whackedspinach··on Intel Reveals Post-8th Gen. Core Architecture 10nm+ Ice Lake
Here is the talk a few years later: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KL-I3-C-KBk
whackedspinach··on BOINC – Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing
Wow, I didn't know BOINC had GPU support. I hate running an AWS GPU instance due to the cost, so I wonder if BOINC is an eventual solution.
whackedspinach··on The Death of the Cyberflâneur
Please go back in time and invent this program. I definitely need to stop mainlining SSC.
whackedspinach··on Urbit crowdsale is now live
What is the benefit of owning a star right now? Why is owning a star better than a planet?
whackedspinach··on Ford and Google Move Forward Together Towards Consumer Self-Driving Cars
Researchers are working on this in Michigan. The University of Michigan has a new MCity test facility[0], and I know one of the projects they are working on is how the cars handle snow. They basically still do LIDAR and match the z-plane (height of objects nearby) to localize the car when road markings are hard to see.

Still lots of work to do though!

whackedspinach··on Coffee drinking linked to lower mortality risk again
The benefits stated in the study seem to be present for both regular and decaf coffee, so if you like it, maybe seem if decaf suits you better.
whackedspinach··on Mark Zuckerberg Will Take Two Months Off from Facebook for Paternity Leave
Yes, it is odd for someone to not take full paternity leave. See this article where Boz talks about it: http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-parental-leave-polic...
whackedspinach··on The Most Important Thing: Decline in poverty, illiteracy and disease
Well an easy answer is to take a lot of that money people are earning in technology (I'm talking personal income or gifts from companies) and put it towards programs that either work towards ending poverty in those cases (through economic development, direct cash grants, etc) or improving health conditions, which often helps.

Some possibilities (although there are many others): http://www.givewell.org/charities/top-charities

If you have a novel approach using technology, you should pursue it, but don't let a lack of a technological solution prevent you from doing anything right now.

whackedspinach··on Federal law enforcement documents about Aaron Swartz, released under FOIA
I received one of these when I submitted FOIA on myself.
whackedspinach··on Show HN: Generate interactive heatmaps from your Google Location History data
How much data do most people have? The page seems to be struggling to process my ~83MB.
whackedspinach··on Building an API in 60 seconds, without any server setup
Do you run the scripts as a specific user inside the container then? I was under the impression that running untrusted code in Docker as UID 0 was not yet safe.
whackedspinach··on Building an API in 60 seconds, without any server setup
Paul,

How are you securing the Docker containers since Docker hasn't yet added user namespaces?

whackedspinach··on Google Glass evangelist: It's not worth the headache
Hey, just to provide a counterexample: I wear Glass a lot and don't experience headaches. I also wear glasses all the time. I really enjoy the technology, and I just wanted to say it might be a person-specific factor that makes Glass cause headaches, if it does.
whackedspinach··on Through a Face Scanner Darkly
Laws may help some, but I worry that as devices get smaller and computers are integrated into everything, they won't be able to protect us for long. Ubiquitous computing may (in the next decade or two) actually obsolete any expectation of privacy. We need to start acting as if every digital device nearby is reporting information about us, because most of those devices will soon have that capability.

In that case, I hope (1) is the outcome.

whackedspinach··on 404 - File not found
We read Hacker News and Reddit too. I just wish we had something better to offer than a 404 page.
whackedspinach··on 404 - File not found
ACM@UIUC has had it up since at least 2003. I haven't found an earlier version yet.
whackedspinach··on Silicon Valley 40 under 40: Garry Tan
Garry is awesome.
whackedspinach··on Show HN: Bitroad – Sell anything online for Bitcoin
Is it possible to use Bitcoin or a bitcoin-like system to create listings in a decentralized manner? Maybe with Namecoin?

I worry that these types of sites centralize the marketplace in one easy-to-attack location.

whackedspinach··on Meet the BRCK
This was originally a Kickstarter project back in June: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1776324009/brck-your-bac...
whackedspinach··on I'm the guy who bought 259684 Bitcoins for under $3000 yesterday (2011)
Correct. A cold storage scheme might be private keys printed on paper and stored in a safety deposit box, for example. Then, if their network is compromised, they won't lose everything.

Not sure how much exchanges normally keep in their "hot wallets", but I've heard numbers from 10%-30%. If an exchange is hacked and decides to close and go under, they can also use cold storage to send some percentage of user's balances back to them.

whackedspinach··on Bitcoin approaching $1000
You just buy less BTC, I suppose.
whackedspinach··on The Faces of Facebook – Visualizing 1.2 billion Facebook profile images
The number on this site refers to the profile picture. Some people have multiple profile pictures over time, and some have deleted their account, etc. Example: Zuck is 1 on this page but his FBID is 4.
whackedspinach··on Strangeloop 2013 slides
I'd love access as a student, but I'd only pay around $30-$40 for all of them. More than that, and I'd probably just wait until they were public.
whackedspinach··on Critical Vulnerability in Cryptocat
I would be careful before trying this. I don't know much about crypto, but you might be able to do some interesting statistical attacks if you are encrypting the same plaintext with multiple keys.
whackedspinach··on Algorithms Course Materials
I am so excited to take this class. JeffE, from all accounts, is an amazing professor.
whackedspinach··on Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox taken down for hours by ‘another strong DDoS attack’
An idea for this has been proposed. See the "ripple currency exchange":

whackedspinach··on Sex Machine: Get gender from first name in Ruby
This is exactly what I am looking for! I run a tech conference and am interested in seeing what percentage of our attendees are male or female. I only have names for historical data, so this should help give a somewhat close approximation of sex!
whackedspinach··on Rape Case Solved By Anonymous in Less Than 2 Hours Despite "No Evidence"
What rules do they have to follow? It sounds like they were contacted by the witnesses.
whackedspinach··on Don't be an entrepredouche
"We're smarter than them. We ought to be able to extract some use from them."

Who are the pretentious ones again?

whackedspinach··on Hello from a libc-free world
Is it still "Hello, world!" if that is never printed to the screen?
