wes-k··on Learning to code is still worthwhile
There’s a huge difference between does it work vs is it elegant.

As a software engineer I have been strict on making sure my code is elegant.

Vibe coding has switched me to product (and project) manager. Why would I care about what the code looks like? Does it work!? Does it do what I want? Does the app have the right UI and UX? These are my concerns now. I rarely look at the output code.

wes-k··on 1D Chess
I love this! Such a simple game with a fun level of skill. High score 17485 feels pretty good (edit: Oh! Low power mode on the computer makes the game run slow, thus much easier to get crazy high scores).

Reminds me of SFCave and Nanana Crash for the simplicity and surprising replay ability.

(Failing to find an online version of SFCave a.t.m :'()

wes-k··on How to effectively write quality code with AI
> software specs are often an order of magnitude simpler than the actual number of branches in the code

Love this! Be it design specs or a mock from the designer. So many unaccounted for decisions. Good devs will solve many on their own, uplevel when needed, and provide options.

And absolutely it means more design up front. And without human in the direct loop, maybe people won’t skimp on this!

wes-k··on Apps SDK
If I had a human assistant, I'd ask them to book my flight. The chat box is your window to your AI assistant. Maybe this new assistant hasn't earned your trust yet, but it makes sense that trust-aside, you'd ask your assistant to do whatever they could do for you.
wes-k··on That viral video of a 'deactivated' Tesla Cybertruck is a fake
The fact that this deactivation feels possible is still a telling sign of where we’ve been heading. Update fail. Subscription lapsed payment. All sorts of new failure modes.
wes-k··on GPT-5
Only off by one character, how hard could that be?
wes-k··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
Same!
wes-k··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
Just installed Nuenki, really excited to give this a try. Amazing how it can hopefully iteratively help me learn Spanish while I don't change my behavior much.
wes-k··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
Been doing this the last 10 months. Lots of growth and self-discovery. Best wishes on your journey!
wes-k··on 4o Image Generation
My images say "Created with DALLE" below them, and a little info icon tells me they are rolling out the new one soon.
wes-k··on 4o Image Generation
The examples they show have little captions that say "best of #", like "best of 8" or "best of 4". Hopefully that truly represents the odds of generating the level of quality shown.
wes-k··on Ask for no, don't ask for yes (2022)
I like the framing of "defaults" too. Gives space for suggestion and change.
wes-k··on Ask for no, don't ask for yes (2022)
Our team currently relies on thingamajig's responsiveness and cannot tolerate a change in performance. We will setup a temporary replica of thingamajig. Can you please hold off until our thingamajig replica is stable. My team expects this to be done by March 8th.

If I don't hear back from you by lunchtime, I WILL eat your leftovers.

wes-k··on Ask HN: Is anyone still using Dreamweaver?
DHTML! Gosh just hearing that term takes me back. I think AJAX killed DHTML. I'm not sure what killed AJAX. Async/await? React?
wes-k··on Always go to the funeral (2005)
I literally just copied and pasted that exact part into my notes. Something about "versus doing nothing" really hits hard. I can do more than nothing! And also, sometimes, I need grace and time.
wes-k··on Starcraft (A History in Two Acts)
I couldn't get into it. I wasn’t sure if it was the game itself, my movement away from being a gamer, or just missing the game I knew so well.
wes-k··on Starcraft (A History in Two Acts)
My amateur impression was the following rankings:

Easy to hardest to play: Protoss, Zerg, Terran

Best when mastered: Terran, Zerg, Protoss

I wasn’t tapped into the pro/competitive side so I’m sure it played out differently for them.

wes-k··on Starcraft (A History in Two Acts)
BGH and UMS are where I spent my entire StarCraft life. Lot of wonderful hours into those!
wes-k··on Starcraft (A History in Two Acts)
SCUMS! (StarCraft Use Map Settings). These maps provided a wide array of games and I believe popularized or gave birth to a few. I remember tower defense, level up games where you and the other players explore the map and gain upgrades, a predator game where one player is chosen randomly to be the killer in a horror style hunt. Imagine, each map, possibly an entire new game, sometimes being discovered for the first time together with strangers. Such a fun and amazing time!
wes-k··on Napster sparked a file-sharing revolution 25 years ago
Just heard this song for the first time like a month ago, thanks for the reminder!
wes-k··on Mindfulness interventions for teens decrease mindfulness, study finds
This has been documented already. As you begin mindfulness practices you become aware of your thoughts. You then think “gosh, I didn’t have all these thoughts before” when really you did, you just weren’t aware of them.

I believe studies on this are discussed in Sam Harris’s book “Waking Up”.

wes-k··on Study: 61 UK firms tried a 4-day workweek and after a year, they still love it
3 day work weeks are best.

Most well paid developers would gladly take a 20% reduction in income for 50% more weekend right? So 4 days it is!

Well why stop there? I’ll take another 25% reduction for 33% more weekend. So 3 days it is!

But only the rich or a fool would then take an additional 33% reduction for a measly 25% bump to your weekend.

3 day work weeks are best. QED

wes-k··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
Oh we care plenty! Some AI round corners: hands in images, hallucinations in GPTs
wes-k··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
They already run compute for siri for voice to text. So they could in theory still provide an LLM backed siri service for free for their customers/users.
wes-k··on Purple Llama: Towards open trust and safety in generative AI
Sounds like the classic commoditize your compliment. Meta benefits from AI capabilities but doesn’t need to hold a monopoly on the tech. They just benefit from advances so they can work with open source community to achieve this.

wes-k··on Ship Shape
Smoothing is a different operation where you are simplifying the bezier curve by removing redundant(ish) points. So if you draw an almost straight line, you may have created 100 control points, and then the software simplifies it down to 4 points.
wes-k··on Interesting Bugs Caught by ESLint's no-constant-binary-expression (2022)
Your code executes and is not useless.

> The rule checks for comparisons (==, !==, etc) where the outcome cannot vary at runtime, and logical expressions (&&, ??, ||) which will either always or never short-circuit.

If you write if(baz == 6) then the if clause is useless and probably a bug.
