whackedspinach··on Django on Heroku running with Celery
Are there any drawbacks to this? I've been looking for a "Heroku for Django" for a few months and I just started using Google App Engine to get some of what I want. I'll go ahead and try this if it works well.
whackedspinach··on This Guy Has My MacBook, Caught by Police

The laptop's return was the culmination of a one-man crusade of online
sleuthing, social networking and moments of voyeuristic creepiness
aided by the software called Hidden.
This appears to be the software that got the job done: http://hiddenapp.com/

Nothing better than a viral success story to generate press for an app like this.

whackedspinach··on Previewing Windows 8 (Video)
This is great. I've been waiting for a while to see some sort of good desktop UI that got away from the classic icons + sidebar widgets design. While this provides the same functionality, it gives the user a lot more information at a glance, plus it looks nicer (IMO).

I really hope that store becomes some sort of primary distribution channel. After using Linux for so long, I've become so used to repositories that it makes me cringe to go find some obscure nagware application when ever I need to get something done on Windows.

whackedspinach··on Challenge HN: build pg-bot
I know it isn't exactly what you are suggesting, but I intend to double major in Math and CS and possibly get a minor in Italian.
whackedspinach··on Challenge HN: build pg-bot
I just graduated, and am also going into Computer Science. I just pulled up a list of top CS schools and started researching from there. I ended up applying to MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, Caltech, U of Illinois UC, U of Michigan, and a few others. I only got into U of Illinois UC, but I'm happy with that and am excited for next year.

My advice: Apply to where you really want to go. The money is something that you can work out if you try hard enough. don't be afraid to reach for the top tier of schools, but don't leave yourself with no fallbacks.

whackedspinach··on Top Programming Fonts

Droid Sans Mono makes for a great programming font. It’s got a bit of flair,
and stands out among the other monospace fonts I’ve listed, and its only
real flaw is the lack of a slashed zero.
I use Droid Sans Mono with slashed zeros on my Arch Linux box. I find that I can get it up to a rather large font size (I don't see well) and it still looks really good.

whackedspinach··on news:yc (iPhone HN client) finally accepted into the App Store
As a high school student (well, graduate tomorrow!) who is interested in designing mobile applications, I would really be interested in reading about your experience building this app. Not only the design and code, but the release and launch, if you don't mind.

I just bought the app and it's great! Keep up the good work!

EDIT: Just one little quirk I've noticed. The comment test is really small (I'm visually impaired and already hold the phone a few inches from my face). While I can read it, could you give us an option to increase it at some point in the future?

whackedspinach··on C is a Wasteland
Suggesting that a cleaner/simpler syntax should be used doesn't mean he wants to code in Ruby/Python. They have plenty of their own flaws. He just admires their syntax since it is very readable.
whackedspinach··on 2-D Glasses
I did when I say it on April 1st. I have a family member that hates them and we almost always have to go to 2D movies because of it. Now I can drag him to a 3D movie!
whackedspinach··on 2-D Glasses
It's an April Fools Joke.
whackedspinach··on Ask HN: I have so many ideas and not enough time
I have the opposite problem. I have too much time and nothing to work on. I just have "idea block". Whenever I do come up with something good, I google it and it is already there with a better design and a head start. Where do you get the creative spark? The ideas? I need some help.
whackedspinach··on Online Cash Bitcoin could Challenge Governments, Banks
I'd like to see them raid every single Bitcoin user worldwide, which is how I think it would have to happen in order to shut it down.

Actually, they would probably only need to raid a substantial amount (maybe half?) in order to control the block chain.

whackedspinach··on FBI seized PokerStars.com, FullTiltPoker.com, UB.com,... domain names
How exactly am I supposed to live in a system like this? I understand I can't have a perfect legal system, but the amount of effort required to challenge these ridiculous seizures seems very difficult. There are so many unconstitutional laws that need to be fixed. We need a second supreme court.
whackedspinach··on Please tell us what features you'd like in news.ycombinator
A lot of the time I will go to hacker news and quickly scan article titles for something interesting. While I know the mods try to change titles to be more descriptive, some things are just ambiguous. Right now there is an article called "A Rare Disagreement" on the front page. Now that could be about anything, and I don't know if I really want to spend my time on it. Can we add a little box on the submit form for an excerpt/summary that would appear on hover? Or maybe a little down arrow that you could click to expand the summary? Limit it to 150-300 characters and it could be a great improvement to the front page.
whackedspinach··on The blind man who taught himself to see
Is it possible to learn echolocation without being blind? as a kid, my doctors were worried my deteriorating vision would leave me blind, so I learned Braille (that never happened). I wonder if I could have learned this skill with vision (if your auditory senses weren't compensating for loss of sight).
whackedspinach··on Rate my startup - Slowcop - measure your website's speed
the suggestions are really nice, but can you eventually link to tutorials for those of us who need a bit of help?

