whenwillitstop··on Ask HN: What's the state of the job market in data science and machine learning?
Not true. I'm a run of the mill developer. I had another offer, I called google, told them I had another offer. They skipped all the rounds but the final.
whenwillitstop··on Ask HN: What's the state of the job market in data science and machine learning?
I am curious about this as well. I think the difference between machine learning and software engineering is that companies may only need a few dozen machine learning engineers. They may need thousands of software engineers. There may be increasing demand, but the demand will never reach the demand of software engineering. Except at the premium ultra competitive level, where a data scientist who is globally known can have a massive impact on the companies bottom line. But we arent talking about those types of jobs.

I also believe that most traditional companies do have data scientists, but they havent really start incorporating machine learning into their products, they are analyzing information about their customers, but their products are not reliant on using data. Once that becomes more common, things will pick up.

whenwillitstop··on The worrying implications of China's social-credit project
"Some guy got access to Podesta's email through a fishing attack."

-Hmm, the fishing email was sent from a server in Russia.

"Don't worry Trump will never win."

Trump wins.

"HACKING, RUSSIANS HACKED THE ELECTION!!!!!!"

It's Russias fault! Not the gross negligence of the democratic party! This has nothing to do with our terribly flawed candidate! The election was illegitimate!

But really, more concerning is the president of the United States calling an election illegitimate. That is the real news story here.

whenwillitstop··on The worrying implications of China's social-credit project
Ever heard of how difficult attribution is in hacking? They got access to the emails through a fishing attack. Even if the attack IP address originated from Russia, you think they really know it was Russia? Come on. This is pure manipulation of the American public.
whenwillitstop··on The worrying implications of China's social-credit project
The amount of propaganda in the news right now is at an all time high. The general population is becoming acutely aware of this though. There is a narrative pushed by every major news station that is false.

The Russian hacking allegation is a classic piece of red scare propaganda, right out of the book. Scarier than a Donald Trump presidency, is a constant barrage of fear mongering news.

whenwillitstop··on How leaving a corporate job to join a startup fucked me up and sorted my life
Weird, I was thinking the same
whenwillitstop··on Ask HN: Who is firing?
All ad tech stocks that are not GOOG and FB are getting slammed. They cannot compete against the data and ML talent of those two companies.
whenwillitstop··on German Leaders at Odds with Industry Over Electric Cars
So then why make them at all? To prepare for when selling them is a necessity?
whenwillitstop··on Visualizing How Developers Rate Their Own Programming Skills
I think this is a selection bias. In my experience most of the people attending meet ups are people trying to learn about the topic. They view it as a free class, way to network into a job using that technology, or something similar.

Me?

I'm just more interested in calling out drudgery, propaganda, forced fanaticism of boring topics, and adding color

whenwillitstop··on What Test Engineers Do at Google: Building Test Infrastructure
Could this be one of the most meaningless and trite jobs whilst still maximizing prestige? How many people will work this job in despair? How many intelligent people will spend years coding the obscurity that is test infra?

whenwillitstop··on Young, talented and fed-up: scientists tell their stories
Because that idea is a fantasy, it has never come to fruition and never will. Progress is made through real incentives. Wouldnt it be nice if nobody stole from eachother? Sounds great doesnt it? Then why doesnt it happen?

The play chips are not imaginary, the rich have better lives in almost all aspects.

whenwillitstop··on Young, talented and fed-up: scientists tell their stories
this thought process is pure brainwashing by the left
whenwillitstop··on Laid off (2008)
What do you mean by glances? You mean they are suspicious of your work quality? They dont want to hire you? Or they just give you a quick glance (because of the gap) and hire you anyways?

whenwillitstop··on The surprising benefits of a mid-career break
Can anyone in this thread speak to how it would impact a software engineers career in the USA? I've considered doing this for a while, just afraid to give up all I've worked for
whenwillitstop··on The surprising benefits of a mid-career break
Can I ask what your career was before leaving? I've worked very hard to get to where I'm at, solving machine learning problems for a great company. But I really just want to quit and travel the world. Leaving behind all the effort I just put in seems like such a shame, I'm not sure if I could get back to where I am now. Where have you travelled? Are you going solo?
whenwillitstop··on New research suggests that social mobility in America may be more limited
"But then, there should be little variability among successful unrelated families, and that is just not so."

This does not follow from your first statement. It's not a logical conclusion. For your reduction to a binary set of alleles it does, but it does not come close to being an analogy for real life.

whenwillitstop··on New research suggests that social mobility in America may be more limited
It's genetics, why is this such a mystery? The whole point of evolution is that you pass on good traits. When people do well, they pair with other people who are good genetically, and through the generations, their children do well. Why is this such a mystery?
whenwillitstop··on New research suggests that social mobility in America may be more limited
A diverse society over time will converge to where people's abilities are.

As t -> infinity, social mobility -> 0

whenwillitstop··on Paul Erdős: a life that added up to something (1996)
Scientists who have a monetary incentive to prove that the drugs feel different for people with ADHD. Ever hear about how most depression drugs don't beat the placebo? But we're still told all about the "science" of chemical imbalance. We've got a population here that is drugging themselves...
whenwillitstop··on Paul Erdős: a life that added up to something (1996)
That's what happens when you live your life on speed.
whenwillitstop··on Paul Erdős: a life that added up to something (1996)
No they don't. Adderall is speed it just floods your brain with dopamine. Everyone feels more focussed. It's all propaganda pushed by the drug companies.

With all due respect, I am baffled at how people can believe this.

whenwillitstop··on New Yorkers Can Now Get Unlimited UberPool in Manhattan for $200
No the car just drives out of its way to pick up new people, they do it to make the ride profitable. It is completely unreliable as a ride to work, since a 30 minute commute can turn into an hour one if the algorithm takes the car too far off course.
whenwillitstop··on New Yorkers Can Now Get Unlimited UberPool in Manhattan for $200
I live in Manhattan. This is a rip off. The Uber Pool rides can take up to an hour sometimes, they drop off and pick up up to five people on your way. Uber if you are reading this, everyone in NYC realizes what a waste of time Uber Pool is.
