willis936··on Solving Factorio Quality
Honestly, this is the exact article I needed to finish my Space Age run. I finished Aquilio then started building quality plants on each planet but spent many hours iterating designs. The feedback loop was slow and it was really an exercise in banging rocks together. Basic spreadsheets fail at this mechanic, which is the beauty of it.
willis936··on ReBarUEFI: Resizable BAR for almost any UEFI system
It should come with a warning label. If you're in a scenario where VRAM is being maxed out and thrashing main memory then ReBAR will worsen the frequency and magnitude of the stutters. I ran into this with a 3070 (8 GB) recently.
willis936··on Robin Williams' Daughter to Fans Creating AI Videos: 'Have Some Shame'
I'm glad you're asking. If you notice no one has said, especially Zelda, that you can't do these things. Obviously you can. You have access to a computer. The question you should be asking is should you do these things?

Also, this a good list of false equivalences. Robin Williams, when public, was empathetic, emotional, and arguably humanist. His memory isn't a caricature from people who have never known him, as you would see from Star Trek holo-deck episodes featuring Leonardo Da Vanci. His memory is something that is deeply important to people who are living. Some of those people simply appreciated his art and his behavior. One of those people is his daughter. You don't get to say what is right or wrong here. No one's going to stop you if you want to make a video of Robin Williams taking the Siegfried Oath, but you should understand why it is wrong.

willis936··on Robin Williams' Daughter to Fans Creating AI Videos: 'Have Some Shame'
It's actually not the Streisand effect. The Streisand effect is about trying to smother a controversy and, in the process, breathing life into it.

Zelda is not exercising power or suppressing a controversy. This is just old fashioned dickheadedness. A generous interpretation would be juvenile trolling since they know their mark is vulnerable.

willis936··on Robin Williams' Daughter to Fans Creating AI Videos: 'Have Some Shame'
There's a few different ways to look at this.

1. You appreciate Robin Williams and were he here right now judging you for how you honor his memory, would he approve?

2. Robin Williams is not here, or anywhere, so then if he were would he approve of you bringing pain to someone he loved dearly? Why would you do that to Robin Williams?

3. Robin Williams is not here, or anywhere, so then nothing matters and I bet I could get some views.

It's difficult to see love in these acts when they seem to be fundamentally selfish. Not at all what Robin Williams would do.

willis936··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
DRM isn't really the story with Valve. Their business model is offer good service. Part of that is not being hostile to users. Users don't want to be spied on and have their data sold, so Valve doesn't do that. People want autonomy over their hardware, so they give them that. It's even in their marketing material for the steam machine. The frame is a computer running arch. If you want to 100% opt out of Steam and write your own driver stack, they're not standing in your way. That is uniquely pro-user and freedom in the tech industry. Also, their open source initiatives with proton and fex should not be discounted.

If there's a morally grey stone to turn over then imo it's the not-gambling-wink-microtransactions and even then it's no more predatory than what is common in the gaming industry.

willis936··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
I am so very glad to see all of my complaints with ios text entry so thoroughly articulated in this thread. My first thought with the iphone duo is "how many people are going to develop a repetitive stress injury with these awful text entry interfaces and giant heavy devices?"

Typing is more important than ever. We're a ways off from BCIs and there should be responsible and serious consideration for this problem.

willis936··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
This is one of the main selling points for me. I threw my CV1 in the trash when facebook required a login. I want to see what OpenXR apps are like. Is freecad and blender usable? I want to tinker with gaussian splatting. When finger tracking starts to develop can I reasonably use it for input without controllers? Could this ever be a practical replacement for a six monitor desk?

Also, my simracing seat has been very lonely. I'm so happy that there is an HMD running arch that gives the user root.

willis936··on A 386 PC for Your RP2350
The PIO are pretty great and not niche. Almost any embedded application needs mixed signal interfaces. You could say embedded applications are niche, but not that embedded applications needing mixed signal interfaces.

A serious warning: read the RP2350 errata carefully. You may be better off buying old 2040 inventory.

willis936··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
I agree it's a good practice. However in this case I consider the possibility of frying the amplifier a knock-on benefit. The fucking thing should have never been made.

If a hypothetical future owner feels strongly about it then replacing a telematics module in the dash is much easier than replacing harness runs. I somehow doubt I would sell one of my vehicles to someone who would do that though.

willis936··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
Okay it's a red herring here. I also like to use carplay and the phone's GPS is truly awful to use. I also like to dictate texts and take calls in my car. These are things that don't need to be sacrificed if a scalpel is used in place of a butcher's knife.

