Office
I agree with your overall point, but it sounds to me like the former CEO's "incontrovertible evidence" was not quite as strong as you felt, given that you go on say that these factors are not qualifiable.

Numeric metrics are certainly not the only way to bolster an argument but I'd be curious to hear more about the type of evidence the CEO used to make their case.

windthrown··on Amazon warns employees not to share confidential information with ChatGPT
But if you ran the company with the confidential information would you trust that? You would have no way of knowing if they actually honor those requests.
windthrown··on Royal Mail dismisses ‘absurd’ $80M ransom demand
Certainly not 100% of cases but very common:

"As ransomware attacks crippled businesses and law enforcement agencies, two U.S. data recovery firms claimed to offer an ethical way out. Instead, they typically paid the ransom and charged victims extra."

Does Snapseed fit the bill?

windthrown··on ‘Sam? Are you there? ’ The bizarre and brutal final hours of FTX
This man is 30 years old and committed fraud on a global scale with open eyes. Please stop calling these company executives "children", distinct from "adults" even if that's how they try to downplay ther own culpability.
windthrown··on Ask HN: Alternatives to AirDrop?
I have had good experiences with both Sharedrop (https://www.sharedrop.io/) and Snapdrop (https://snapdrop.net/). While they don't benefit from the slickness of being integrated in iOS, they both try to emulate the experience as much as possible and transfer effectively.
windthrown··on NYTimes Accidentally Leaked Phone Numbers Of Russian Soldiers Criticizing War
I know public perception of US news outlets is on shakey ground but holy shit this is a cynical take.

Whatever you think about the New York Times and its employees, they are not evil. You may not like how they are covering the war but the journalists are not trying to get their interviewees killed.

windthrown··on Ask HN: Are there any good open source text-to-speech tools?
I have heard good things about Mozilla's TTS: https://github.com/mozilla/TTS
windthrown··on System76 Lemur Pro Linux laptop with 14 hours of battery life
That's a fair stance but also worth mentioning that System76's logo on the Lemur laptop is a sticker and very easy to remove. I removed mine the first day I used it.
windthrown··on Some tiny personal programs I've written
That sounds interesting! Would you be willing to share it with those of us that don't work at Zillow?
windthrown··on Open-Sourcing our Firmware
I've had great battery life and overall experience with my System76 Lemur Pro. However, I have only used their PopOS and don't know if Manjaro would fare differently.
windthrown··on Mozilla's Firefox Relay to be added to disposable-email-domains blacklist
This is disappointing as I have really been enjoying using Firefox Relay to cut down on the email spam I receive. It looks like they are even planning on blacklisting the "custom" @personaldomain.mozmail.com domains that come with paid accounts.
windthrown··on Unusual login activity was due to bug
And even then, "some" of the alerts being "likely" triggered in error makes it sound like quite a few may have been actual security issues.
windthrown··on Should you contribute open data to OpenStreetMap?
No, in fact copying from Google Maps is a violation of their terms of service:

There isn't a speed limit but by placing strict limitations on the engine design, they indirectly limit the speed of the cars.
windthrown··on Backblaze IPO
At 14 years old, is Backblaze still considered "young"?
windthrown··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
It sounds like you are incredibly privileged to not have "pre-existing" or chronic medical conditions. For many, the ACA saved their lives and the lives of their loved ones even if the premiums were as universally outrageous as you claim.

windthrown··on Firefighters say they’re swamped by calls for routine care from senior homes
What you saw in Texas is actually quite common. In most other states I have lived, there are typically many more fire trucks than ambulances available. Because if that, Fire response times are much shorter and as they are are trained parametics, they are used as first-responders when not fighting fires. The situation you described was likely the handoff between fire and ambulance.
windthrown··on Footnotes now supported in GitHub Markdown
I think people are referring to the practice of effectively creating footnotes with HTML anchor tags [1]

windthrown··on Facebook Undermines Privacy Protections for Its 2B WhatsApp Users
One such improvement is the Sealed Sender feature: https://signal.org/blog/sealed-sender/

It's unclear to me is these are part of the "protocol" or just the Signal client.
