whatnotests2··on The Waterfall Model was a straw man argument from the beginning (2015)
Ah yes, the Agile Waterfall method. Lol
whatnotests2··on The Waterfall Model was a straw man argument from the beginning (2015)
> And personally I think in the occasional interminable "oh wouldn't it be wonderful if programmers were real engineers like architects" threads, where people fail to understand those processes used by other engineering disciplines are contingent based on the nature of their work rather than abstract Platonic ideals all should strive for, and those other disciplines would love to work with continuous integration servers and automated testing and strongly-typed components, there are a lot of developers that believe even today that if we just tried hard enough, waterfall could not only work but be the optimal design methodology, and it is we who are failing waterfall rather than the other way around.

You captured so much in this one sentence, especially the end, about how waterfall failed the developer, rather than the developer having failed waterfall.

This script-flip works on many other systematized orthodoxies, I suspect.

whatnotests2··on Ask HN: Does anyone use sound effects in their dev environment?
This actually sounds like fun.

A lot less "Las Vegas video slots parlor" because of the randomness.

whatnotests2··on Ask HN: Does anyone use sound effects in their dev environment?
Yes, this.

Imagine an elevator, gas pump, vending machine, or laundromat emitting sound effects constantly.

Quite the dystopian hellscape.

whatnotests2··on [dead]
People look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them to use paper and pencil, but that's enough for getting started.
whatnotests2··on $149 RISC-V Tablet Runs Ubuntu 24.04
Their laptop looks nice, too.

"You look lonely. I can fix that."

I know it's a long way off, but each day that passes brings us closer to this.

I imagine tools like this could be useful for spectrum disorder issues like recognizing emotional state, or improving conversational skills.

Also, the kinds of emotional experiences we can have in the context of dialog with another person are difficult to achieve on our own, so therapeutic opportunities and interpersonal skills building could be valuable options there as well.

whatnotests2··on Blazor – Build full-stack web apps in .NET and C# without writing JavaScript
Blazer looks a lot like Sveltekit, IMO

Good to do your part fighting the expansion of WrongThink.

whatnotests2··on Arrest of Pavel Durov, Telegram CEO, charges of terrorism, fraud, child porn
Like, say, whistle blowers, and journalists who speak out and reveal evidence of government crimes? Like Julian Assange and Edward Snowden?
whatnotests2··on Arrest of Pavel Durov, Telegram CEO, charges of terrorism, fraud, child porn
The old "enemy of the people" argument.

Ok, like selling gasoline to the getaway car driver?
whatnotests2··on If someone designed us, they sure weren't intelligent
Your fingertips and nostrils are the same size.

Coincidence??

LOL.

Evolution leaves evidence of many things that, at one point in time, under different circumstances, were a great adaptation, but no longer are.

Culture, the mind, our emotions, and even the reciprocal interplay of our organs and the microbiome show a long history of adaptations to situations which are long gone.

That's enough evidence for me against Intelligent Design.

whatnotests2··on Telegram founder Pavel Durov arrested at French airport
Is this real?
whatnotests2··on Tabulator: Spreadsheet-like datatables in Vanilla JavaScript
Amazing.

I could see this getting deployed within a Sveltekit, htmx, or HOTWire web application, and reducing my workload by a great deal.

Replacing teachers with AI today.

Replacing schools with prison camps tomorrow.

So much for build back better.

Always enough money for war and weapons, while the infrastructure, education, and health systems disintegrate.

whatnotests2··on I Want to Escape College
It's not the education, but the network you acquire. Hang in there. You are not the only person who feels disillusioned.

Take up activities related to other interests, if you have any that are not self destructive.

Avoid self destructive people like the plague.

My old man advice.

whatnotests2··on It's Not Just You. No One Wants Kids Anymore [video]
I want kids, but would not raise them in America.
whatnotests2··on The Complex Relationship Between ADHD, Autism, and Personality Disorders
Thank you for making such a well thought out comment. Describing ASD/ADHD and NPD/BPD as extremes on different axes, and relating that extremity to facets of their behavior, especially with regard to cults, is brilliant.
whatnotests2··on Finite State Machine Designer
Hmm doesn't appear on android mobile chrome. I just see a white square where the designer should appear.
whatnotests2··on Starting an AI Company: Svelte or React
Chances of it blowing up are near-zero, statistically.

Use what you like. Svelte makes some things easier.

Sveltekit is full stack, and with drizzle-orm, zod, and superforms you've got a great start.

whatnotests2··on Ask HN: Resources for Describing Frameworks vs. Libraries?
It's simple:

* your code calls libraries.

* frameworks call your code.

whatnotests2··on Ask HN: Possible to launch parked domains in a single container?
Yes. Totally no problem.

Nginx as reverse proxy is good.

Rendering different thongs based on the domain is not an issue. Either have multiple "server" blocks in your nginx config which point to different React apps, or have a single React app that just renders different things based on the hostname.

YouTube.

Meditate.

Shower.