Sometimes it helps to have someone with their priorities in order keeping a reality check on people who don't always stay grounded.

willis936··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
A good question. I'm not really concerned with the answer since I don't plan on selling my cars. I'm sure a good population would pay to not have their car spy on them and I can think of very few that would pay to have it turned on.

Easily reversible mods only affect price for suckers anyway.

willis936··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
You're implying the stub of an exposed coax inside a faraday cage is capable of establishing a link with cell towers. This doesn't really pass fermi tests and I've never observed it myself, just read the paranoid concerns of people online.

Regardless, taping some foil around the connectors with the foil making okay contact with the metal chassis is more than enough attenuation at sub GHz microwave to remove this concern without having to source specialty terminations and crimpers (or worse, non-reversible damage to the OEM cable assemblies by repurposing their terminations). I've done the foil+tape on some of my vehicles, but it hasn't made a difference in binary "does it connect or not?" testing.

willis936··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
I've had good luck with pulling service manuals, finding the telematics antenna connectors, and unplugging them. It's popular to pull the telematics module fuse, but that typically disables internal microphones and GPS that are used by android auto and carplay. This severely degrades features spouses expect to just work. The antenna pulling is a much lighter touch.
willis936··on Nvidia dismisses "circular financing", says every $1 it invests brings back $100
But even that isn't really true since Nvidia P/E was unreasonably high even 4 years ago. So how is this not lying to investors (a thing that is illegal)?
willis936··on Detailed report on the use of solar geoengineering
This is a great article. I'm glad to see this sentiment is finally starting to gain traction:

>She fears that the rising dangers of climate change will put growing pressure on nations and other actors to move forward with solar geoengineering, even if no one has done the necessary research to reduce scientific uncertainty and sort out the technical challenges.

>“We don’t think the alternative is decisions not happening at all,” she says. “We think the alternative is decisions being made in a panic or on lack of evidence.”

Unfortunately the article ends on that point and we don't get the rebuttal of the lofty idyllic academics or fearful policymakers.

It's not a coincidence that this miracle is only being done on animals, where the legal protections of medicine are less.

willis936··on iPhone Duo
It makes the worst part of the iphone: text entry, even worse. I love the idea of a more capable PDA, but typing is more important than ever and it must be improved. Keyboards need to be a focus. Use eye tracking, use finger tracking, add physical buttons, just try something. Also, please fix the swiped keyboard software. It's unbearable. Admit it, fix it, quickly please.
willis936··on What will our economic future look like?
Those are ubiquitous things. It makes cheap and common things cheaper, not expensive and niche things. It's not mixing in large amounts of context and nuance with good judgment right now. At a minimum that requires an expensive context window but even frontier models aren't beating experts. Maybe they'll get there one day and maybe soon, but that would require hardware getting cheaper. Dennard scaling is over. Either bet on optical computing lighting the world on fire or be suspicious of the alchemists overpromising.

The timeline's always been a mess, but it has been something that has been given serious thought since at least the late 90s.

That's not to say that there is a capital C canon that constrains all subsequent installments to be 100% self consistent. They seem to enjoy the freedom of being able to change things to fit their vision for the next installment. I just don't think it's correct to say there's no thought at all put into the head revision of the canon.

I can understand because I find MCAD drafting to be a chore and like that I can describe a script to generate geometry now for most things.

Even still, it's difficult for me to fully get it. There is so much art in ECAD layout. There are many dimensions to weigh and high levels of thought and care can result in a higher quality, lower cost product. Many nuances are not properly captured by simplistic automations or chatbots and won't be for some time. Things that accelerate schematic capture, layout capture, library management, and simulation are all useful tools. They're most effective when used with care and thoughtfulness.

The synthesis attempt was not for this. It's unclear what they were attempting and it's impossible that they didn't know the stakes. Their lab develops fundamental organic methods.

willis936··on Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope
From what I can gather it is much more than just the primary mirror but the entire platform sans classified parts, which were replaced with NASA's optics and sensors.
willis936··on Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope
Part of the story is everyone being shocked at being under budget and ahead of schedule. I don't know everything, but I think this is reasonably attributable to the fact that this is a retrofit of an obsolete spy satellite. The leftovers of the security sector will be the most advanced scientific space surveyor. I have to wonder what things would look like with different priorities.

I'd love to know how it does. One of meshcore's claims is that it scales better than meshtastic. The 900 MHz band is limited and herding cats without a shepherd is a hard problem. Music festivals are a good stress test.
