whackedspinach··on Ask HN: Please critique backscatter argument
This is exactly what I have been saying. I don't really understand why no one thinks this is a problem. I remember asking my mother as a kid why they were allowed to do that (having learned my Bill of Rights). She's a prosecutor, so I figured she knows the law. she said (and still does) that it is all there for our protection. If I was going to blow something up, I'd use a bus, train, or even the security line at the airport. Why bother with getting through security?

I'm not sure about international travel, but searches for domestic flights are unconstitutional.

Now, how do we effectively fight that?

whackedspinach··on The quest for freedom and safety: Why I donated $100,000 to YesOn19
I have been saying for a while that we should just legalize all drugs, for excalty the same reasons outlined in Paul's post. I don't care what people do to their own bodies as long as it isn't harming anyone else. However, I can see a lot of anti-drug organizations and charities popping up to educate people on the dangers of heroin, etc. Hopefully that will give us the maximum freedom while also providing some good drug education to reduce the amount of heavy drug addictions.
whackedspinach··on Offer HN: I'll help you learn Python
I've been teaching myself python for a while, and I just built my first Django site. It works fine in runserver, but I'm having trouble deploying it. Is anyone (OP or otherwise) willing to help me understand how to go about doing that? I could really use some help.
whackedspinach··on Mark Zuckerberg on What Hollywood Doesn't Get About Silicon Valley
Did anyone else see that movie and feel that this had been portrayed? The Zuckerberg in the movie obviously wanted to be part of the social group, but I also got that 'building' vibe. Maybe it is just because I compared the entire movie to The Fountainhead.
whackedspinach··on Offer HN: Ex-Ivy League admission officer will review your college application
I sent you an email with my application attached. If you respond I will post or summarize it on my blog with a link here. After seeing those web copy slides the other day, I believe this advice can help anyone.
whackedspinach··on Stay up late while you can. It pays off
Psh, everyone at my school thinks it's crazy that I stay up until 2 or 3 in the morning. That's when all of my best work gets done.
whackedspinach··on Benoit Mandelbrot, RIP
This is so odd. I just gave a quick presentation on him yesterday in theology class. The prompt was to "Use you creative genius to show God in a visual manner." I argued that we couldn't describe God in finite terms, so I used fractals because of their infinite detail. Much better response from the class than collages of waterfalls and sunsets. And now that I think about it, fractals came up in my Physics class too. My teacher was describing a talk he gave at Wolfram Research on the subject.

And then Benoit Mandelbrot died yesterday. Very odd coincidence. Rest in peace, Mr. Mandelbrot.

whackedspinach··on Ask HN: Who to follow (Twitter) for good code?
Example in a stream: http://twitter.com/#!/colegleason Example as independent tweet: http://twitter.com/#!/colegleason/status/26719075299

I suppose you can't see it if you don't have the new interface though.

whackedspinach··on Ask HN: Who to follow (Twitter) for good code?
If you post a tweet with a link to a Gist on the new Twitter interface, you can just click the tweet to see the Gist in the right pane. I imagine it would be nice to see a person's stream with the tweets on the left and a gist in the right. Especially if it was a daily code tip account.
whackedspinach··on Facebook Overhauls Groups, A Social Solution To Create “A Pristine Graph”
Has anyone seen new API features for these new groups? I want to write a script to pull members from old groups (already possible), and then add them to one of these new groups. They seem more useful, but I don't want to deal with adding 100+ people to the new group.
whackedspinach··on Ask HN: Explain to non-techies what you do: Programmer? Developer? Engineer?
I don't know if this is strictly American though. In Italy, people are often referred to by their professional titles. We do that with doctors here, but they would say the equivalent of "Lawyer Smith" or "Engineer Jones".

I only know this from studying the language. I have never been to Italy, so correct me if I am wrong.

whackedspinach··on Ask HN: What's your favorite window manager for X11?
I didn't even realize awesome wasn't in the Arch Linux repositories any more. I installed it from there a month ago.
whackedspinach··on Ask HN: What's your favorite window manager for X11?
I use Awesome WM. It was my first foray into the tiling WM world, and I am currently loving it. I have two monitors. I usually have whatever main task I'm working with on my main widescreen, and then a bunch of terminals with various programs (ncmpcpp, irssi, etc) on my old 17 inch monitor.

Awesome is great because of its use of the keyboard and tag system. Also, it is named after one of Barney Stinson's catchphrases.

whackedspinach··on Rumpetroll - a new Websockets/HTML5/CSS3/JS experiment
Ha, I love the idea, but I have no idea how it would be implemented. If you want to make it, go ahead. I'm sure a lot of people would be interested. I'll come back once I understand how the internet works.
whackedspinach··on Rumpetroll - a new Websockets/HTML5/CSS3/JS experiment
I'm not sure how 'useful' it would be, but what if you could overlay this on any web page you wanted, like that asteroids bookmarklet from yesterday. You could have the option to turn it on or off. Kind of an ability to see some real time comments overlay on articles or something. Or just a way to 'hang out' on the HN homepage. Each webpage would have it's own room. It would be like creating an instant chat overlay on the page.

I just feel like this would add a whole new dimension to the web. It's kind of like WoW back when I played. Each region/city has their own chat zone. I spend too much time just browsing random articles, it would be nice to start up some conversations that aren't as formal as comments (not logged, realtime, etc).

whackedspinach··on Ask HN: Am I the only one who's not in love with Google Instant?
I like it for certain searches. If I'm trying to debug something, putting in the full error message doesn't always help. I start typing in part of it though, and I may get someone with a similar, but not exact issue. so it's useful for things like that. But if I know what I'm looking for, I can just as easily use the Chromium address bar.
whackedspinach··on The Higher Education Bubble: It's About to Burst
Comment on story: "Government schools are very expensive and normal people can't bear their expenses. I suggest that government should give some relief to the students" I'm no economist, but isn't that similar to being able to get easy credit? If the government is giving out more federal aid, the schools can keep (or even raise) these high prices. I don't know the solution for this bubble, but just throwing money at it doesn't seem like the solution to me.
whackedspinach··on Arcade Fire meets HTML5
Note to Google: I know the users of tiling window managers and multiple screens are a small subset of your users, but I happen to be in both. Please don't use pop-ups. I like Arcade Fire too!
whackedspinach··on Ask HN: How do you start programming?
Thanks. I have noticed that any time I have a question related to programming, there is almost always an answer on stackoverflow.com.
whackedspinach··on Ask HN: How do you start programming?
A Twitter client is interesting. I might just try that. I haven't really settled on any language. I have books on Python and Ruby, and I've recently become interested in Haskell. But it seems like you can do almost anything with any language (maybe not efficiently). I figure I'll learn the mindset of programming, and then concentrate on different languages.
whackedspinach··on Punk Mathematics
These kind of "cool" textbooks really interest me. I wonder if it would be comparable to something like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whys_(poignant)_Guide_to_Ruby.
