williamsss··on Ask HN: Does anyone else feel like nothing matters anymore?
I’d wager if you filter out Show HN projects that have been maintained <2wks it would sift more gold to the top
williamsss··on A fortuitous decade as an indie software developer
As someone who took years investing in a system to easily spin up indie projects before vibe coding was coined. It’s been crushing to have built quality projects that are now swallowed up by a tidal wave of AI slop.

It may or may not be a great time to be a popular indie dev, but for the less known folks - it’s a lottery

williamsss··on Show HN: Lathe – Use LLMs to learn a new domain, not skip past it
This is similar to how I’ve transitioned to learning new programming languages. I used to build stuff to learn. However, with AI assisted coding I don’t have those organic moments I’m stuck and need to search online for the answer.

My learning process now uses Claude Code to serve as a tutor that creates bite sized lessons writing parts I want to re-review, found confusing, what lessons were reviewed and what is next into a long lived CLUADE.md file.

williamsss··on US Job Market Visualizer
Interesting to see models on the list at 8/10 of exposure
williamsss··on iPhone 17e
The weight is an issue for me at 189g. I've been looking for something compact, light weight, secure with a decent OS for 2 years without luck.

Iphone air is tempting at 165g if the screen was smaller. Unihertz Titan 2 Elite may hit the sweet spot if the weight is kept low.

williamsss··on When does MCP make sense vs CLI?
I’ve noticed Claude Codes sandbox mode works with MCPs. With CLIs I’ve rain into permission issues. CLIs also need reminding about whats available unless references are baked the context window.
williamsss··on My smart sleep mask broadcasts users' brainwaves to an open MQTT broker
This weekend I was trying to figure out how I can use my smart meter’s electricity data. I had a poke around MQTT explorer and realized I could see personal data points out in the open without encryption across a plethora of devices.
williamsss··on Yearly analytics on my spaced repetition results
I would have liked to see statistics on study session length eg. average duration. Also how long you typically spend creating per card and how many you created this year.

That information would help us all better assess whether the time spent on a spaced repetition flashcard system is justified

williamsss··on Show HN: OWhisper – Ollama for realtime speech-to-text
I’ve done something similar recently, using speaker diarization to handle situations where two or more people share a laptop on a recorded call.

Ultimately, I chose a cloud-based GPU setup, as the highest-performing diarization models required a GPU to process properly. Happy to share more if you’re going that route.

A few months ago I had to work around a problem like this and the best out there was WhisperX. Not sure about transformer.js support.

Link to the repo - https://github.com/m-bain/whisperX

williamsss··on My experience with Claude Code after two weeks of adventures
As a daily active user of Cursor and CC user myself, it’s gratifying to discover nuanced tricks that push productivity further. I stumble upon one every now and again.

Solid write up. And chock full of useful tricks!

I was manually copy pasting PR change requests today to CC where some of this would have saved my wrists some pain.

williamsss··on Go is a good fit for agents
JavaScript has known issues with math. It should be avoided for that reason alone, no?
williamsss··on Ask HN: What projects do you donate to?
There’s something that’s embittered me about the subscription model and projects made purely for greed. I particularly enjoy supporting projects fiscally which that are passion projects that they could probably charge more for.

https://www.keybr.com - shows ads if you want to use it for free or you can pay a small fee to remove ads. The code is open-sourced so you can make your own. Helped me get the hang of split keyboards and was money well spent to support.

https://enso.sonnet.io - ingenious idea that has helped me write without loosing focus editing myself. The solo developer guy shares an entertaining blog full of illustrations and rich content. his project is available to download in full from Gumroad for a small one time fee.

If there’s any projects you know of like these please share them!

williamsss··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
Sounds cool. Is it open-source?
williamsss··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
Nice one
williamsss··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
Reminds me of the Zettelkasten note-taking method.

I'm not confident I understand how it works from the site though. A video of how it works would be helpful.

williamsss··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
You're the first person I've heard of that has gone this route. Cool to know I'm not alone.

And yeah I have the same gripes around the writing experience. I prefer Vim so I've been looking into ways I can use my notes as local markdown which sync on save. Of course, keeping the Directus editor for my mobile device edits.

williamsss··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
I really admire the way you've solved this.

This is exactly the type of thing I want to inspire others to tinker with! Some of the readers feel there's a single optimal solution. Though I'm confident that there's room for a plethora of PKMS solutions

Oh and funny enough I'm in the process of working on an open-source chrome extension for bookmarking things I've read it looks similar to your https://github.com/osmoscraft/osmosmemo project. Picture of the tool in use is here https://notes.holeytriangle.com/admin/files/a969c5f6-fa9c-44...

williamsss··on Side projects I've built since 2009
How have you found buyers for your projects?
williamsss··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
How?
williamsss··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
Where are the text/pictures stored?
williamsss··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
Open-source code has been known to have back doors and versions with security vulnerabilities.

I would never use AI code gen I don't understand fully and typically made amendments to get what I need the tooling to do. So yes I prefer personal simple scripts I maintain and understand 100% : )

> Also Obsidian asks for permissions to read files in all of the device on Android.

Oh interesting where did you find that?

williamsss··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
You should write about your solution it sounds interesting
williamsss··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
Thanks for sharing this is an understated point from the article as I was fiddling with Evernote, Notion then Obsidian more than I would like to admit. With this I certainly fiddle but I create what I need and get in and out of my notes.

If people find that rhythm and flow with their own PKMS - don't switch for the next shiny thing!

williamsss··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
This too is a solid choice particularly with Github actions for free cron jobs for instance
williamsss··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
A solid lasting PKMS solution
williamsss··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
Agreed. Particularly with running your notes through a text embedded model you can use semantic similarity and no longer need to manually link notes! This is something I'm excited to add in to my PKMS at some point.

Simon Wilson does a great job at explaining this here https://simonwillison.net/2023/Oct/23/embeddings/ see video at 6.30 min to about 10min point.