For example, under "Minify CSS", you could say: "Need help? Here's a CSS compression tool."

whackedspinach··on Nerd Fort
How does coworking work? Is that someplace where you could leave your desktop, or do people just bring laptops in?
whackedspinach··on Ask HN: With college, should I go big or cheap?
I live in the Chicago suburbs, so it is in the same state, but not "local".
whackedspinach··on Character & Fitness Fail for Law Graduate With ‘No Plan’ To Pay Off His Debts
Why is the C&F section even on the test? I thought you had to have no character to be a lawyer.
whackedspinach··on My winter break project — Silk
I can't seem to get the shift+mouse to control the wind to work using Chromium on Linux.
whackedspinach··on 7-inch pocket gaming concept blows our minds six ways from Sunday
I actually use a Logitech G5 mouse and a Logitech G15 keyboard and I love them both. The mouse has a really nice rubber feel, adjustable weight (which is actually a nifty thing once you realize how much that weight matters), and some really nice side buttons.

Not that Razer is bad. I used to have one of their keyboards and I liked that as well.

whackedspinach··on Technologies That Will Rock 2011
I know this is all mostly software, seeing as it is techcrunch, but what about hardware?

Isn't Lightpeak coming out this year? I feel like that will be a big deal.

whackedspinach··on Mirrored display face-to-face pair programming setup
I'm not sure I understand the concept of pair programming. It seems to me that the keyboard clashes, while able to be avoided, would be rather annoying and be less efficient. I could see collaborative editors working out much better. What does the second programmer do while the first one is writing code
whackedspinach··on Be a Good Jedi: Build Your Own Blog
I've done this. It isn't really fancy or complicated. It was the first thing I built with Django (My first web app actually!). It isn't done yet, as I still have to add syntax highlighting and better Textile support. Also, I currently add posts using a script instead of a web GUI, so that could be added. Also, I suppose I could add comments, but I just don't care much for them (on the page I mean). Maybe just a link to a Disqus thread...Defiantly do it. It isn't hard, and it is a great learning experience.
whackedspinach··on "Save a tree" with the WWF's new unprintable "green" PDF format
Anyone who sends me a file in this format is going to be ignored. I have seen stupid DRM, but this is ridiculous.
whackedspinach··on Ask HN: Sharing all my startup ideas
I was thinking about this last night. We should start an HNideas site. Similar layout to HN, add in some areas for suggestions, maybe a button to try and form a team. It wouldn't be too hard. Maybe I'll do that tonight...
whackedspinach··on Ask HN: Hosting personal site on a VPS, or in the cloud?
I'm currently setting up an EC2 instance to serve up my personal site using this free tier. I just need to figure out how all of this domain level stuff works.
whackedspinach··on Ask HN: Any good math jokes?
I saw that, but in the end some of the images are only about 700x400 px. At 200 ppi (which is what t shirts should be printed at, I guess), that just isn't a high enough resolution. And I'm not sure If I really want to make it larger since it will not look all that good.
whackedspinach··on Ask HN: What are you reading right now?
I'm also currently reading Godel, Escher, Bach. Simultaneously, I'm reading Coders at Work, which I am going to follow up with Founders at Work and Hackers & Painters by pg.
whackedspinach··on Remind HN: Vote
I am not old enough to vote yet, but I did spend 15 hours today as an election judge. While I felt that there was a decent turnout for our precinct, I did not see as many young people as I expected. There were a lot of elderly people that showed up, including some that had so much trouble completing the ballot that they may have been better off with an absentee ballot. I saw a few first-time/young voters, but I just don't think many of them feel this election is important because it is not a presidential election.

Get out there and vote next time, kids.
