weq··on How I Arrived at Sun as Employee #8
ha you sound as jaded as i do. ive come to learn that we will work with google (search) programmers as long as buisnesses fool themselves that outsourcing saves money.
weq··on Google's most ridiculous trick to force users into adding phone number
Whats painfully obvious is how people and profit and interchanged so seemlessly by the vultures who pray on the "ordinary people" and how desensitised we have become as a collective to the notion.

What HN shows is that a non-trivial amount of peoples entire life is focused on exploiting others inadequacies and this exploitation is portrayed as "normal" by those who profit and abormal by those who now see how invasive ad companies become.

Letting your child sit through an ad is akin to child abuse in my head. Like taking them to a church.

weq··on Why I quit Google (the second time)
TDLR; You need more then money and status to feel forfilled inside. Whats your price? Whats your goal?
weq··on Listerine Mouthwash Royalties
The worst thing about earning money is the stage where no you longer spend based on reason, but instead based on capital potential. The housing bubble has been building and building and building flames fumed by apparent risk-free-Xing your net worth.

Its a house of cards. When you have 20 properties, you are 20x'ing your risk of getting the lemon. My uncle started down this path 30 years ago and eventually got royally screwed. Its a chain, this choice of investment chains you to a wage.

weq··on Ask HN: Anyone else is tired of all the corporate bs?
Down the stack + down the corperate ladder. The higher you are, sure you get more money, but you get MUCH the less time MUCH more pressure.

If your talented in your field, u dont need a ladder to up your earning potential.

I have so many hobbies, programming is definately one of my longest but as a creative person its not my only one. If you are a career person, be that person. If you arnt, dont pretend. I never felt like a career was for me, my parents being immegrants who spent everyday of the lives working in search of enough money -- which never came!

Everyday for me is a mix of Gardening, nature, building 4wds, eletrical devices, welding, really anything i wish. Plus my job which i get payed for. I do what i want, everyday. I never get up unless i want to (i can set my own hours and no one questions it) All my shirts/ties/suites are in the bin, replaced with crocs, tank tops, and tracksuites.

You are free to move jobs and find a company that values you, not just what money you can make for them. Ive been RemoteOnly for 5yrs, i escaped to a company who is still corperate but pays less and gives you back more. i can easily alt-tab during meetings and i know alot of others do to. Ive got a fishing line off my back deck, i live in a rural/coastal area. i literly never ever have to make small chat. I dont goto really any company functions except christmas parties. i have great, real, honest conversations with all my collegauges, espeically about work-life balance. My previous jobs where in DoD/LawTech; DoD was the was easy, plentyiful money, with the tradeoff being a bureaucratic nightmare and the ownership of your soul.
weq··on Big cuts coming for CNN+ after slow start
I stopped watching the news PRE-covid! Actually, TV, i turned it all off... because? the power the media has in influencing dumb people. I got sick of it after the last eelection. Turning off is the only way.

Never felt happier. I recommend it to everyone. I crowd source my news from friends.

Capitalism DOESNT fail! This IS the system. In the presence no rules, people will converge on the lowest common denonomiter. The problem with Estsy happens to any platform that gets popular. Its been happening in the real world since the 1990s where large coperations have moved in on mom and pops. Curated gets undercut.

There is no way around this in the free market. Ad comnpanies are the largest companies in the world, THATS NOT A CONINCIDENCE. Its about making people consume. Making people want sh*t that in reality they could live without. Overloaded by stimulii, people break. People want the dream. They hear about the dream. People want the cheapest thing so they can 100x instead of 2x. People who knock things off want the most popular thing. This is competition working. Its a race to the bottom or we sacrifice infinite growth. There is no other way. You either create new markets, create new consumers, or steal other peoples cut of the pie. "Disruption".

weq··on A Russian debt default looks almost inevitable
I hear the only thing that makes the US a super-power is that commodities are priced in USD. If the main supplier starts selling in some other currency, then you no long have a super-power.

Im sure im not the only one who has seen this talk playing out of the years with oil being the main focus of attention. Intersting how this move plays to that rhetoric.

weq··on Walmart truckers to start at $95k a year
You dont know how many doctors feel trapped by their profession. My ex didnt get mental help because it would stop her getting residencies.

Doctors, like DoD/contractors, Bankers, anything hi paying really; give their lives to their job. That includes limiting what they do at home, where they travel, who they speak too, how they act "out of the office".

Getting a career or sticking to a career are not indicative of happiness, security, or comfort.

weq··on Walmart truckers to start at $95k a year
Tow truck drivers are making a killing on youtube right now. Humans cant drive cars/trucks/properly; robots have no chance. Not with the current tech promoted as "AI".
weq··on Arrests of a Yakuza Leader and Affiliates for Narcotics and Weapons Trafficking
Unlike the rhetoric of "Just Say No", this is what black markets are. They are not run by idiots, but generally desperate people with no other means. Once you are over the line in that world, the good doesnt matter. You are working underground, anything goes. Desperate people get taken advantage of, but the yakuza are just one link. This route is usually controlled by the triads, they have been arming conflict in the golden triangle for years. Like any other capitalists, blackmarket syndicates expand and fight for terroritory.

weq··on It's Time to Start Studying the Downside of Psychedelics
Hold up - prohibition WAS the experiment, not the other way around! This article misses the historical use of these substances since humanity began. We know the effects, because they created the modern human. Many other organisms use substances to alter perspections, not just humans of low socio-econimic backgrounds who ran with the wrong crowds at school.

