if it works and it's stupid... it's not stupid. If companies around the world can get stuff done with "anti-patterns" then, by definition, they don't "suck".
I'm all for doing better and trying to improve my "craft" but I'm not going to look down on decisions that work.
Just like you don't grant copyright on a PDF to Adobe Photoshop... you grant it to the human who guided the program. Photoshop is a tool and the human is the creator.
https://www.theregister.com/2023/03/16/ai_art_copyright_usco...
> "For example, when an AI technology receives solely a prompt from a human and produces complex written, visual, or musical works in response, the 'traditional elements of authorship' are determined and executed by the technology – not the human user.
> "Instead, these prompts function more like instructions to a commissioned artist – they identify what the prompter wishes to have depicted, but the machine determines how those instructions are implemented in its output."
> "The USCO will consider content created using AI if a human author has crafted something beyond the machine's direct output. A digital artwork that was formed from a prompt, and then edited further using Photoshop, for example, is more likely to be accepted by the office. The initial image created using AI would not be copyrightable, but the final product produced by the artist might be."
https://builtin.com/artificial-intelligence/ai-copyright
"Can AI Art Be Copyrighted? It has long been the posture of the U.S. Copyright Office that there is no copyright protection for works created by non-humans, including machines. Therefore, the product of a generative AI model cannot be copyrighted."
I personally run a fairly modified version HTPC on a QNAP (was synology but upgraded earlier this year - better base board + dedicated graphics card)
This... what's it matter if its hard to get running in linux? you only have to get it running once and bam - you run your server in a container of that.
Could take a rocket scientist working on it... but once it's done? it's done. the container maintainer occasionally releases updated versions doing the same thing that worked previously.
I have Plex running on docker on a QNAP with a dedicated graphics card and rarely have issues (other than my own stupidity).
"support" more support of an insecure, antiquated and unsafe browser is still support of a bad browser.
"same % as google" google does it because Apple did it and didn't get blocked. AKA: price fixing and market collusion. both should be blocked from it.
"it would have no effect" you are saying that alternatives wouldn't affect the price? You're full of...
competition would absolutely affect prices and alternatives would absolutely give real competition.
just because Apple supports the 5s with a shitty and limited browser that's faster but still hamstrung (your attempted points about Saint Apple and the Holy Safari) ... that doesn't change the fact that competition would lower prices as that 80% would absolutely be cut into by a massive number of companies that don't want to give the mafia a 30% cut.
Watch how those numbers change as Apple is FORCED to allow alternatives to their shitty options and their mafia tactics are countered.
https://mashable.com/article/apple-allow-third-party-app-sto...
"Apple will allow third-party app stores, because the EU is playing hardball Is this the end of the 30-percent App Store commission?"
"are you complaining" are you defending mafia tactics to take a house cut that's way beyond reasonable? doesn't matter if it's "poor little candy crush" or not... I'm arguing against unreasonable market force - just like I'll argue against MS's IE/Edge bundling and Google forcing their platform.
Your deflections just show that you know I'm making a point - androids "piss poor hardware" has nothing to do with Apple using mafia tactics to gouge their customers.
Web Apps and Electron shouldn't be needed - companies should be able to use alternative payment methods. They also shouldn't be tied to shitty webkit with it's outdated, insecure and lackluster implementation.
and "safari wins benchmarks" is a lie - unless you're talking about the furthest behind and most insecure.
https://www.wired.com/story/safari-flaws-webcam-online-accou...
https://www.computerworld.com/article/2531350/apple-s-safari...
But don't let facts get in the way of the stock in Apple you own...
it absolutely has to do with Safari as the alternative - webapps. aka installing apps on the iOS outside of the app store - is absolutely hamstrung by requiring a bloated and dated "webkit".
100% on point to Apple holding back alternatives to lock people into their store.
"why"
30% cut of millions that isn't needed for large developers. You know? that 80% that you say because games are locked into the app store and the 30% cut.
If companies can install stuff outside of the app store to save a 30% a LARGE number of companies would absolutely do so. To say hamstringing the browser on iOS isn't a calculated choice to say "but you can install webapps* (* with shitty safari)" and then completely cock block web browser choice isn't a 100% calculated choice to limit consumer choice is a disingenuous lie.
"80%"
You think that Apple isn't going to hold onto the 20% come hook or crook? in any means necessary - including locking you to the App Store and the 30% cut - despite the fact that alternative payment methods are completely reasonable? and how much of that 80% is through games on the app store that REQUIRES a cut through their ham fisted and unreasonable restrictions? That's even more reason to give consumers and companies options outside of the app store and the mafia requirement for a cut.
Chrome on iOS is a skinned Safari. It's not real Chrome. Same for Edge.
How is forcing a shitty and limited "rendering engine" not limiting choice?
