willhackett··on Crazy Thin ‘Deep Insert’ ATM Skimmers
I think the magnetic strip needs to go. We hardly use them in Australia to the point where one of our major banks actually has a touch reader on their machine.

Some sort of one-time verification would be great. An SMS or a push notification would go a long way to making this type of scraping harder.

Or eliminate the card altogether - Cardless Cash.

willhackett··on Shazam turns 20
Shazam is truly magical. For those iPhone users that don’t know, you can add it to Control Centre for quick access.
willhackett··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
I wish I liked the way they look and that giant touch screen. But I don’t, so I have to suffer my disobedient voice control.
willhackett··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
I agree with this. Voice control fitted to cars is pretty terrible still. It interrupts playback, takes a long time to resolve an input and takes even longer to repeat it back to you before doing it. Siri makes this a little bit better, but she's not been given access to the AC APIs of my car.

Buttons are the way. Or those cool switches from fighter jets... I'd like to see those in a car.

"Sir, can you please explain what you were doing when the accident occurred?"

This touchscreenification needs to stop.

Familiarity is my personal favourite part of driving. Knowing the road, how much input you need to apply to a turn, knowing where the buttons for things are, just being able to feel for a control and know its purpose. All while my eyes are on the road.

You lose this with a screen.

I really like this. I think a change to the input questions could solve this — clearer, more specific questions like "What's changed?", "Is it worse/better?".
willhackett··on Apple Facing Lawsuit After AirPods Allegedly Ruptured Eardrums with Amber Alert
I’ve had an issue a few times with Apple Music playing high pitched screeching sounds where I’ve had to throw my headphones off. Seems to be when there’s a loss of connectivity. I know these things slip through the cracks sometimes, but I feel like anything that impacts health should be tested thoroughly.

I love things like this. Reminds me of the old FlyakiteOSX site or Gooey.

Links on a page, essentially. I'm really bad at this.

willhackett··on Docker Hub Is Down
Does anybody know if this could be creating flow-on effects to Google Container Registry? We're seeing some very weird behaviour at the moment.
willhackett··on High Sierra macOS freezing and stops
I thought it was just me. But to see so many people disappointed with the decline in quality of macOS and accompanying products is somewhat comforting—at least from the potential standpoint that Apple may make some response.

I've been a die-hard Apple user since moving from Windows in 2009. I'm even powered by MobileMe from the days where you paid for your sync. Nothing has changed much since then.

I find myself watching things like the Essentials Phone and Google's secretive desktop operating system for some escape from the Apple ecosystem. I love the hardware. I love the support. But the symphony of hardware and software working together as one isn't as special as it used to be.

The desktop apps are inconsistent and distant to their iOS cousins. The experiences in the apps seems hinged on a time long past. Newer "features" in the operating system feel tacked on—not working effectively. I know they don't want to merge iOS and macOS—but I feel they have a better grasp on what's going on behind iOS than Mac. Perhaps it's time to put Mac out of its misery and bring iOS a little bit of Mac—terminal, filesystem and more.

willhackett··on Host your own contacts and calendars and share them across devices
I've done this before. It becomes tedious to maintain, but I can imagine myself doing it again in the future to allow me to do what cannot be done in the common clouds (iCloud, G Suite, O365).

I would love a whitelist-only inbox. I'm sick of spam, marketing mail, etc. I'd like one public email address that catches all the garbage. Then, I'd like a private email address that accepts emails from my contacts, and bounces the rest.

willhackett··on 18yo arrested for reporting a bug in the new Budapest e-Ticket system
A sure-fire way to let vulnerabilities go unnoticed and unfixed.
willhackett··on Stopping the Internet of Noise – A useful internet back again
I'm very much for this. I have five messaging apps, two email clients, three file storage apps and a news reader all on my iPhone - just to stay in touch. It's hard to stay organised when businesses use different technologies across different platforms and there's no single place just for "Messages".

I don't care how the message is sent, I just want to make sure it gets to the right person.

Startup working on Community Software | Node/React Full Stack Developer | Brisbane, Australia | Full-Time | On-site

We're a small team working on a platform to connect communities and members, while providing a more automated approach to the icky managerial stuff.

If you're keen to be part of our team and build some cool stuff with the latest tech stacks, shoot us an email. We're not crazy about resume's, just a nice Github link would be cool.

willhackett··on Autodraw – Fast Drawing for Everyone
Okay. This is great, but I feel like Google's off doing everything but looking after their current products. Google Inbox is in dire needs of new features to bring it in line with competitive mail products, and GMail needs a facelift.