Nora Volkow's is THE agent of DECEPTION who has had the most influence of US Drug Policy in the last 30 years. Her remit is to oppose any loosing of Prohibition and to use any means necessary to tie drug use societies problems. She is the face of the "cherry picked science" used to support these status quo, spending her career blocking access by other scientists to research so she can publish negative research unopposed. She moulds her research outcomes to pre-defined talking points espoused by her sponsors (politicans, BigPharma). Not a single longatudal study she has released about a substance would meet a clinical trails bar. Apparently drug research of a science free zone with such conclusions that "cannabis causes schizophrenia" even when the partipants in the study where using nicotine + cannabis; when controlled for cannabis use only the results failed to prove any association, when controlled for nicotine the association is clear (albielt, correlation doesnt equal causation)

https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/bjpsych-advances/art...

The laws prohibiting these substances in various treaties have ruined countless more lives then they ever saved. In the context of history, we will look back on Prohibition like we did do the nazi's - Racist Genocide that went against all scientitic recommendations at the time, spawning countless leeches like Nora who made careers "saving the children". Nora is the reason why the DEA still classifies these substances. She is a real piece of work; her studies protected BigPharma, BigBuisness, and prolonged lies that all these substances offered was a deep fryer for your brain.

https://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/19/health/conversation-with-...

https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/204690-nih-expert-warn...

With the re-emergence of these substances into mainstream science again, we will see exponential growth in their application across countless ailments back to pre-prohibition levels where most medicines where derrived from cannabis or other "drugs of abuse".

weq··on From Belonging to Burnout, Five Years at Airbnb
Talents been bought and sold to the highest bidder. its sickens me how dumb smart people can be because money. study hard, work on your talent all your life, so a large corperation can have you micro-optimise its addiction-tech to extract every last dollar for shareholders using VC captial to undercut your competitiors til they crumble and make it look like your talented engineers are doing something for society instead of just pumping and dumping.
weq··on Amazon worker chat app to ban words such as “union”, “pay raise”, “slave labor”
FAANG workers are SHEEP. I live on a lakefront at 35, havnt gone into an office in 5years, had FAANG recruiters at my door since i was 21 . They like to get you young because they can then set your expectations of what work culture is.

And while i am at it, LOL to the conferance culture, talk about collecting stars. Every framework needs a speaking circut so you can somehow bring the familiarty of university into your working life because you have never known anything more then this. Swallowed by the system, addicted to consuming, pushed forward by the prospect of making an impact, used and abused by capitalistic entity that courted you, young, impressionable, starry eyed.

weq··on USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021)
Im a non-FAANG developer so i cant comment on what all the sheep/ad devs are doing;

but I can comment on what a polygot cross-platform cross-cloud software engineer who supports a plethora of native portable devices integrations require, and thats USB hubs with ports coming out the ye-ha - otherwise im constantly playing musical chairs.

weq··on USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021)
thank you to the poster because i had this issue the other day with junk rebranded hubs that couldnt even power 3 devices at once on a 6 port hub! spent hours chasing my tail on things caused by the dodgy insides. my experience here is buy the best u can, or the cheapest u can (and a few of them atleast).
weq··on Due to failure in the IT system, it is not possible to run any trains today
I worked in defence on systems that did similiar and i remmember the one my company inherited and wow and wow it was the most complex, nested peice of SQL stored procs i have ever witnessed. It did the job, but it took HOURS to run. We had to re-write it completely to make any changes. But thats what happens when you let companies like Accenture at a system of yours! You pay them the big bux to be sueable, and they milk you like a cow.
weq··on The case against empathy (2019)
Id call that stigma constructed by Conservative Right Wing ideaology! They call them bludgers in my country and parade them around in everyones face and use it to justify tax cuts, subsidies, or grants, for their mates.

its the cicle of life really

weq··on I'm a scam prevention expert and I got scammed
I bought a book on Amazon in 2005, it came (weeks) late, i complained, got sent another, ended up receiving 2 books. It was my last purchase from Amazon. Since then, the only time i see Amazon is on the backend of a scammer. Amazon in my opinion, in every sense, a scam itself.

First off, its just morphed from a book store into a upper class ebay. Alibabba became the chinese ebay. I'll pay that drop shipper the money, i got no problem with the conveince they give but realistically whats the point of going through 3 middle men when i can wait an extra week and limit that to 0 or 1.

Towys in my country are usually connected to some kind of mafia. Never met an altruistic one like like matts offroad recovery in my travels.
weq··on Developers spend most of their time figuring the system out
Pair programming for me works best on complex issues I, or others, have already failed at. Usually its a short term endevour (minutes), ive only done (hours) of pairing in extreme circumstances either during PoCs or prod issues.

My opnion is that people need time and practice to aborb. Everyone has there own way. If you are pairing everyday for no other reason then company policy, it sounds like the worse place in the world to work.

weq··on Developers spend most of their time figuring the system out
Sounds like you are still searching for meaning in your life. follow your dreams, dont follow others.
weq··on Developers spend most of their time figuring the system out
In the zone, that slurp becomes worse then fingers across a chalkboard. Great way to put subtle bugs in your code.
weq··on Developers spend most of their time figuring the system out
That is literly a description of programming hell for me (20+yrs also here). My fingers are so much better at streaming my thoughts them my mouth which often struggles to keep up.
weq··on Developers spend most of their time figuring the system out
I love pair programming !!!for specific tasks!!! Just like TDD, i think its pragmatic and should be based on your needs. But all or nothing, naaa, thats just coolaid or micromanagement.
weq··on Ask HN: Tech Salaries and Wealth Inequality
Ive often attempted to convince said frontline workers who i am friends with/know to pursue IT jobs because (if u understand IT) they are low effort, high reward.
weq··on Crows possess higher intelligence, thought a primarily human attribute (2020)
thanks for sharing this. birds in general are some of the most amazing aniamls man can befriend. So much intelligence, its really next level.

That said, ants friggen farm. Size does not determin intelligence. Nore does brain size.
