Where's the hit counter? Mind pointing me to it. Can't find it anywhere at TFA.

The title: What Transport for London can learn about us from our mobile data

I don't see what about the title is so emotionally charged. It only asks the question what London transport can learn from mobile data and the article answers precisely that.

After Brexit, is GDPR relevant to London transport anymore? I'd guess that UK now probably has their own version of GDPR?
whent··on Bloomberg sponsors curl with 10K USD
I am making no such assumption. I am only expressing my gripe against those commenters who are not happy that this grant is like 1 month's salary. So I am only making the point that it may not be one company's responsibility to pay enough money to equal any number of months or years of salary. On the other hand any single company is free to pay as littile or as much money as they want and if all companies did the same thing then it might be enough money to appease some of these commenters who seem to expect that the developers should be paid much more than a month's worth of salary.

I am personally all for paying hundreds of thousands of dollars or even millions of dollars if the companies are up for it.

Of course, I don't get to decide it. That's exactly my point! You seem to be restating my point. Each company is free to decide for themselves how much they want to contribute.

> Hooray. That'll pay for one developer for one month.

If 20 more companies did this, then it would pay for one developer for one year, don't you think?

whent··on Bloomberg sponsors curl with 10K USD
This! What all these ungrateful nerds seem to disregard is whether one company should take the responsibility of paying the curl author enough to match a year's worth of salary? Or should more companies (and there are many that make much bigger revenues) each contribute 10K to this project to total a year's worth of salary?
whent··on Jack Dorsey reveals his biggest regret about Twitter
I remember Twitter in early days. Developers loved its REST APIs. They were already building integrations for custom dashboards, email, Yahoo chat, IRC and what not! Users could choose where they want to read the tweets using one of these integrations. They could read it on their terminal (xterm and such), on their favorite chat messenger or any other medium which had an integration.

It was the early days of Web 2.0 and to have social interactions on the web which could be made available on any platform in any form was phenomenal. It is really sad to see such a geek-friendly place turn into a politically charged place full of trolling, spamming, witchhunts and nasty fighting!

whent··on I 10x'd a TI-84 emulator's speed by replacing a switch-case
Are function tables really all that cleaner? Honest question. If I can offer a counterpoint a function table requires us to code some function dispatch routine that looks at the intention (keywords in function table), then looks up the function, then finds a way to bind the arguments to the function (language specific) and finally call the function? Isn't this more complexity in code?

Isn't switch-case simple because it is available as a construct in the language?

whent··on Why your daily stand-ups don't work and how to fix them
> everyone can see it on issue tracker

I don't think this is necessarily true. If an engineer is blocked on a difficult problem for a day they don't have time update issue tracker to say they are blocked.

whent··on Ask HN: What Is the Lisp “Enlightment”?
For me Lisp enlightenment was when I realized everything is lambda all the way down (except of course for lists and atoms). I mean we don't really need all the various fancy let, let*, defun expressions to do programming. let, defun are all just abstractions on top of LAMBDA expressions. That means that we don't need some 30 odd keywords to bootstrap a language like we do in C. We can bootstrap a language implementation with some 8 or so special forms and everything else can be defined in terms of those. Isn't that beautiful?
