I dont know what you guys expect. Its an opportunity to learn at $10-$20 a course. Yeah a course can be bad, but so can a book.

The sales part is definitely dishonest, but as far as people who make content, if they get more $$ on youtube, why dont they post on youtube?

whatitdobooboo··on On Design Thinking
Good article. I think a lot of times, including with myself, design is used as a "hack" to somehow skips steps. It's not like IDEO had to design the whole mac, or design how the FIRST mouse would work, or the wiring, or the bluetooth. They had these tools and had to put them together, with already. If there is a goal way too far out and "design" is supposed to get you there, I would guess there will be a lot of speedbumps on the way.

Was the iPhone design thought largely out of thin air? Or was it brought about by people who understood and worked the the technology for years and that is what drove the design focus?

A great, great podcast on the whole Nintendo/Sony early saga is:

Business Wars -> Nintendo vs Sony series

Highly recommend.

whatitdobooboo··on Ask HN: What are some books where the reader learns by building projects?
Just going by description and the "red book" it seems like its Auto Mechanics Fundamentals:

>>> "It is the aim of Auto Mechanics Fundamentals to provide a thorough understanding of the design, construction and operation of automotive units. Each unit is approached by starting with basic theory, then parts are added until the unit is complete. By following this procedure, the function of each unit is explained, and its relationship to the complete car is made clear. Hundreds of illustrations were drawn especially for this text. Important areas are featured in these drawings, and many are exaggerated to place emphasis on parts being discussed. Unfamiliar words are defined immediately following the words. In addition, the Dictionary of Terms in the back of the book defines more than 1,100 terms..."

(This one is blue but there is another version in red)

whatitdobooboo··on Alphabet earnings show Google Cloud on $10B run rate
Interesting viewpoint - also achieving profit through massive scale is their DNA as well I would say.

Still though, enterprise is a tough domain in my experience, AWS did a great job

whatitdobooboo··on Alphabet earnings show Google Cloud on $10B run rate
I agree, Google is not enterprise focused as far as I can tell. Microsoft is and that why Azure has been able to do so well so quickly.

It's impressive to me that Amazon was able to shift focus to AWS without much existing presence in enterprise tech stacks.

whatitdobooboo··on Mathematicians prove universal law of turbulence
I see, very helpful, thanks. But doesn't this leave room for what you potentially have not accounted for? I am just trying to wrap my head around how one can write a proof by saying something doesn't occur
whatitdobooboo··on Mathematicians prove universal law of turbulence
Not too well on mathematical proofs, but to me this sounds like the "proved" something by not being able to disprove Batchelor's law?

Also, the part about randomness makes sense in theory but the jump to an actual proof seems a little wide to me.

Are many mathematical laws proved in this way?

whatitdobooboo··on Ask HN: What Skills to Acquire in 2020?
Journaling every night - journal about anything - just write
whatitdobooboo··on Tech salaries are risk premiums

whatitdobooboo··on Amazon appears to be tracking every tap on Kindle
I would guess though that even in the bucket of data privacy, kindle taps rank pretty low, no?
whatitdobooboo··on Amazon appears to be tracking every tap on Kindle
Does this really matter? Maybe I'm missing something?
whatitdobooboo··on Google App Maker Shutting Down
This might be good in the grand scheme of things, as google matures they might feel the need to focus heavily on a few products rather than just try many.

Also initially i dont think anyone built their company on google infrastructure, so these products had a different mindset when made.

whatitdobooboo··on What DoorDash pays, after expenses, and what’s happening with tips
Some valid points maybe but the article is a little misleading, bolding the $1.45 but then right after saying "after mileage and expenses."

Not sure what a company like doordash can do in that case, are all doordash drivers driving fuel efficient cars?

Also, what factors in is that many people cannot afford cars that are in good shape.

Tips aspect is inexcusable, however.

whatitdobooboo··on The End of the Beginning
I think if you abstract away the specific companies mentioned and stuck to the technology, the point about people building on top of already "accepted" paradigms is a good one, in my opinion.

The rest doesn't really seem to have enough evidence for such a bold claim.

whatitdobooboo··on Thousands of Google’s cafeteria workers have unionized
lolll I did think that they were joking
whatitdobooboo··on Ask HN: What are your news sources other than HN?
Financial Times is great! Not worth the price if you dont split it with others, though.
whatitdobooboo··on What Is the Most Valuable Thing You Can Learn in One Hour?
Extremely basic design principles
whatitdobooboo··on Ask HN: Good solution for storing notes/excerpts from books?
I use evernote. It's really useful once you get used to tagging your notes.

I have a broad notebook called "Books" and then tag each post with relevant topics. As you continue to add to evernote in other domains with similar tags you can aggregate all the information into one place.

You can even make a tag of the bookname and go from there.

Bear is a cheaper alternative but i personally didn't like it too much.

whatitdobooboo··on Thousands of Google’s cafeteria workers have unionized
Does anyone have any good/neutral book recommendations on unionization?
whatitdobooboo··on Electric Cars Threaten the Heart of Germany’s Economy
It's hard to replace such a manufacturing oriented work culture in any country, especially one revolving around cars in general. I think Germany will be fine, it's still early.
whatitdobooboo··on The Rise of the Architectural Cult
The article seems a little sensationalist to me, but some interesting points. (I am not an architect)

"The Bauhaus offered young people a complete and simplistic worldview with every detail filled in, and a sacred cause that provided emotional and spiritual fulfillment."

I would argue that rather than nefarious motives guiding cookie-cutter designs its a lot of economics and fear of making a bad decision. This isn't really unique to Architecture, but architecture is much more visible and permanent than say a Dell Laptop.

Also it doesn't really offer a solution...but awareness is always good

whatitdobooboo··on The old internet died and we watched and did nothing
I've heard that less new websites and blogs are actually bad for large services like google in terms of their search product
whatitdobooboo··on Ask HN: Best book to gift someone for getting into software engineering?
If there is anything on a separate subject that you feel relates closely to software engineering might be useful. Personally I found software engineering boring until I saw how it could be used in other industries
whatitdobooboo··on Google Brass Set 2023 as Deadline to Beat Amazon, Microsoft in Cloud
Bringing in an Oracle exec to run it seems pretty ill-advised. Oracle is a services company of the past - GCP needs to be a services company of the future as cliche as that is.

The tech is there - but alignment isnt. I dont know if Google is capable of anything outside of search.

whatitdobooboo··on Google Brass Set 2023 as Deadline to Beat Amazon, Microsoft in Cloud
Google* isnt really an enterprise focused company. Getting talent and management to work on it must be tough, and internally I've heard it is sort of looked down on. They have a pretty poor partner network as well. I think if they beefed that up theyd do well.
