weystrom··on Open-Sourcing our Firmware
I wish they'd ship US ANSI keyboard in Europe, I would totally pick one up.
weystrom··on Computers as I used to love them
I have a VPS in Digitalocean that's running syncthing ever since Untrusted Enrypted Storage[1] has been introduced last year.

It's great, it's even better than cloud storage, since the VPS never has access to the encryption key.

weystrom··on Show HN: Get the guitar chords from your Spotify playlists
UltimateGuitar is so pushy with their ads and subscriptions, it's a crime.

Neat shortcut though. Thanks for the effort.

weystrom··on Walmart pulls children's toy that swears and sings in Polish about doing cocaine
I wonder if somewhere there's one bored Polish electrical engineer who's laughing his ass off right now.
weystrom··on How I got wealthy without working too hard
Sooo, the article skips the biggest question: How the hell do you find a $1000/day contracts?
weystrom··on The next generation of AirPods
In the press release Apple talks about AAC-ELD codec being included on these earbuds, promising high-def low-latency audio.

I wonder if that's true. My biggest gripe with the industry ever since the death of 3.5mm jack has been voice/video call audio quality on BT HSP profile.

It's probably just a marketing blurb, but whoever manages to fix BT voice audio will be my personal hero.

weystrom··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
So I was looking for an alternative and bought Lenovo Yoga Slim 7. Ryzen 5800H with 90Hz 1440p screen.

It runs loud af, fan is constantly pulsing, but it's an alright machine for ~1200eu.

It's now going on ebay to fund the mbp purchase, I want better thermals out of my laptop.

weystrom··on Leaving the Apple ecosystem behind
I've tried to switch to Linux multiple times. Something is always broken.

Primary example is hidpi support. My laptop has a 1440p screen and I use a 1080p external one. And then sometimes I disconnect it and go into a meeting room or something to work without an external display.

I set 200% scaling for laptop screen when I'm at the desk and 150% when I'm out and about.

Simple usecase, but I've never managed to make it work properly and consistently. It's been like that for the last 3 years. I just keep coming back to Windows where it works perfectly.

Wayland keeps getting better, but some important apps don't support it yet. For example there IS a build of VSCode that works on Wayland, but it freezes up if you move the window between displays with scaling on.

And then there is KDE wayland session, that still loves to crash if you pull out the second screen DP cable "wrong".

Linux is not there yet, and honestly, I'm not sure if it will ever be. It might me destined to forever play catch-up with the "big-tech" OSes.

On top of that, how do you even beat the level of vertical integration that Apple has with M1 chips and MacOS?

weystrom··on Show HN: Paper to HTML Converter
When are, as people, are going to ditch PDF? It's an awful format.

My friend wrote his PHD in Latex, but it all ends up being PDFed anyway for what, eye candy?

It's time to move on. #ditchpdf

weystrom··on Police helicopter's 100mph chase with 'super sophisticated' drone near Tucson
I fly FPV drones too and the batteries suck and this thing seemed to have 40+ minutes of flight time.

Even top of the DJI drones (which are not exactly freestyle/racy) would top out at around 30 minutes.

Not implying aliens, but I wish we had that kind of battery technology in my Nazgul5, if it's a drone they've seen.

weystrom··on Black Screen After MacBook Pro Update to macOS Big Sur
Or just use Windows with WSL2/Linux VM.
weystrom··on Black Screen After MacBook Pro Update to macOS Big Sur
Which Lenovo? The trackpad on my t480 is subpar to say the least.
weystrom··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
Yeah, I guess. I just don't understand how my 2015 retina mbp can support up to 4 displays (including the internal one), but this state-of-the-art-3x-gpu-performance chip can't do more than one.

This might be tied to some I/O limitation.

weystrom··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
I don't see people mentioning it here, but the Pro machine only supports one external display. People have called the sales rep to confirm and this is indeed the case.

This is kind of bad news for the Pro machine.

weystrom··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
Have the same machine, it's starting to chug. Modern web is too heavy for the old dualcore i5, unfortunately.
weystrom··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
So I get the whole performance-per-watt spiel, but if they're targeting the same 10W as with Ice Lake Y-series[1], it's gonna be hot during continuous workloads like screen sharing, since they've seemingly decided to get rid of even the "chassis fan" they've had on 2019 Air.

weystrom··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
If you look at the power supplies it's 30 vs 60 Watts, definitely interested to see what kind of TDP Apple targets with these machines.
weystrom··on Can't you just right click?
> If Apple continues to head in this direction, I think the right move is to migrate to Linux. Windows is a huge step back, as far as I'm concerned.

Linux desktop has so many hidden problems, especially on laptops, you're definitely better off going the Windows route, unless your time is free.

weystrom··on Firefox 75: Ambitions for April
Hardware video accelleration on Linux with Wayland! I've tested it on Youtube, it works alright, definitely less CPU usage, however on twitch.tv I still get some graphical glitches.
weystrom··on New MacBook Air
You're still limited by thermals, especially in such a thin machine
weystrom··on New MacBook Air
They better fix the cooling system though, last year Air had a passive system without a heatpipe between the CPU and system fan and people complained.

TDP seems to be a bit higher here, so let's see if they've managed to do something better than just blowing air (heh) into the chassis.

weystrom··on DuckDuckGo is good enough for regular use
I find myself using !g more than I'd like to, even before I even look at DDG results. I just don't seem to trust it with complex queries and go straight to google. But it has gotten better, that's true.

Side effect - I started using built-in Firefox wikipedia and Stackoverflow search way more, skipping DDG and Google altogether.

weystrom··on DuckDuckGo is good enough for regular use
So does Google, "Corpus Christi" is too ambiguous.

"Corpus Christi polish film" is good enough. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Corpus+Christi+polish+film&t=ffab&...

"Corpus Christi film" also works, results look relevant, but knowledge graph shows the old 2014 Venezuelan movie. This is where Google is way superior, it showed me average score on imdb and even local showtimes.

weystrom··on ThinkPad T480 is my new main laptop which runs FreeBSD
Can't wait for 9300 developer edition, going to pick it up hopefully very soon.
weystrom··on ThinkPad T480 is my new main laptop which runs FreeBSD
I have one at work and it's not, I ended up using my personal MBP13 instead.

Fan seems to struggle to dissipate even 25 watts of heat. Sometimes it would be sitting at 50+ degrees C, just idling.

I asked our IT guys if I can repaste it, but they told me it's still on warranty. It might help, but I'll never know I guess.

weystrom··on European parliament says it will not use facial recognition tech
> The story is about a leaked draft of a plan to introduce the same technology on the parliament itself

I did, and that's what I mean. They don't want it in the parliament and yet the subway station I use every day has facial recognition system in place, there is even a sign that says "it's for your safety". I'll believe in a ban when they'll take it down.

weystrom··on European parliament says it will not use facial recognition tech
As usual, politicians start to claim privacy rights when it comes to them, and yet this technology is already being tested throughout major European cities.

The hypocrisy is real.

weystrom··on MacBook Pro 16 Has a Fan Problem
It's the GPU. There's a huge thread on Apple's forums about fan noise with connected external display: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250878229
weystrom··on Cutting Google out of your life (2019)
RSS of my subscriptions into a youtube-dl script works well enough for me. You could also just watch YouTube with mpv.
weystrom··on The Pirate Bay is trialing high-quality video streaming
There are so many streaming providers right now, no wonder people are turning to torrents. It's almost easier UX-wise to set up Transmission and Plex once, than manage 5 sets of subscription, apps on all your devices and credentials to log into each one.

They will have to consolidate eventually, to keep the customers, or lose to piracy yet again.
