william-at-rain··on Cobra Maneuver
“Go up, blow up” is the common phrase in this kind of aerial combat. You highlight your heat signature against… space.

Even without heaters, I can be extremely aggressive on a guns attempt because an overshoot in the vertical isn’t nearly as risky - few aircraft can capitalize on an overshoot uphill. Almost all defenders in that situation (if they live through the attack) will be forced downhill anyway.

I’m a huge fan of Graphviz and git. Text is easily diffable!

Try SketchViz.com and see what you think.

Also a shoutout to yEd Graph Editor (free).

william-at-rain··on Ask HN: Two people laid off due to known Google/Elastic billing bug. Now what?
Thanks.

> If you're being charged 10x @32k, that's 3k/week 'normal' charges

Close - about $2,500 a week.

I spent the morning adding SSDs to a bare metal HP DL360p with 32 cores and 192GB RAM on it.

Elastic fixed their bug this morning - so the bleed has stopped (confirmed on GCP dashboard).

We still have $32k tied up, so I bought the hardware out of pocket w/ personal savings. We started ingest to the VMs (new single-server, multi-node ES deployment) as well.

> You can also run your own 'cloud' on bare metal too.

I'm thinking about buying three more servers and throwing them in our rack. Everything will be slower, but we won't have the same version of existential crisis in our future. That adds so much OTHER risk (and expense) as well... Multicloud is looking appealing here (via, ironically, K8s all the things).

Yeah. Classic move. Basically she was implying I laid people off because I wanted to and this post was cover.

william-at-rain··on Ask HN: Two people laid off due to known Google/Elastic billing bug. Now what?
That's... not true.

ES is critical infra for us, and I'm not really capable of managing the devops to make a switch happen. Otherwise I wouldn't be paying an override to ES for what amounts to a Kubernetes spec and some glue.

I've been engaged w/ Google and Elastic for a week today. Not sure where you get your certainty.

Another plug for the fantastic and free yEd Graph Editor.
william-at-rain··on Mind map / flowcharts with automatic layouts that work
I've been using this for months now, and it's absolutely incredible.

I waste zero time re-organizing as I create charts, so I don't lose thoughts while trying to make sure the boxes are organized.

TIPS:

* F2 - change the caption on your shape

* F6 - update properties of the shape/connector

* Layouts - experiment with clustering to get cool insights!

william-at-rain··on Ask HN: How to Find Our CTO?
Awesome! I’m sorry I came off as wanting a FAANG person. I don’t care about that.

What I DO need is someone familiar with data engineering, full stack web dev, startups, and managing people/projects.

I’ve posted jobs on Indeed and others - no luck! Any tactics for finding and getting into conversation with these folks?

Emailed. Thank you.

Thanks - I’ll reach out.
william-at-rain··on Ask HN: Outreach for Covid-19 longitudinal study proposal?
It looks like you send an automated text to a questionnaire. That’s a much simpler way to start, and a text is a great “push notification”... :-)
william-at-rain··on Ask HN: Outreach for Covid-19 longitudinal study proposal?
I wonder if there is a way to engineer our past that in the first month.

Maybe a web-based PWA while we wait for approval.

And not specifically calling it a COVID-19 app.
