westmeal··on Does this 8088 code in the Leisure Suit Larry 2 game do anything?
I have an old thinkpad x200 that I can hear operating over an AM radio close enough to the laptop but I have a feeling I'm hearing something else besides the CPU because the CPU would run too fast... right?

westmeal··on Show HN: OK-Robot: open, modular home robot framework for pick-and-drop anywhere
Is the title a reference to OK computer or is it just something you all came up with?

that was my first thought too, this kind of reminds me of the 'figure out which key was pressed by listening to keystrokes' trick.
westmeal··on I was infected with Zika to test a vaccine
But it was TOTALLY not the CIA. There is NO WAY the CIA could've done that.

westmeal··on “I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid that computation is too carbon intensive”
More like the rich won't do anything about climate change because they can do whatever they want and the poor will be made to do pointless things that don't really impact anything. As long as it seems like 'something is being done' it'll 'feel' like something is being done. If we really gave a shit, cargo ships with massive house sized oil burning engines would be first to go and we would move to nuclear power. We would also start producing products locally instead of shipping them halfway across the globe because people have less labor laws across the pond. Instead the government and corporations make it the middle class' problem and the best part is environmentalists actually buy this horseshit wholesale. It'd be funny if it didn't make me sad.

westmeal··on Brains are not required to think or solve problems – simple cells can do it
I used to think this but I don't know anymore. Without our bodies to provide stimuli what input is the brain going to use for thinking or reasoning? So much of what we do day to day is hard-linked to our body/sensorium. The brain without the spinal cord/nervous system is useless.
westmeal··on We may not lose our jobs to robots so quickly, MIT study finds
Yeah I agree, it's like saying "oh hey don't worry only a quarter of you guys will lose your jobs... but hey! Not gonna happen tomorrow!". Seems to completely ignore the impact that will have on people reliant on this income.

westmeal··on AMD's Next GPU Is a 3D-Integrated Superchip
I support this product that uses off the shelf nvidia GPUs to do <thing> on the computer they use for <big machine>. I see a lot of IT deps and MSPs asking if they can use AMD gpus because apparently a lot of dells come with em or something. I always have to tell them no and to just buy a P1000 or one of the other cheapo quadros instead and I hate it.

westmeal··on Don't knock the economic value of majoring in the liberal arts
Unfortunately people need money to survive so of course there will be focus on careers which earn them money. There are also numerous free resources and even college courses online for free if you'd like to know more about a given topic.

Arts and crafts don't really pay the bills either. There are of course creators who sell their artwork or crafts on marketplaces like Etsy but that's not really the same thing as a day job where you make 50k a year. I understand where you're going with this but reality is a bitch and people are forced to adapt.

westmeal··on Don't knock the economic value of majoring in the liberal arts
In this case it's because you spend a bunch of money you need to pay back and that burden is legitimately useless when you can use the internet to educate yourself for as little as 20 dollars a month. Also our entire economic system is based off of profit motives so it follows people would find that important in their lives.
