whatrocks··on Voyager 1 runs on 69 KB of memory and an 8-track tape recorder
Yes, yes! I got really into the Voyager-inspiration vibes for a while and wrote this little short story about a secret "Voyager 3" mission - thought you might enjoy it: https://f52.charlieharrington.com/stories/voyager-3/

whatrocks··on What to Do
Somewhat similar to my answer (borrowed from children's publisher Klutz Press): "Create wonderful things, be good, have fun"

whatrocks··on Piranesi's Perspective Trick (2019)
I think about this book ALL the time. It was way more terrifying than calming to me. But still absolutely love it / haunted by it.
whatrocks··on PLATO: An educational computer system from the '60s shaped the future (2023)
Love this book. I did a short interview with the author Brian Dear about his writing tools + process a while back. Perhaps my favorite anecdote is that he started working on this book in 1985, using MSDOS and later a NeXT cube for his notes. The authorial process truly experienced the full gamut of personal storage mediums over the years.

whatrocks··on Orion, our first true augmented reality glasses
I wrote a short story about AR + "Golden Compass"-style daemons a few years ago. Feels like we're inching closer:

whatrocks··on Ask HN: Book recommendations for CS fundamentals for a self-taught programmer?
My friend Oz has a few resources here that many have found helpful (me included!)

* https://teachyourselfcs.com - book list and open course suggestions

* https://csprimer.com - Oz's own curriculum for CS fundamentals

whatrocks··on Blockbuster Video VHS insert template
The memories! I once wrote a short story once about the “other” last Blockbuster - a place where your VHS videos might just let you truly relive your past, at some great cost, of course. Anyway, I love when weird stuff like this comes to dwell on GitHub.

Here’s the story

whatrocks··on Ask HN: Which programming podcasts do you listen to?
It’s more CS education and learning focused, but my friend Oz and I have been doing the CS Primer Show for the last year. Had a brief hiatus for more family time, but we’ll be back in August with more chats and whatnot about Bell Labs and other computer science fun.

https://show.csprimer.com

Also YouTube version: https://youtube.com/@cs_primer

whatrocks··on Piet: Programming language in which programs look like abstract paintings (2002)
Discovering Piet is a special moment of awe and confusion and wonder. Mine was captured in this chat with my friend Oz in our Computer Science podcast “The CS Primer Show”: https://show.csprimer.com/episodes/e2-dont-let-a-gpt-have-al...
whatrocks··on NASA's Voyager 1 Resumes Sending Engineering Updates to Earth
Sucker for any news about the voyage of the Golden Record (almost but not quite a CS Lewis title)! For fun, I wrote a short story two years ago about a top-secret "Voyager 3" mission (and the probe's unexpected return to Earth): https://f52.charlieharrington.com/stories/voyager-3/
whatrocks··on Voyager 1 stops communicating with Earth

whatrocks··on Recreating John Carmack-style .plan daily notes with Farcaster protocol
Thanks - it’s fun to see what you can string together and keep everything free, too.
whatrocks··on The magic of Bell Labs [video]
Interview with Jon Gertner (author of THE IDEA FACTORY: BELL LABS AND THE GREAT AGE OF AMERICAN INNOVATION) and Jimmy Soni (author of A MIND AT PLAY: HOW CLAUDE SHANNON INVENTED THE INFORMATION AGE)
whatrocks··on Show HN: Axilla – Open-source TypeScript framework for LLM apps
It’s also the name of a great Phish song!
whatrocks··on Notes on Stanford Linear Accelerator Center
Nope, definitely not. Seems like a side-effect of that Github Action. Haven't seen it before. I manually re-rotated and then purged the cloudflare cache. So I think they should be normal again. Thank you for the ping!
whatrocks··on Notes on Stanford Linear Accelerator Center
Author here. I'll take this comment charitably, because it did lead me to discover that I merged the PR well before my Github action to compress images completed. Just re-ran it, and the images are all ~50% reduced in size now: https://github.com/whatrocks/blag/pull/22

Thank you for this nudge. I'm sure there's more I could do here, but hopefully this helps.

The JS bloat is likely the interactive stuff in my "/library" and it's been on my to-do list to fix this. Thanks for this nudge, too.

whatrocks··on Notes on Stanford Linear Accelerator Center
Whoops! Fixed. Thank you for catching.
whatrocks··on You and Your Research (1986)
A favorite of mine! My friend Oz (of teachyourselfcs.com) and I chatted about this talk in the first episode of our show - focusing on how Oz has seen its influence and impact on the early/mid-career software engineers he's taught: https://show.csprimer.com/episodes/e1-doing-meaningful-work
whatrocks··on Knots to Narnia – Bill Thurston (1992) [video]
Loved this. I did want to see it keep going beyond the trefoil! This is tempting me to figure out a VR setup so I can try the VR demo.
whatrocks··on I wrote a short story about the end of software engineering
Ah, I'm sorry to hear about this issue. I have not encountered it myself nor have I heard about others facing it before. Do you have any suggestions on what I might need to adjust in Cloudflare settings? My SSL/TLS settings have not changed in a very long time. Thanks!
whatrocks··on I wrote a short story about trying to mine a diamond asteroid
Yeah! I felt squishy about the asteroid size, too. I really just wanted to say “Dodge Durango-sized” TBH, but was definitely concerned it was too small. Another good catch / call-out! Thanks.
whatrocks··on I wrote a short story about trying to mine a diamond asteroid
Yeah, completely valid points and I accept the criticism / suggestions with open arms, so thank you! I learned a lot from your comment.

I was definitely stabbing into the dark with (and self-conscious about) the "distance" - how to make it close enough for curiosity but not outright danger.

Some of the laser + vacuum chunking details I was hopefully going to toss up to the somewhat unreliable (at least not fully informed) narrator, which I was definitely using as a crutch for not having better science details.

This is also part of a "write a short story every week for a year" project, so my research was definitely too limited. But maybe now I'll revisit it in 2023 with your suggestions. Thanks again!

whatrocks··on I wrote a short story about von Neumann probes
I use Logic and I barely understand it. I need to watch some YouTube videos!
whatrocks··on I wrote a short story about von Neumann probes
I just re-recorded that big pop at the beginning and re-uploaded. Hopefully that should fix things and sorry for the pop scare! Thanks again for the helpful advice and feedback.
whatrocks··on I wrote a short story about von Neumann probes
Great points. My mic literally dropped during the recording (I was sitting in my bed). I'll try to fix that now and re-upload it (up to this point, the only regular listeners have been my parents and occasionally my wife). Also, excellent call on the problem/game part of the story - I should rewrite that part. I've also been thinking about this story as the backstory to an iPhone game, so maybe I can make it more fun that way.
whatrocks··on I wrote a short story about von Neumann probes
This is definitely helpful. I am thinking about making this story into an iPhone game. Not sure there’s enough game mechanics to keep it fun yet, but maybe there’s something with the feed vs stuff with a timer?
whatrocks··on I wrote a short story about von Neumann probes
I was torn about whether or not to call them nybbles :)
