wewake··on Key Modi rival Rahul Gandhi among potential Indian targets of NSO client
This raises questions on the legitimacy of 2019 GE.
wewake··on Key Modi rival Rahul Gandhi among potential Indian targets of NSO client
FYI, considering your voluntary ignorance, BJP has bigger, broader and older dynasties than any other party in the whole country.

Don't forget the Rafael Deal too...

Study finds that 34% of humans are sick of stressful and exhausting daily commute to work.
wewake··on Tesla buys $1.5B in Bitcoin, may accept it as payment in the future
Highly irresponsible and foolish move but what else can you expect from him these days.
wewake··on Lost nuclear device atop of Nanda Devi
> Intestinal tract infections can kill you within days after a single gulp of polluted water.

Your point being? What do you think water treatment plants are for?

wewake··on Lost nuclear device atop of Nanda Devi
What's worse than radioactive isotopes that can't possibly be filtered out in conventional water treatment plants?

Pollution is an issue in majority of rivers in the world, especially in developing countries but doesn't justify or discount radioactive waste in there.

wewake··on Lost nuclear device atop of Nanda Devi
Last week, I went into the rabbit hole and researched about the whole incident as my drinking water comes from one of the tributaries of Ganga river and this device has polluted a source glacier of the river - with plutonium. Great.

One of the climbers, Jim McCarthy claimed he got cancer due to the time he spent in close proximity of the device and according to him, the local people who helped them in the trek are long dead because they spent much more time huddled close to the device. They were not cautioned about the dangers as the mission was "top secret".

When this story came to light back in 1978 after an article was published in a magazine and someone in US congress wrote a letter to the president, Indian govt. finally felt the need to assess the consequences of their blunder.

Researchers hypothesized that the device melted through the snow before reaching the mountain rock surface where it remains stuck to this day. They tested water samples from the river for a year or two while the story was hot and public pressure was on. Ideally, they should have continued periodic testing forever and annual search missions to locate the device.

Ummm.. no.
wewake··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Oh! I must have overlooked that option in settings. Thanks.
wewake··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Hi, another happy user here. I've been using it for about a year now and it has helped me to be more productive.

Not sure if you already know, it can be tricked by setting system clock to a future datetime :)

wewake··on Amazon EC2 Mac Instances
Boycott Apple completely. How did we go from open development to some overpriced, only half decent and walled mess that's now worth $2 trillion? Shame.
wewake··on Facebook Takes $5.7B Stake in India’s Jio
Exactly.

> JIO is deeply embedded into the rural populace. Exactly the ones who are vulnerable to disinformation campaigns.

This deeply concerns me as it will have unwanted consequences.

wewake··on Facebook Takes $5.7B Stake in India’s Jio
This is a proxy move by Facebook for all the same shady motives that led to Internet.org. GoI should look into this very carefully from a long term perspective of India's internet space. Zuck can't be allowed to take hold of Jio's scale in India.
wewake··on Why are we so bad at software engineering?
Food for thought: Should we establish a system that gives people license to code? Doctors need to get a license too because their practice involves human lives at stake.

I don't see how software doesn't put human lives at stake. Honestly, the number of lives at stake is increasing with each new self-driving car hitting the road.

wewake··on 64 Core Threadripper 3990X CPU Review
This article is more about Windows 10 limitations than 3990K. Good read though.
wewake··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
By vendors, you mean brands right?
wewake··on Ask HN: What change in your programming technique has been most transformative?
Wrong. Absolutely wrong analogy.

You can't discount people who keep code clean, modular and simple. It's not an easy thing to do unlike cleaning your house. It just takes one's will to clean the house but when it comes to keeping your codebase clean, it's much more than just will.

Sound knowledge of software architecture and design principles is required to write and keep your code clean and unfortunately, the number of people with this knowledge is very small in most teams and sometimes there's none.

Also, it's not okay to be messy unless you are working on a school/university project.

wewake··on iOS 13 app tracking alert has dramatically cut location data flow to ad industry
Apple already collects all the data of their users heavily and moves like these are simply meant to annoy their competitors (mostly Google) and keep the data to themselves while looking like a good kid in the valley.

The number of gullible people aka Apple fanboys is staggering here who actually think Apple is trying to _save_ their privacy from advertisers after reading this highly biased article. Hah.

wewake··on GitHub Archive Program
Software/code rots if not touched for months. This is such a fruitless effort but does get Github some good PR. They should instead preserve ideas that make all software happen.
wewake··on CO2 in the atmosphere just exceeded 415ppm for the first time in human history
I can assure you that you don't want to live in an atmosphere with 1000-2000 ppm CO2. Would you?
wewake··on How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy
Yes, attention is a commodity with great value when accumulated in large numbers. Exponential in a way, I would say.
wewake··on How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy
The global economy will collapse the day people get a hold on their senses to the fact that time spent on social media is time wasted poorly. Ofcourse, it is hypothetical... saw a video of a chimp using Instagram the other day on Twitter, so yeah global economy is not collapsing anytime soon.
wewake··on Netflix Flexes

Replacing Mark is not going to change anything. The problem is not Mark, the problem is what the company's built upon and its business model.
wewake··on Facebook accused of striking 'secret deals over user data'
From email dated 4 February 2015

Michael LeBeau – ‘He guys, as you know all the growth team is planning on shipping a permissions update on Android at the end of this month. They are going to include the ‘read call log’ permission, which will trigger the Android permissions dialog on update, requiring users to accept the update. They will then provide an in-app opt in NUX for a feature that lets you continuously upload your SMS and call log history to Facebook to be used for improving things like PYMK, coefficient calculation, feed ranking etc. This is a pretty highrisk thing to do from a PR perspective but it appears that the growth team will charge ahead and do it.’

Yul Kwon – ‘Based on their initial testing, it seems this would allow us to upgrade users without subjecting them to an Android permissions dialog at all.'

wewake··on Global warming of 1.5 °C: An IPCC special report
Also, according to the report, following present trends the 1.5°C cap could be reached as early as 2030. It has been estimated that CO2 emissions would have to drop by 45 percent from 2010 levels by 2030.

Needless to say, these difficult targets can't be met without cooperation between governments and technological innovations.

wewake··on Global warming of 1.5 °C: An IPCC special report
It's main highlight - global warming must be limited to 1.5°C rather than the previously agreed 2°C to avoid extreme heat, drought, floods and poverty around the world. This is especially alarming given that US (one of the major contributor to annual CO2 emissions) withdrew from Paris agreement in July 2017.