At risk of regulators forcing the issue, rumor says it may be changing but you are being disengenous if you don't think this isn't the same level of BS as IE bundling with Windows. "But we can skin IE to look like chrome" isn't choice
https://9to5mac.com/2023/02/07/new-iphone-browsers/
> "For example, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that:
> Apple bans alternatives to its own browser engine on its mobile devices; a restriction that is unique to Apple. The CMA is concerned this severely limits the potential for rival browsers to differentiate themselves from Safari (for example, on features such as speed and functionality) and limits Apple’s incentives to invest in its browser engine.
> This restriction also seriously inhibits the capability of web apps – apps that run on a browser rather than having to be individually downloaded – depriving consumers and businesses of the full benefits of this innovative technology."
edit: and I've ignored Mac OS because the conversation is clearly about iOS. If Mac OS had the same restrictions as the iOS (IE: you can install apps outside of the app store on your laptop) then we'd have the same conversation there.
A company that makes a 30% cut on apps using customers as a pawn to make a worse browser experience pushing people into using app store apps?
Nothing is "less intrusive"... it's simply Apple making sure they get a larger cut of a larger market.
It's also why they enforce a shitty Safari unto their customers instead of allowing real browser choice. They are the new MS bundling shitty software to harm competitors and limit consumer choice.
You know of any revolutions that solve inequality? All the ones in known history simply change who the winners and losers are and maintain inequality.
Inequality absolutely exists and "revolutions" that claim to fix it in fact... don't. Socialism/Communism/etc all fail spectacularly to solve the "issue" of inequality.
reading comprehension is important if you're going to try to dunk... because an IQ above single digits would show you that the unaffordable care act was directly referenced by me.
To be clear: the unACA helped a handful of people and made it more expensive for everyone else with lies (keep your doctor) and lies (keep your plan) and more lies (save $2500).
I have extreme distain for the unACA because it's government solutions to government that is built on lies and doesn't solve the problems - instead it's goal is to exacerbate the problem so the "public option" becomes "desirable" by those who think big government solves problems (if you need time to go look up works like exacerbate? I'll be here when you get back)
Oil producers and cartels raise prices because... money's being printed. Because Biden shuts down new pipelines, slows oil leases, is hostile to energy production. Demand craters because of lockdowns that don't work... then ramps up because the world tries to return to normal after a "pandemic".
Almost like an increasing demand with a dipshit anti-energy President is going to have disastrously bad results.
Seriously though... the problem isn't "evil companies" doing shit like making money (how dare they!). The problem is multifaceted.
Did you have an issue when companies closed at record levels because of bad decisions that caused the slowdowns? Or were you cheering because those companies got what was coming? do you think that the surviving companies don't deserve profits after years of losses?
Sonarr? TV shows. Radarr? Movies. Books. Music. Etc.
"missing something obvious" the UX might be horrible... but once you set it up? you don't have to look at it.
"And I see people host yet another tiles UI (Plex/Jellyfin)" if all you think Plex is a "tiles UI" then there's no wonder you don't understand it... I have hundreds of movies, dozens of shows, audio books, music, etc in Plex and all the metadata gets automatically added and I can automatically play anything on my phone, tv, etc.
Oh... my friends/family has access to my Plex library as well so they can request and watch when they want.
Plex does transcoding and all that fun stuff.
You're missing all the details that go miles beyond a "tiles UI".
It would change the lives of everyone by making things worse.
Thanks for the offer but how about instead of making the problem worse for everyone in your attempt to help those poor poor teachers... maybe we look at stuff like less "help" from the government that's making everything more expensive and worse at every level?
Worst words you'll hear: I'm from the government and I'm here to help.
Computers? 100 years old.
What part of any "modern" industry isn't still very very young? even industries like construction that have been around for thousands of years are still relatively young.
Computers and computing? infinitesimal.
But realistically, it's definitely better for the "masses" to have stuff that just takes care of itself. Grandma don't know how to update router firmware and people like that are why stuff like Apple's "appliance" model is better than Androids more hands on approach.
You're looking at your phone on a day to day basis. Using your desktop. The router/switch/lightbulb/etc? All stuff that sits in the background and gets forgotten. Those things should do self maintenance - especially with zero days and issues that require updates to not be pwned the instant you connect to the www.
Even dead languages like COBOL aren't dead.
These techs are the tech that'll be here in 40+ years - or atleast until Skynet rewrites them in binary and we're nuclear ash. I think COBOL will be driving the satellites that monitor the heat death of the universe.
They will do everything in their power to kill and eat you and give you diseases.
We do need them but harmless? Mother Nature is anything but harmless.
https://hechingerreport.org/proof-points-why-elite-colleges-...
"To find out why elite colleges love legacies, two business school professors were granted access to 16 years of admissions data at one elite Northeastern college. The upshot: it’s in this school’s clear self-interest to take them. Alumni children who received offers matriculated at much higher rates, giving the school more certainty in their future enrollment numbers. And these loyal families with multi-generational ties to the college were far more likely to donate funds, money that the school needs, in part, to offer scholarships to others."
Colleges want to look good... but no chance in hell they'll give up consistent students of families who donate.
Cost effective? not when it'll cost them millions or billions in kick backs.

Everyone is receiving racism but it's the truly privileged that can do so and claim they aren't guilty of it themselves.
