whoisthemachine··on .NET 10
As others point out, that's F#, but yes C# has `async`/`await`, and has all the `Promise` methods, just under the `Task` class instead (and with slightly different names/calling conventions through out).
whoisthemachine··on .NET 10
There's still a lot of folks who consider themselves .Net experts who don't know how to program with async/await, so knowing about a niche IDE (which I also exclusively use) is asking a lot for those people.
whoisthemachine··on Microsoft's lack of quality control is out of control
Linux manages just fine without a QC department. However, it also only takes responsibility for the "kernel". Various components around the kernel can be broken, and indeed some filesystems can cause file loss, but users full-well know of those flaws because of the transparent nature of Linux development.

Perhaps a lack of transparency and too many responsibilities under one product (something Microsoft loves to do) is the problem, not the lack of an additional process layer.

whoisthemachine··on When Tesla's FSD works well, it gets credit. When it doesn't, you get blamed
That does sound like a punishment for not using it. My statement was more whether they actively sell you a discount for using it.

Tesla's FSD will be good enough when you get an insurance discount for using it.

For those interested, funding gaps only really became a thing in the 1970's, during Ford's administration [0]. It wasn't until a new interpretation of the Anti-Deficiency Act of 1880 that they became known as "shutdowns" in 1980 [1]. So a relatively recent phenomenon.

Hilariously, prior to that law, the executive branch would overspend early in the year, forcing more spending from congress in order to meet their contracts [2].

whoisthemachine··on US Government Uptime Monitor
This did make me curious, when did the federal government start "running" on a budget and "shutting down" when it doesn't have enough money? All 250 years, or is this a more recent phenomenon?
whoisthemachine··on With deadline looming 4 of 9 universities reject Trumps pact to remake higher ed
Yes, in whatever way congress directs, and as long as it doesn't violate the constitution (if you want to change the constitution, you have to amend it). The executive branch is merely supposed to execute the law as congress writes it. I would be surprised it the law stated "if the entity does not follow the same ideology as the current occupant of the executive branch, then funds may be withheld", and such a law may be challenged on grounds of constitutionaliry...

Are these university administrations the government? Because any private entity is free to censor as much as they want (as we have seen with many entities after Charlie Kirk's murder).

Saying "this private entity censored so now the government can" is not the argument you think it is.

This Douglas Adams quote could also apply to the internet writ large

This is politics.

whoisthemachine··on TextKit 2 – The Promised Land
This is an unavoidable result of lazy layouts. With the LazyList in Jetpack compose, it's comically difficult to produce a scrollbar, because the "LazyList" only ever lays out the visible items, so Compose can't really know (unless you actually already know) the full size of the list.

I find the iron triangle of project management reins supreme in a lot of domains: quality is sacrificed in the name of performance.

I have a laptop with the same GPU, and Diablo 4 runs really well out of Lutris. Graphics version 570, and the CPU is an AMD with a Radeon 680M integrated. I often play games with FSR on, which probably keeps performance higher?

whoisthemachine··on CAPTCHAs are over (in ticketing)
> The vast majority, hard to quantify, but I'd guess well over 99% of professional musicians (certainly outside the US) never play a ticketmaster venue. They're not operating at that scale. When they tour it's at smaller venues - there are orders of magnitude more small bars and dedicated venues not owned by ticket master.

This is probably true, but I'm guessing smaller artists are also at much lower risk of scalpers (at least my anecdata backs that up) so probably much less applicable to the problem at hand.

whoisthemachine··on Evolving OpenAI's Structure
I find these assumptions curious. How so? What is the AGI going to do that captures markets? Even if it can take over all desk work, then what? Who is going to consume that? And further more (and perhaps more importantly), with it putting everyone out of work, who is going to pay for it?
whoisthemachine··on The ongoing story of seconds on the taskbar

whoisthemachine··on Black Horse: One Stop to Orbit (1995)
Interesting. I do recall the U2 needed a chase car for landing [0], but I don't remember the challenges in takeoff. Any good resources on it? The concept I found in this essay occurred to me a few days ago after reading a news article about refueling aircraft for sale [1] and I thought hey why can't "they" "just" build an aircraft that takes off with normal jet fuel and at proper altitude and speed is refueled with rocket fuel? So I had to do a little digging, and it turns out it has been researched by NASA backed scientists, and it isn't even a half bad idea! Better than a lot of "why can't they just" ideas at least.

Anyways - if you have resources on the take off issues with high-performance aircraft, I would appreciate it :)
