My theory is that every Sci Fi author has their own sort of pet belief they like to expose on their novels. So I get it, this is his. But every time it came up on his books I couldn't help and roll my eyes at what I knew would be a long, unnecessary, mostly off topic diatribe about the benefits of polygamy.
The problem is that not everybody does, or want to do that. Teenagers, for example, are highly influenceable (sp?) but their peers, so they get controlled by social media rather than the other way around. Same with people following celebrities/influencers. It's easy to build a collective consciousness that people compare themselves too, to their loss.
Maybe they have grand academic visions and papers, but I've been using them for well over a decade and I feel the client quality has gone downhill over the past few years. They keep adding unnecessary stuff like a redundant file browser while the core service suffers.
Too many people blocking that script. I have about 20 different sites using it that I manage in some form bit cannot couch for it anymore.
I didn't know much about it, and wow, sounds really terrible. I can even see it as an idea that started with good intentions, but the use cases explained (like linking floc ids to user ids in websites you signed in and potentially exposing browsing habits) make this thing really invasive; the whole idea is broken.
Don't remember where I read this (twitter?) but it feels so true. Sure you can get a better chair arrangement with enough effort, but it doesn't matter since the boat is sinking.
No one should sell themselves short, but choosing, say, a 100% worse environment or a dead-end technology stack for a 5% higher pay (or whatever) is not wise.
We need to stop idolizing hustling. Getting shit done without pretending it's a gambler's game will get you far.
Was thinking something along the same lines. I work in an environment where a tiny bit of self initiative does very well for one's work and career, and still some people can't get it over their heads. Unless something is very clearly stated somewhere, they won't do it no matter how obvious it is, even people who are trying to get a promotion. I swear sometimes I think people would let the office burn because "yelling fire!" is not of their stated position responsibilities.
You use a subjective opinion on one unit's range as a proxy for all other units. How is the meter (cm, mm, km, etc) trash compared to the foot (inch, yard, mile, etc)? They're objectively better in every regard, not just for scientific purposes but in everyday life.
Come to think of it, it's the first time I'm seeing someone making that sort of statement rather than the usual "it's too difficult to change now" excuse.
It was "doable" in the sense that I didn't sleepwalk into traffic, but in the end my performance both at work and at school was terrible. It was a waste.
It's somewhat fine if you're doing rote work, which I assume these people are doing, but little else.
The media around the topic is too focused on heroics, as if this is a puzzle with a nifty solution that only someone thinking outside of the box can come up with. Reality is less elegant.
