wepple··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or does the job market for IT seem bad today?
Never works this way. Efficiency gains will result in the expectation of doing more.

Maybe that “more” will be in other areas of the business or economy and thus lead to less headcount, but given how profitable tech is.. I’d assume they’d be redeployed to build more product

wepple··on Japan enacts law to promote competition in smartphone app stores
Because Sony phones were clearly excellent which is why everyone bought them, and made them the success they are today?

What exactly do you want out of “lots of competition”?

wepple··on How Alexa dropped the ball on being the top conversational system
Whilst there may be some inefficient bureaucracy in large orgs, I’m tempted to offer the following proposition:

Companies that are absolutely at the forefront of AI, must be by definition, doing terrible things wrt privacy & security.

wepple··on AI is not a Net Positive for Society
For “net” positive you have to consider the broader downsides.

Energy consumption, for example. Or change in incentives for producing original writing. Etc etc.

I don’t think we fully comprehend the negatives yet (or, to be fair, the positives)

> Has been shocking to see YC double down on LLMs so much in the last two batches.

They also doubled down on blockchain sufficiently late in the game that it was obvious to most that there was zero value in all of it.

Either they’re really getting high on their own supply, or there’s some kind of model where you hedge against missing out on a unicorn, even if all indicators point to the fact it’s vaporware.

wepple··on Google releases smart watch for kids
> No, they weren't

Yea they were. The model T was plenty safe simply because it wasn’t fast enough to be a significant danger.

The point is, claiming that “we used to do X and it was fine” is a weak argument. Times change.

wepple··on Google releases smart watch for kids
> Generations of kids survived without their parents needing to know their location at all times.

And cars used to be safe even without seatbelts!

It turns out times change. Before you think I’m disagreeing with the entirety of your comment, my own kids are the most free-range in-the-dirt kids I know. But it’s location-dependent. I trust cities and their people far less than wild animals.

wepple··on Companies with return-to-office mandates face losing their most valuable workers
Exactly my point.

“that can be established without having a dedicated physical space for that”

… for you.

wepple··on Companies with return-to-office mandates face losing their most valuable workers
I disagree. Physical space and distance helps, a lot. I can’t explain why, but the commute home helps establish a different psychological setting.
wepple··on Researchers cracked an 11-year-old password to a $3M crypto wallet
Crypto doesn’t change the game. Products that generate passwords should do so securely.

You may be using it to protect extremely sensitive information that could have people killed - that’s more important than a few million dollars in imaginary money

wepple··on Ask HN: What makes Windows 11 perform much worse than Windows XP?
Plus backward compatibility. They add code but never take it away.
wepple··on We're ending our Samsung collaboration
Unfortunately, I highly doubt there will be any material PR backlash.

Ask 100 Samsung owners on the street how the ifixit repair ability relationship impacts them, and 99 will ask what ifixit is, and what repairability means. The other one is too stoned to answer.

wepple··on Drone Flying 101 – An interactive tutorial for beginners
DJI make the best easy to use quads that are basically GoPros that can be positioned anywhere in three dimension space at command. If you have a vlog about how you’re going off grid or hiking the Appalachian trail, that’s what you should use.

For true FPV, the DJI quads are way too limited in many ways and are not exceptional at anything - they’re a solid high-end Toyota Corolla.

The DJI video system is very good, and does make its way into a lot of custom FPV quads. But it’s very heavy and high latency (also, just as bad: variable latency), so never used for racing. And it’s also too heavy for smaller aircraft. It’s also more expensive than all alternatives, once you get past about 3 builds.

wepple··on Drone Flying 101 – An interactive tutorial for beginners
Yeah, DJI clearly owns the video space for FPV, with the exception of racing and a lot of freestyle where latency is king, so HDZero or analog rules.
wepple··on Drone Flying 101 – An interactive tutorial for beginners
Depends what type of video, doesn’t it? I’m surely biased but whenever I see people working on high-end film sets they’re using serious cinelifters, and even for property filming you typically see cinewhoops, and for action sport (motocross, drifting, etc) you’ll never see a DJI
wepple··on Drone Flying 101 – An interactive tutorial for beginners
Once you step outside of DJI there’s so much variety, what do you want to do?

If you’re learning to fly FPV, get a betafpv all inclusive kit like the cetus series - that’s what I started on.

Eventually though, if you’re flying hard you’ll crash hard so you want to know how to build and therefore fix your quads. I highly highly recommend Joshua Bardwells DIY build kit and YT video series.

But you can also buy bind-n-fly quads like the Nazgul.

+1 on the boxer. Great for everything at a pretty damn good price point.
wepple··on Drone Flying 101 – An interactive tutorial for beginners
I’d avoid the DJI controller if you want to truly get into FPV. Eventually you’ll want to fly non-DJI quads (eg the o3 air units are too heavy for whoops, so you’ll be analog or HDZero) so stick with ELRS.

The arguably best all rounder controller at a decent price point is the radiomaster boxer at about $99. Their pocket model is only $55 and super compact, but isn’t really full sized.

wepple··on Ask HN: How do you go about finding friends and enemies?
Do you live in a city? In rural areas, having strong bonds is much, much more common.

Also, not everyone is doing the apps and millions of options thing. You may be looking in the wrong places.

wepple··on Ask HN: How do you go about finding friends and enemies?
Have you considered talking to a therapist? It sounds like the problem here is you.

It’s not desirable to have enemies, why would you wish that? If you’re doing something that some portion of the population disapprove of, that’s one thing. But to be upset that you don’t have enemies really stupid.

If you don’t have any close friends who energize you and you feel close to, maybe try being more exciting yourself? People are probably bored shitless if you.

There, I insulted you. We’re enemies now, stay up all night thinking of witty rebuttals and have strong rivalries!

Also, more sinister, they can actually take functionality away and increase pricing over time.

+1 major win for security updates.

Heat signature. RF when it does transmit.

If it’s hidden in a metal frame then it’s not going to get a good GNSS fix. And if you’re doing a deep sleep you’re powering down your GNSS module so not getting a proper warm fix.

wepple··on Ford trims EV battery orders as losses swell to over $100k per electric car
You’ve made so many bad assumptions I don’t know where to start.

What if you need seats for 5? What if you care about the environment but also want to have fun? What if it’s about the acceleration of an EV that is enticing?

wepple··on Ford trims EV battery orders as losses swell to over $100k per electric car
That probably includes one-off development and manufacturing costs

This is the obvious solution. EVs are so far from being ready for primetime

- 4x the cost plus ongoing fees

- 2x larger

- can’t buy it at any big box store

- relies on a third party who can also see what you’re tracking

- battery limited to weeks, not years

Accessibility and features make these way more compelling
