wielebny··on The Ploopy A+ Trackball Is Here
I use trackballs since decades.

I heavily recommend mapping some keys on keyboard for left and right mouse click, to be used with opposite hand.

Instant upgrade for finger operated trackballs.

wielebny··on HackerRank open sourced its ATS. My resume scored 90/100. Oh wait 74. No – 88
This seems like extremely illegal in Europe.
wielebny··on Surprise, pay $1000
That's a typical discrepancy between how US and EU sees civil agreements.

In Europe it's perfectly normal to be bound by terms of a paid service. I would never expect to avoid being liable for payments for services rendered only because I didn’t enter a cc number before exceeding free-tier limits.

Even in the comments below people are stating that this bill is valid only if they want to continue using the service.

wielebny··on An Introduction to Meshtastic
Only the app store app which does not matter for usage. There are tons of other clients. Core firmware is Open Source.
wielebny··on We replaced RAG with a virtual filesystem for our AI documentation assistant
Someone simply assumed at some point that RAG must be based on vector search, and everyone followed.
wielebny··on I was banned from Claude for scaffolding a Claude.md file?
Thank you for pointing that out.

I was banned two weeks ago without explanation and - in my opinion - without probable cause. Appeal was left without response. I refuse to join Discord.

I've checked bot support before but it was useless. Article you've linked mentions DSA chat for EU users. Invoking DSA in chat immediately escalated my issue to a human. Hopefully at least I'll get to know why Anthropic banned me.

wielebny··on There's a ridiculous amount of tech in a disposable vape
Or 7 undergrads and one day.
wielebny··on Redis is fast – I'll cache in Postgres
If you need persistence on your Redis, then you're not using is as a cache. You're using it as a key-value store.
wielebny··on A deep dive into Debian 13 /tmp: What's new, and what to do if you don't like it
I run a script that rotates my /tmp/ each day, so I can access yesterday's tmp files at /tmp/20250828/ and so on.

My /tmp is my default folder for downloads and temporary work. It will grow 100GB+ easily.

wielebny··on Amazon's Vulcan Robots Now Stow Items Faster Than Humans
Slower than a human making one operation.

Not slower than human stocking items for a whole day.

wielebny··on Track your devices via Apple FindMy network in Go/TinyGo
They work well but don't have the UWB part and need to have battery replaced every few months.
wielebny··on Should more of us be moving to live near friends?
> People in rural areas still hang out with one another (and even... alot)

Aren't those like really dangerous?

wielebny··on Show HN: I 'integrated' ChatGPT in iOS-iPadOS-macOS with out official support
Tools to do this are and have been available for many months.

The difficulty is in scale. Enabling every smartphone owner to use GenAI, especially using voice commands requires hardware resources several orders of magnitude greater than what OpenAI is currently burning through.

The LLM-powered Siri/Alexa/Google Assistant was a matter of infrastructure investment.

With the recent Apple's announcement, it's only a matter of time with Google and others following through.

wielebny··on ExploitGSM – exploit for 5.15-6.1 and 6.4-6.5 kernels
Seemingly CVE-2023-6546, seemingly fixed in kernel, but still exploitable.

Just verified that on Debian Bookworm with Linux 6.1.0-18-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.76-1 (2024-02-01) x86_64

wielebny··on Kagi and Wolfram
Pity it can't subtract time.

> 16:28 - 14:50 = 22 hours and 22 minutes

although, Google never could not too.

wielebny··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
This strategy may work for a (D)DoS that is targeted to an application layer, but won't work if the attack is designed to exhaust your bandwidth.

Once you're receiving more traffic than you network cards can handle, it does not matter if you'll drop the packets with iptables or not.

I was the target of attacks that caused Hetzner to terminate my contract. I was leasing physical servers there, so I assume the attacks were overwhelming their infrastructure.

wielebny··on Gitlab's ActivityPub architecture blueprint
This is exciting and could be disruptive to closed software hosting platforms.

ActivityPub's open standard is an added bonus. A fediverse for code? Sing me in.

wielebny··on Polish trains lock up when serviced in third-party workshops
Here a comprehensive write-up in Polish in a somewhat sensationalized - but rightly so - tone: https://zaufanatrzeciastrona.pl/post/o-trzech-takich-co-zhak...
wielebny··on Memories from old LAN parties
It's neither an accident nor planned mechanism. It had nothing to do with network, the transmission wasn't switching to multicast.

Probably the author observed that reading different files from disk simultaneously was slower, until the copy process catches up to read the same files.

wielebny··on Interaction to Next Paint (INP)
> This may be controversial but I think this has the potential to be a brilliant metric because it measures some part of web UX that’s often neglected.

It also seems to be a metric that is very easily gamed.

If all that matters is instant feedback, then just draw that loader as soon as user clicks add to cart, do not wait for the request to start. It does not matter that it will take X or Y seconds.

wielebny··on PostgreSQL reconsiders its process-based model
Having been using and administering a lot of PostgreSQL servers, I hope they don't lose any stability over this.

I've seen (and reported) bugs that caused panics/segfaults in specific psql processes. Not just connections, also processes related to wal writing or replication. The way it's built right now, a child process can be just forced to quit and it does not affect other processes. Hopefully switching into thread won't force whole PostgreSQL to panic and shut down.

wielebny··on Queues should be empty
Also, water should be wet and SQL tables need to have primary keys.
wielebny··on GitHub is aggressively caching raw.github, breaking many use cases
Per RFC 2616:

> This response is only cacheable if indicated by a Cache-Control or Expires header field.

wielebny··on Tips for a healthier Postgres database (2021)
These are usually stored in CSV files.
wielebny··on The Future of Thunderbird
> no support for O365, unless you pay for a 3rd party plugin

It seems that Thunderbird supports O365 oauth natively now, including access to calendars.

I know I had to use some plugins in the past, but now, it just works.

wielebny··on Posters of the IPv4 and IPv6 internet as of Jan 1, 2023
Is 3ffe::/16 (6bone) still active on the Internet?
wielebny··on Ask HN: What are you buying on Cyber Monday
CKA exam from Linux Foundation: https://training.linuxfoundation.org/cyber-2022/#coursescert...

Been waiting for few weeks on this.

wielebny··on Ubisoft+Bungie Scrambling to Evacuate Players Games from Capsizing Google Stadia
There are several gems - my family easily spent 1000+ hours on Wittcher 3, Zelda, Hades or Animal Crossing - but most of the games are just too bland.

I'm a fan of cloud gaming and have used both Stadia and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It appeals to me, as I don't have to invest in a gaming rig and can play on almost everything.

wielebny··on Lua, a Misunderstood Language (2021)
> If I ask you to count the number of red balls in a bag with only 3 yellow balls, then the initial count in your head is 0, you inspect the balls one by one, never encountering a red ball, and thus never incrementing the count. And then you pronounce your final count of 0. So that's counting starting from 0.

Well, just like lua:

    > a={}

    > print(#a)

    < 0
wielebny··on Apache Apisix: Open-Source API Gateway and API Management Platform
The selling point for me was ability to configure it using Kubernetes CRD's and future support of the Gateway API (under development - <https://gateway-api.sigs.k8s.io/>).

Developers can version their API now within helm charts or even yaml templates held along the code in their repositories.
